Every time I see Sexton out there and then think about Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, I get sad.

SGA didn't want to play for the Cavs and refused to work out for them pre-draft. Rolling the dice to try to turn a guys view of your organization around is a huge gamble. If it was a late 1st or 2nd round pick maybe you could take that chance. Spending the #8 pick for a guy who might refuse to play or will request a trade in the near future is bad draft strategy. It would have most likely resulted in getting much less value than what Sexton is right now.

Is he asking for a trade from OKC?

It was all agent talk. He barely worked out for any team other than the Clippers.

Not working out for a lot of other teams is not the same as singling out one team as the only one for whom you don't want to play. What's the agent's motive for singling out the Cavs unless SGA truly didn't want to play here?

I think the circumstances that SGA and OKC are in are completely different than the Cavs on draft night in 2018. SGA has now been traded from 2 of his preferred destinations, once on draft night and then by the clippers. I'm not sure how the Cavs synthetically create that kind of dose of reality for SGA if they drafted him.

On OKC's side they had milked the clippers dry for all the draft picks they were allowed to trade and SGA was the only young prospect they had. The Cavs on draft night had a much bigger pool of players to choose from and didn't have to take the risk of SGA. It might have been agent talk but how would they have know that for sure. All draft picks are risky and to add on to that, that a player might not want to play for your organization, makes it hard to draft a guy. Koby probably doesn't get an extension and probably gets fired if he risks taking SGA then they have to dump him for decreased value.

The 8th pick is a gamble no matter what. Not like it's the 1 or 2. Should have picked the player with the highest upside and gambled that the kid wouldn't have turned down millions of dollars to play basketball professionally. More often than not, that's a pretty safe bet.

I think that is too simplistic for the circumstances the Cavs were in. They were about to lose LBJ after spending huge money around him and about to start a rebuild. They had no other real assets to rebuild. I don't think they were in any circumstance to take a player who hadn't refuted a rumor that he didn't want to play for them. We saw Zion quickly refute that he didn't want to play for New Orleans this summer.

I think some organizations are stable enough that they can gamble and it won't hurt them. The Cavs weren't there. If they missed completely on that #8 pick, people would have been fired and the organization reputation would have been hurt. Imagine the media and the talking heads would have said about the Cavs if LBJ left then SGA asked for a trade or refused to play for the Cavs. It would have hurt the Cavs for years to come and might have gotten more draft picks to say they didn't want to play for the Cavs.

I think the organization reputation is better now than during the rebuild with Kyrie and Dion. That should go a long way with resigning our own guys and getting free agents. No one remembers SGA putting out the rumor that he didn't want to play for us. The Cavs seem to be able to workout who they wanted and even got fairly exclusive workouts like Garland gave the cavs.

We're gonna have to keep dragging these out until the end of time:

If anybody can put forth as much evidence saying that SGA did not want to play for any other team as well, then maybe there's a conversation to be had.

Otherwise, it is as clear as day that SGA did not want to be in Cleveland, and that drafting him would have been a huge mistake. If Cavs fans want to believe otherwise, that's fine, but they need to understand that they're in unicorn/Santa/Easter Bunny territory in terms of their footing in reality.

Moving on.

Collin played the best defensive game of his young career tonight. He was really in tune with his help defenders and didn’t shy away from contact against a very stout guard like Beal and was able to stay glued to his man and even blew up a few screens. Those flashes give me hope in his long term defensive ability.

As for SGA, listen, if you pick 8th and the list of guys you maybe should have picked ahead of your actual choice is only 1–that’s generally a successful pick. Every draft will have a guy or two from the late lotto/mid first make a lot of teams look silly. The Clips followed up their genius SGA pick with Jerome Robinson who looks like a total whiff so far. Inexact science—but Sexton is not going to be a failure. We know he can score the hell out of the ball and that he has an elite work ethic. At the very least he’s not a swing and a miss, that much im
Confident in. You don’t always hit the home run.

I don’t blame the Cavs for taking a high level scorer with the elite motor/work ethic even if SGA ends up the better pick and better fit for the modern game.

The rate of total busts at 8 is so high...perspective is important. At the very least the Cavs will have maintained at least some of the asset even if they determine they have to move on from Sexton due to Darius. Because Collin is undoubtedly going to have a 10+ year career as a legit rotation guy at minimum.

I agree, also the fact that SGA didn't want to come to Cleveland should be the end of the discussion.

This is Cleveland sports. There is never a fact or scenario that puts an end to any discussion. LOL!!!!

Right. It’s bad business no matter what the industry to voluntary make an offer to someone who doesn’t give a shit to work for you...think about it. You basically saying, hey we know you’ve gone out of your way to express your disinterest in working here, but you don’t have a choice, welcome aboard! I’m strictly talking about the draft. Not players who are trying to carve out specific trades for themselves.

Eh, I don't agree with this BS of pampering and emboldening rookies...playing for the NBA is a rare privilege that very few people can enjoy, you need to shut up and be thankful to any organization willing to entrust and pay you that kind of money.

No kid should have the power to say "thanks but no thanks"; singling out any one organization should get your draft rights revoked.

Yeah, he seemed jacked up for the challenge of guarding an elite scorer in his prime averaging 27.0 ppg. He was denying him the ball and playing defense with intensity. Beal ended up going 8-for-21 for 20 points. Sexton scored 16, including a huge 3-point dagger in the final two minutes.

This is going to be a fun team to watch until they trade Thompson and Clarkson. But then we'll see more of Porter and Windler so it won't be all bad.
