Goodbye Larry Nance Jr.

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Our starting lineup is a big positive On/Off.

Cedi is +20 for the season (not counting this game)

TT is +24

Love is +10

Collin is +4

Garland -6

Larry Nance? -26!

And it's not consistent with the 2nd group. Nance has jus been this bad.
can't think of a team that would want him so we are stuck with him for a while

A lot of you are such fucking assholes about this guy. He does a lot for people in Northeast Ohio, like those with Crohn’s Disease and intellectual disabilities, and has connections to this board.

I don't think anyone has said he's a bad person. People say he's a bad player. Which he is. I've said it multiple times if he plays within his capabilities he could be a positive player. But he tries to do what he's not capable of and hurts the team. Good for him helping the community but that doesn't make him a good player.

He is young, plays with energy and works outside his comfort zone. He has the athleticism to improve and at the moment that would be the best arc we have for a big man that we are not going to trade. Worst case he is bench heat if we either acquire a decent young 4 or draft one next year. even if we don't trade love, we will trade TT, and Zizic appears to be toast. So what Henson? He is not a long term value.

26 (He turns 27 January 1st) is young now? In life sure that's youngish. In the NBA thats suppose to be your prime years much improvement in his game is unlikely. No big on the roster is a true long term piece imo. Even if KLove sticks around until his contract is over we won't be legit contenders. Nance with any other name likely wouldn't even be a Cavalier. One would question wether he would be in the NBA.

What I am confused about is that Larry's best lineups were with Love last year, and they had good numbers as a pair if I am remembering correctly? What's up? Does he need to play with a Center like Henson?

He has the footspeed to guard guys on the perimeter, but is his base just easy to move? I am having trouble figuring out why he is allowing so much penetration.

He has been getting his steals up and snatching bad passes out of the air, and that is great. Is there something wrong with his stance or what? I thought his defensive stance and the way he would hedge when he first got here were good, but he just seems like sieve right now.

I love Nance but he is the worst defensive player on the team by far according to cleaningtheglass.com. The Cavs are giving up 19.5 more points per 100 possessions when he is on the court than when he is off. The next worst is Clarkson at 11.1. Since they're usually both on the floor at the same time they are probably dragging each other's numbers down a bit.

On the offensive side the Cavs are 10.0 points worse with Nance on the floor. Adding in the defense they're 29.5 points better over 100 possessions when Nance is not in the game. The next worst are Clarkson and Porter at 12.9 and 12.1. If you go strictly by the on/off numbers Nance is by far the worst player in the nine-man rotation.

All of the Cavs' starters are in the positive, meaning the Cavs outscore their opponents when they are on the floor. All four reserves are in the negative. Obviously the Cavs' weakness is their bench.

That could change once Henson and Windler can play. Henson would be a big improvement over Nance, defensively at least. I have no idea whether Windler would be an improvement over Porter.

Nance looks like he could be a good defender with his length, agility, and jumping ability but for some reason it's not happening. I've noticed a lot of layups being made on him, possibly because he tries to avoid committing fouls. He frequently ends up getting called for a foul, anyway. When he's on the floor opponents make a lot more free throws. Nance is in the worst 4% in the league in that category, but that could be misleading because he comes in at the end of the quarter when opponents may already be in the bonus or almost there.

The Cavs give up a lot more offensive rebounds when he's in the game, leading to second chance points. The only Cavs player worse in preventing offensive rebounds is Porter. When Nance is in the game with two guards, Porter and Cedi they are at a big rebounding disadvantage which leads to extra shots for the opponent.

Last year Nance was a solid defender - opponents averaged 1.4 fewer points per 100 when he was on the floor. He was in the middle of the pack, so I don't know what's going on this year, but poor defense and rebounding by the rest of the reserves could be a contributing factor.

I think the second unit is so bad that he gets burned trying to cover for the other guys. Kind of what happened with Cedi last year with the metrics being worse than his actual performance/ability.

That is a good thought. Delly and Clarkson can't seem to keep anyone in front of them.

He is looking good after a slow start to the season. I was wondering where the passes and steals were, but they have started showing up. He has been good with TT surprisingly. Getting really wide open 3's when he plays with Tristan.

He should be Kevin Love’s mentor

I've seen studies on efficiency in the NBA, and yes Nance is still comfortably in his physical prime. There is a huge jump that begins at age 26 and lasts through age 29. Seeing that Nance has developed more as a consistent perimeter player this season, his progress checks out. Younger players might be able to make more spectacular plays, but consistency comes with experience.
