From a column by Kelsey Russo in The Athletic on the Cavs at the halfway point:
"For Collin Sexton, he described “togetherness” as the biggest growth for the team.
“We’re pretty much playing for one another and we’re out there just competing,” Sexton said. “At the beginning of the season, it was a lot less communication, a lot of attitudes, a lot of disrespect and stuff like that towards each other. But now, I feel like we’re all coming together and coming into our own.”
John Henson gave one concrete example of growth they’ve seen in the number of passes. Ball movement has been an area of emphasis throughout the first half of the season, and it’s been more noticeable in the recent stretch of games. The Cavs ranked 20th in passes per game through the first 20 games, but they’re 12th in games since Dec. 6. That inches them up to 16th on the season with 289 passes per game. For context, the Warriors lead the league with over 333.
“Like the first 20 games we never got over 250 passes in a game, and now we consistently have over 300. So, that’s like a little bit of growth, and you don’t always see it in the wins and losses, but between us and between the coaches and players we see that growth,” he said.
With that ball movement comes an increase in assist numbers. Beilein emphasized how assist numbers are rising for players like Love, Sexton, Darius Garland, Tristan Thompson and Cedi Osman, among others. There’s a willingness to share the ball and pass out to find other players on the floor. It’s still a work in progress because through 41 games the Cavs average 21.5 assists per game, which ranks 28th in the league."
Baby steps. Now we wait and see if anything happens before the trade deadline. With Love playing back-to-back nights last week and scoring 29 points on the second night I'm hoping somebody takes notice and makes us an offer. Thompson had 22 rebounds last night including 10 on the offensive glass.
