You Be the Indians GM - 2020 Edition

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Makes sense if they’re going to work Reyes into the OF occasionally

Exactly where I'm at.

Seems like they are determined to let Zimmer make up ABs in Columbus and earn a spot, but that move (if it comes) will force them to make a decision on who to put at DH.

SS - Lindor (S)
CF - Mercado
3B - Ramirez (S)
1B - Santana (S)
DH/LF - Dickerson (L)
DH/RF - Reyes
DH/LF - Bauers (L)
C - Perez
2B - TBD

It's shame he hasn't been able to stay healthy the last 4 years. He really did turn into a damn good hitter.

For sure. Honestly wouldn't hate if they kicked the tires on a cheap 1 year deal. I imagine the Indians are content with their current OF corp though, or at least would prefer to pursue one that has a better track record for staying healthy.

From what I can see is Francona essentially saying we want Reyes to be able to play out there without any hesitation from a coaching staff and player standpoint. We shall see in the off season what he can really do in the OF, but until then we should project 600-700ish innings in the OF at the current moment.

I don't see any reason to estimate his innings in the outfield based off an off the cuff remark from Tito prior to any off-season moves being made. All I'm confident of is that he will be out there somewhere between very little to all the time.

I'm on board with all of this with the exception of Bauers over Daniel Johnson in LF.
I know DJ hasn't played in the MLB yet, but his skillset and work ethic profile better than Bauers, IMO.

What exactly are we basing this work ethic comment on?

Also, important to note that Bauers's last AAA season in Tampa he posted numbers equal to what Johnson did last year in Columbus.

"The Indians need to figure out a way to get Bauers committed to everyday routines. On days after he would collect a few hits, by his own admission he would skip hitting in the cage. On days he went 0-for-4 he was less than receptive to hearing from coaches. "

Seriously, thanks for providing that info. I still don't think that means he's lacking in work ethic, but it is interesting to hear nonetheless. I also know very little about Daniel Johnson's work ethic.

I just know they both had a good level of minor league success, and are almost identical ages. Will be interesting to see how this offseason shakes out for the both of them.

Granted, it's just a four minute interview, but I came away very impressed with DJ after watching this clip.

I just have a hunch they are expecting him a lot more in the OF than any of us would like or think. I will wait til the off season though to figure if he can actually do it or not, but for now I am expecting a lot of innings during spring training.

Bauers got to the bigs at 22 and was a top 100 prospect, you don't get that way being completely lazy at the end of the day. My hunch Its the philosophy when he came to Cleveland is different than he agrees with and they FO and coaching staff hopes he can come on board with it. I am wondering if its the opposite way with Johnson since he seems to have started playing better in Cleveland. We don't see a lot of behind the scenes so its hard to say.

Don't know if this was explicitly mentioned in here. If it was, I missed it

Center fielder Bradley Zimmer doesn’t want to play winter ball, and the Indians do not seem happy about that decision.

It has been a tough couple years for the player who was once the Indians' top prospect chosen with the 21st pick in the first round of the 2014 draft. He hit .285 in the first half of 2017, but only .196 in the second half of his rookie season.

Zimmer started the 2018 season with the Indians. He was sent to Columbus the first week in June after hitting just .226 with 44 strikeouts in 104 at-bats. He injured his shoulder and missed the rest of 2018 and all but nine games in 2019 after rosters were expanded on Sept. 1.

“We talked to him the other day and he was adamant that he needs to go home and have a normal off-season of work, not to get away from work, but to not play baseball,” Francona said. “We expressed to him that he’s missed basically a year and a half of at-bats and that at some point we may be asking him to go get more. We just wanted to be on the same page.

“Does it mean he can’t make the team? No. But it could happen that way (Zimmer starting 2020 in Columbus) and we just wanted to be up front with him about that.”

I understand where both sides are coming from.

Zimmer has had very few, if any, regular/healthy offseasons. Even when he was in the minors, there was always something. That's true for a lot of guys though. I don't have a problem with him making sure he's entering next season healthy.

Regardless, if he comes to camp looking like he can help us win, he should be on the team.

Exactly where I'm at

I understand him being through rehab hell getting back to where he is now and needing a proper offseason to refresh.

Also frustrating that he isn't going that extra mile this winter when he has been underwhelming offensively when he has been healthy.

Injuries can be very wearing mentally. He needs the at bats, but I'm going to assume that he knows his own body and mind better than we do.
