2020 Buckeyes Football

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Your position is that an accusation results in immediate and permanent dismissal? The bar for dismissal from the team should be far lower than the courts, but to say their should be no grounds for the accused to defend themselves is a bit much.
That’s definitely not what I said.

Agreed with Ohio. With this type of social climate the pressure was going to mount fast as far as an outcome was concerned; you just can’t have that kind of issue hanging over a program for an elongated period of time. Maybe I’m totally wrong and the repercussions aren’t what I suspect.

At any rate, they’re seemingly in front of it and they can answer questions now, and just move past it then get to spring ball

Here's Day's statement (bolded emphasis mine):
“I have dismissed Amir Riep and Jahsen Wint from our football program,” Ryan Day said in a statement. “I am not making any statement on the criminal charges, but it is clear they did not live up to our standards and my expectations. The athletics department will make sure they both continue to have access to the health and well-being resources available to students and student-athletes. Due to the ongoing criminal investigation, I will not be commenting further.”

I am curious as to the language that the school has on this. I am assuming by being kicked off the team, they lose their scholarship as well, but they still are treated like they are on scholarship? Or was their scholarship not revoked? Are they really kicked off the team if they still have these resources?

This would be available to all students.

You wouldn’t lose access to the health and well being resources without being convicted of something, there is really no upside for these kids to not have mental health care at this moment.

I understand that as long as they are enrolled as students they get normal students benefits.

I am just surprised that their policy is that if players are no longer part of their team, they still get all the benefits of being a student athlete. Unless I am misreading it.

The statement says "available to students and student athletes."

Yes, and I am wondering if they are still considered "student athletes" right now.

I think Riep was likely going to be starting at nickel. This opens the door for Johnson to get plenty of opportunities.

They are not, as of last night.

They are still students, at the moment. Which, I would assume, is pending the outcome of the indictment.
Which is why I think it's weird that they are still be treated as student athletes. Maybe it's part of their policy that they get those resources for as long as they are a student, regardless of athlete status. Or maybe they get them for a certain period. I am not sure, which is why I thought his quote was a little confusing.

They aren’t. They are being treated as students, which they still are (for now).

It was confusing. Technically, as long as they're still enrolled in the school as students, they would have access to OSU's mental health services available to the student body. I am willing to bet athletes get priority over your conventional student with these services and maybe that is what he was alluding to regarding mentioning the athletic department.

Feels like it was just a fluff statement to show they haven't entirely turned their back on them until a conviction perhaps - definitely feels "PR professional" driven.

I don't have a problem with Day being among the highest paid coaches in America.

But I struggle with the notion that football coaches at public universities make 5+mil.

Been that way for quite awhile now.
