Looking for a new laptop

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
It says 4 gb of RAM in my system properties so it could upgrade. I might have an older one? I'm still on Windows 7. Something is weird with the batteries and charging so for the last year or so I don't even use a battery. I just plug it in the charger and it's the only way it turns on and stays on.

I think the hard drive says 300 gb capacity but it's been "full" for months. I've cleared everything off the computer and it always says it's full. I figured it must be something with internet memory because I only use the internet. But I've cleared cache and wiped history and it does nothing. I've researched it and haven't found an answer although I feel there must be one.

So yeah, it runs okay somehow but I can tell it runs slow and stutters when I try to watch streaming. And I have good internet. All of this just makes it a bit annoying to use. I could buy it again refurbished for like 100 but I figure I can get a laptop the runs way better for a bit more when 200-300 is still cheap. I'd possibly go 500+ if the value was there.

All my technology is behind. I could use a new tv too as mine is 10 years old. And I have a crappy phone too which is okay with me. Only problem is that I want to start listening to music and playing basketball, but I need to find a device that can download music (and wireless headphones to use). I see cheap options around that would be big upgrades since I'm so behind. But Black Friday/Cyber Monday is also coming up. So I'm up for recommendations.

I think your computer comes stock with 4gb of ram but if you wanted to upgrade it, 8gb of ram is the most it can take. A solid state drive will make things run quicker too.

If you aren't able to do that stuff yourself, it's probably just better to get a new laptop. I don't have any recommendations because intend to buy used or broken laptops and fix them when I need a new one.

Should I be focusing on a ssd then? Or higher processor? I think around 300 a lot of laptops basically upgrade me in every area.

I wouldn't buy a laptop without a SSD or at least a hybrid drive now. Also try to buy the best processor you can for the money, you can upgrade ram and hard drives usually to get more life out of a laptop but the processor is usually the limiting factor.

I currently have a dell windows tablet that I has a keyboard that attached to it. It's like a Microsoft surface. I like it but it has its faults. It's hard to prop up and position like a laptop. I do like having a touchscreen but typing not on a desk or table is annoying. I might buy another laptop to just have a real laptop.

Regarding the wireless earphones, if you want total freedom while you workout and not worry about the buds falling out of your ears, go with the Bose SoundsSport wireless ear buds.

Superior sound to most all other ear buds and designed to stay in your ears rather than for aesthetics. They are inured against sweat. They also have a mic for phone calls.

They aren't cheap so perhaps a good item to ask for for the Holidays.

Trust me, the cost is worth it for the superior sound and ergonomic design. I had other wireless ear buds, including the Apple air pods, and they don't sound as good and are absolutely hopeless when exercising; they constantly fall out and don't let you change songs or change the volume.

The Bose have volume, track control on the right bud, and the remainder of function control on the left bud.

Thanks for the advice! I was looking at the Powerbeats which seem to be in a similar price range. But I'm trying to determine if I want to drop that kind of money. But if I did it, might as well do it right. I still need to get basketball shoes too because all mine are for looks and not so much for fit/comfort.

I heard I might have a partition problem with my laptop. It's only recognizing my C drive.

Even as long as I've had/used this laptop, it is still in pretty good physical condition. Keyboard buttons all good too. I could try to just replace some things on it. Maybe if I wipe it and get that space back it would be all good. That being said, if upgrading the ram or hard drive, plus getting a battery, ends up costing me 100+ bucks anyway, it's probably better to get a new one. Although if I do wipe this and it works, it could be a good back up or I'd just keep it for now.

You might as well buy a 256gb ssd if you are going to wipe the computer and reinstall Windows. You can get a 256gb SSD for $30-$35 and even cheaper if you buy one used on eBay.

My laptop battery is apparently dead out of nowhere. Ordered a replacement that should be here tomorrow. If that's a no go, what should I be looking at next? Basically use it for banking, occassionally browsing the web/bill pay, and online poker a few times a month.

A tablet.

You can bank, browse, pay bills, and play online poker. Also, better form factor in my opinion. It wouldn’t hurt to consider an alternative solution to the obvious.
I have a tablet, I want a laptop.

Anytime I recommend a new pc to someone, I advise getting an intel processor, at least an i5. i5 is a middle of the road processor, not super powerful like an i7, but more powerful than the i3. In my opinion, it helps to get the longest life out of the computer, future proofing, even just a little.

I also compare each processor on www.cpubenchmark.net . They score processors on a numbered scale, and you can see when one is a better option than another. Sometimes two computers will have a similar price point, and seem like they are the basically the same, but the processor in one may be 30% weaker than the other, and if you did not check out the scores, you would never know.

What's your budget?
Been an Apple guy for many years and have a 2016 MacBook Pro that I love. Sounds like you don't need a ton of horsepower.
Would you consider a ChromeBook? My son's in college and really likes his...

I got the new MacBook Air with M1 processor. It has been fantastic so far. I have had great luck with Macs.
