Just tried Imperator:Rome last night, that game is mind melting and the UI is really awful.

Huge fan of their games, though. EU4, HOI4, CK2, VICKY I've logged in way too many hours into those games.

Anyone else into these games?

My first game of crusader kings 2 I married a random princess because she was a genius. A few years later I inherited the Byzantine empire that was at war with the entire Middle East.

I've been trying to get into Stellaris, but it's a bit overwhelming for a newcomer, especially when you're trying to balance it with other, real life commitments. I've been scouring the web, looking for tutorials. I like the concept of 4X though, as someone who has also recently picked up the Total War series.

Total War is a lot more approachable while still maintaining a lot of depth. And much cooler battles.

I've played all the EU games. Each version as it came out. Been a while since the last time I played, though. I think I have like 3k hours played in EU4.

I checked today, surprisingly I only have 300 hrs in EU4.

Stellaris is pretty great, look up guides and mechanics on the YouTube channel aspec if you're having issues. Found them really helpful when I started playing it and keeping up with new mechanics when they are changed

Yup. As someone who enjoys history, I'm really liking Three Kingdoms. I'll probably hold off on getting DLC until I've played it some more, but the battle tactics are fun and interesting while the other aspects - relationships, diplomacy, civil approval, etc. - are great as well.

ETA: Planning to pick up TW: Warhammer I and II when they go on sale. Cost is the only thing that's preventing me from doing so right now, as the prospect of spending a ton of money on two games and DLC has given me some pause.

I've been using aspec frequently, and I'm also following the r/Stellaris subreddit, which has a lot of great resources. I definitely want to keep at it - the game looks phenomenal once you get past the early game grind and just trying to figure out the finer details.

The historical games are great. Played Rome, Shogun, and Medieval II to death. Then took a break. Got back into TW when they went Warhammer. The fantasy setting just kills the historical stuff, IMO. So many more possibilities and the game flavor and presentation is just absolutely top notch. Warhammer II might challenge WC3 for my favorite strategy game.

Cost is the biggest factor preventing me from picking it up right now, along with the fact that I'm currently playing two other 4X games.

FYI, I think you guys would enjoy CK2 if you enjoy a lot of the fantasy stuff.

While it is historical, the events in that game are amazing. Including becoming immortal and appointing Glitterhoof the Horse as your chancellor if you go nuts. Plus, the GoT mod is absolutely amazing.

I still crack open Medieval II on occasion. Lots of really outstanding mods for it also. Third Age Total War in particular is fun, though you have to screw with some of the scripts to make it more playable.

Could probably get by without most of the lord packs for now which is most of the dlc. Theres a couple totally new factions in the dlc you can hold off on too untill you’ve put plenty of hours into the game and see if you’re yearning for more.

lord packs just add new legendary lords with unique starting positions and often some special mechanics. Usually a couple new units too for the respective factions. Not really crucial until as the base game has pleeeenty to keep you occupied.

Once I got used to the mechanics I really enjoyed the early game grind. Gives really powerful empire and tech upgrades if you can complete event log chains. The mid game used to have a huge slow down but now isn't as bad since they added a rng for a mid mini game crisis (doesn't always happen). The end game has always been pretty good for a 4x but got better after the addition of titans and megastructures.

I'm really looking forward to the Federation update and some of the new mechanics that's going to bring.
