That shot is so silky smooth and so are his handles. I’m glad we got a coach like Bee to develop this kid along with the rest of the team.

Honestly, we still don't know if Beilein is good or not. Let's wait and see before we make declarations of how good he is as far as coaching and development go.

I do see good signs, but i'm going to have to see what he wants to accomplish with each and everyone individually. Passing and sharing the ball is good as far as building a balanced offense, but if it comes at the expense of individual progression of our most prized players( i.e having the ball in our PGs hands more and developing their iso skills/passing as ball dominant as opposed to giving TT/Nance, etc the ball more) then it's sort of an issue.

What I like about Beilein is his ability to teach and that works well with players who want to be coached. Being a Buckeye alum I was always impressed at how well coached they were without top line talent.

i guess I’m old school but I enjoy coaches that get the best out of their players and players who allow themselves to be coached.

Sure, I agree with this.

Just needs to be teaching the right things.

Hypothetical question: You have to pick now, you have the option to choose either Morant or Garland, who do you pick?

I think it is pretty tough. I like a pg who passes guys open, but I also know that can be shut down pretty easily. Garland's range gives him more potential to me. I also don't know enough about Garland as a passer yet. He looks pretty good. If Morant averages 7 assists, but Garland gets 5 and has all-time shooting potential, I take Garland.

I think Garland is the better fit on the Cavs right now, but it's not a roster set in stone, so that doesn't mean much.

he just looks like a modern star pg even though he didnt do a heap today

Before the draft I still would have gone Garland, give me Steph over Russ

Ja Morant is a better passer than Russ and honestly just not quite as athletic. He is like Rondo with a better shot, more hops, better burst and worse D lol.

i think in the playoffs shooters just perform better. Especially in the PG spot. If Ja had better defense then i owuld change some things.

Garland needs to have the ball in his hands and put up tons of shots. Why does Coby White take 22 shots and Garland does not have any Green light when the Bulls are way further in the rebuild? There has to be a priority and pecking order for a rebuilding team, and shot attempts and usage should not be divided equally. I don't like it from what I have seen. I hope Beilein adjusts his philosophy from college.

Garland had +13 last night and he is not being put in a position to affect the game like he can, even this early it's apparent what he can and can not do. He needs to run the PnR or come off screens on the move as the ball handler.

Makes no sense to start Delly. I don't care that he is trying things. You need to try things, but the right things. We know what we have in TT and Nance. Try your camp guys. He barely gave them any minutes. Get your new drafties feet wet and play them more and tell them to put shots up. Delly should be the mentor and mostly a catch and shoot guy at this point in the rebuild. He hsould not control the ball so much.

fucking love my new avatar. Fucking sexy.

I agree with basically everything you said including sexy avatar, Garland isnt getting the shots because Clarkson/TT/Nance are pricks that feel rookies need to wait their turn no matter how much better they are at basketball

While I agree that comparing Darius to Jrue is... let's say questionable for the time being, I do think the notion that no elite PG's play defense is slightly misguided. Curry is a competent and effective defender who works with what he's got and while he has benefitted from playing next to guys like Iggy, Draymond, Klay and KD, he still provides enough on that end to never become an outright liability. Dame, even though he is hardly an all-nba defender, is still smart and understands the do's and don'ts on that end as well. Again, he will not lock down an opposing juggernaut, but he's smart and diligent enough that he can make up for his lack of innate defensive ability.

More importantly though, consider the group we're discussing here: Curry, Harden, Dame, Kyrie.... Like, these guys are walking nuclear reactors on offense. An even bigger reason why their defensive shortcomings aren't necessarily too big of a deal is that they can compensate for it with being absolute death machines on offense. We're talking historically rarified air in terms of offensive ability here. Simply expecting Darius' defensive issues to be offset just by virtue of his projected brilliance on offense is asking a whooooooooole lot of him. I think it's absolutely fair to question his defensive ability as it pertains to him being a truly elite player in this league.

From what I've seen of the exhibition and preseason games, Garland has come off the bench which likely means he has shared the floor with Clarkson. This will depress anybody's shot numbers.

I also think it is way too soon to be worrying about this. Garland wasn't even healthy enough to participate in a full practice until I think the day before the Argentina exhibition game. Last night he rolled his ankle early on in the Pistons game which probably contributed to only playing 11 minutes.

Ozone makes no sense. The defensive PGs in the NBA don't make the impact and win championships. The shooters and the defensively inept do.

Kyle Lowry begs to disagree.

...defense is cool and fun, but it doesn't matter anymore as teams will shoot open 3's on almost every possession regardless of who your pg defender is.

That is very true in the regular season, but very untrue the further you get in the playoffs. Open threes get much harder to find as the defensive intensity ramps up. Just ask Portland.

The most important trait for a PG nowadays is the ability to shoot off the dribble on better than league average, and if you can also pass and get inside the lane it's game over.

Not if the other team has someone who can do the same, and your guy can't slow him down at all. And the kind of high-offense PG's you're describing are becoming more common around the league.

I'm not saying that a defense-first PG is a great idea. But you seem to be dismissing the idea that defense is still a very important component of a true contending team, and poor defense at the point puts your overall defense behind the 8 ball on every possession.
