What would you do with Sexton? (role on the team, trade ,etc) having him come off the bench you think is going to raise or lower his value?
I think the best hope is that he continues his shooting efficiency from last year and demonstrates that he is at least a "below average" defender at the 2. In that case, you start him with Garland and see what happens.

I think the most likely world is becomes off the bench, is a spark plug, and gets traded for a future unprotected first and a contract.

The worst world is his efficiency falls back down and the Cavs just have this young guard with potential and they have no idea how to get him minutes.

Going to have to watch Garland's efficiency at the rim as it looks like he will at least for now rely on his floaters when attacking in traffic which means his FTr will be down, and therefore his overall efficiency from the floor.

Either way, I don't want him to pursue contact at the rim anyways, not for the time being that is because of durability concerns. But in the long run, he will 'need' to either become a good finisher at the rim like Curry, not efficiency wise but scoring off of cuts and being creative at the rim, and not relying purely on floaters. (I wish he becomes like Curry at the rim, but that's probably asking for way too much), or he becomes a player with at least 6-7 FTAs a game.

Now, I highlighted 'need' because he won't really need to become any of those because I truly believe in his shot from 3, but if he wants to reach that next level as a scorer he will need to become one of those. I'd rather he learned out to finish a-la Curry and settled on 5 FTA a game.

I agree... I think Garland will have this season and next season before we need to see his game start completing itself. This year the goals should be: 1) Garland adjusting to NBA size; 2) Garland seeing the game slow down; and 3) Garland maintaining efficient scoring. If he does that, then I think next season the team needs to start working with Garland on drawing free throws and being passable on defense.

DOn't think the game is too fast for him. I don't get that notion at all..he seems in complete control. Sexton otoh...

I'd say:1) Adjusting to size 2)becoming confident from 3 as a volume shooter 3)letting the NBA know that he can not be left alone by shooting deep 3's and forcring teams to pick him up very close which will open up the game for him and everyone else 4)becoming a floor general while maintaining high volume of 3's.

He is everything I hoped Daniel Gibson would be and slightly less.

Yeah, don't get me wrong, he looks like he knows what he is doing... my only point is rookie PGs all generally have some trouble adjusting to the NBA speed, especially when it comes to thinking two or three passes in advance. Garland will be fine, but it definitely will be an issue, at least for the start of the season.

In general, though, I agree with your points. I think #4 is the real key. He needs to show that he at least has the potential to be a lead facilitator and a 38+% three-point shooter. That may take a ear or two, but it should be the team's goal to start developing that this year.

What would you do with Sexton? (role on the team, trade ,etc) having him come off the bench you think is going to increase or lower his value?

I think Sexton plays better with Love and TT. I also think the organization wants Garland to earn the starting spot. Not sure his couple games in preseason gets him that spot yet.

Garland just seems easier to put a unit around and he will still contribute at high level no matter who is around him. I think he can start the season from off the bench then when the coaching staff know who each plays best with they can adjust the lineup, rotation, and minutes to figure out how it's best to stagger Garland and Sexton's minutes to maximize their development.

Even when Garland starts, I think it doesn't mean Sexton has to go to the bench. I think they can figure out units each plays with more while staggering minutes but they need the chance to play together. One might run with more of the bench players but both might be starter and get starter minutes. There is just too many variables at the moment since the roster is like half young guys and half vets that will likely be shipped off the season with only a couple of vets having a chance to be here long term.

If the Cavs think Garland and Sexton can play together then the goal needs to be creating a lineup with two defensive wings and Kevin Love at center. Alternatively, they could play Love at the four if they found a center who is a rim protector, not killable in the pick-and-roll, and is a great rebounder.

The talent just is not there on this team... even if Henson can be that rim protector for the second lineup, I do not see a good enough defensive wing on the team.

Also, in either case, you basically are crossing Kevin Porter Jr. out of any future key role.

Finally, it is really hard to find good defensive wings that can shoot and rim protecting bigs that can rebound and defend the pick-and-roll. I just think these are problems facing any future version of Garland and Sexton being paired together. It is easier to team-build without that limitation.

This team was not built to win nor was it built to maximize the likelihood of Sexland succeeding. This has been evident in pre-season and why I think Garland and Sexton are competing for the starting PG spot, not with Delly and Knight.

Sexton needs a good screener to play with. He got to the basket at will with TT and Zizic last year. Martin can't set a screen. He looks lost without a screen. He is really good at accelerating around the screen. he needs to be able to shoot off the screen next

I do think Porter can be that defensive wing. He is long and I don't see any reason he can't play the 3. He has great wing span and big body even if he is "only" 6'6". I have been encouraged by his willingness on defense. His closeouts on 3's are good. He bodies his man. His problem right now is he has a tendency to use his hands to much and foul in general. I like his defensive potential.

I really think Garland needs a Center that fits him well to do whatever that he wants to do and limit what the opposing team can do defensively. I don't want them switching effectively because the Center is not a good post player, I don't want them to effectively trap Garland because the Center is a bad roller, I don't want him to be a bad screener, etc. We have to try to see how we can limit what the other team is doing, and in order to maximize the team's offense and Garland's the Center needs to be a priority because I view Garland's as most effective running the high PnR and basically all actions that involve the big.

I think the Cavs need a Center with presence who can really screen. Love does not provide that at the 5. What he does provide is pick and pop threat which will limit the trapping that Garland will eventually have to play through. But, I'm not sure that Love is an automatic shooter at this point from the top of the break, and i'm not sure that it's smart to jack up a 3 early in the shot clock if he is shooting below league average from that spot. Love is also not that kind of player.

That's why I think the priority should be getting a Center from the draft. I really hoped we could get Goga Bitadze. He would have fit in nicely imho. But we also should again draft BPA. It's just so tough finding that Center...and do we really have to suck until 2021 ? lol.

Collin Sexton didn’t even earn his spot, so Garland having to earn his spot would be ridiculous. He needs to start.

I’m hoping he can have that Trae Young/Doncic effect and shows he’ll be the player to build around.

I agree with most of what you are saying. I don't think any decisions need to be made on Sexton anytime soon. Let him and Garland grow, if they play well together then try to build around them going forward. If they create defensive issues or just don't mesh together then stagger them.

Sexton needs the opportunities to grow as a PG, it's only going to help him play better with Garland. So by playing them staggered from the beginning, maybe Beilein figures out a backup plan to play both of them effectively over 48 minutes if they don't play well together.

Trae had a really rough preseason...4/16 from deep in 3 games played, and a staggering 23 turnovers. Still probably a bottom-5 defender in the NBA. Premature, I think, to say he's shown you can build around him.

I think they wanted Sexton to earn that spot but when George Hill got injured and it clearly wasn't working with him playing with Clarkson in the second unit, they put him in the starting unit. I'm not sure it was suppose to be a full time promotion into the starting unit but I think he definitely earned the spot while George Hill was injured and there was no turning back.
