Deni Avdija NBA Draft Scouting Report

Deni has an intriguing skill set with his ability to stroke the 3pt shot and score in the half court. He plays an all around game, has a decent physical build but his greatest NBA skill is his shooting ability.

As a 6-8 3pt shooter he doesn't need a lot of space to get his shot off and he's got a smooth, quick and just about picture perfect release. He shoots with confidence, follows through on his shot

Another big strength is his passing ability, which reminds a little bit of Luka Doncic. He's a quick slasher who draws the defense and can light opposing teams up with his passes. He's not really a primary ball-handler type of player but he can create offense for himself and others.

On defense he's purely a wing, lacking the strength and power to guard in the paint and lacking top end agility to stay with guards. He gives good effort and seems to know team concepts and when to help defend but don't expect him to make any all defensive teams. His less than ideal +1 wingspan doesn't help.

Deni Avdija = Cedi Osman?

No offense meant to you, Q, but if this didn't say "Deni Avdija" at the top I would have no idea what prospect this is talking about. Mike Miller? Really? :chuckle:

Hey, I personally don't know shit about any of these guys. Just posting things to get discussion going in what is otherwise a very dead forum. That's why there is the "discuss" tag in the title. If you think it is a shitty scouting report, then help out a bit and please critique it and/or post a better one. I was actually hoping someone might do that as a way of adding more depth to the thread.

Fair enough; I'll get to it now:

This is misleading right off the bat. His scoring ability, and in particular his shooting ability, are probably the biggest questionmarks he faces as a prospect.

As a 6-8 3pt shooter he doesn't need a lot of space to get his shot off and he's got a smooth, quick and just about picture perfect release. He shoots with confidence, follows through on his shot

Again, this massively overstates the case for him as a shooter. He shot just above 30% from 3, and just above 50% from the line for the year. Any worse and we'd be talking in terms of MKG comparisons. It's true that his solid mechanics give some room for optimism here, but this is an area where you're hoping he'll be league-average for an NBA wing, not an area where you're expecting him to be exceptional.

Another big strength is his passing ability, which reminds a little bit of Luka Doncic. He's a quick slasher who draws the defense and can light opposing teams up with his passes. He's not really a primary ball-handler type of player but he can create offense for himself and others.

The Doncic mention here is terrible. He's a good passer, and an especially good passer for his size, but he's not going to develop into a point forward except in an absolute best-case ceiling scenario, both because he's not an elite passer, and because he's not elite at creating his own offense off the dribble. At least the scouting report acknowledges this by saying he's not really a primary ball-handler type.

On defense he's purely a wing, lacking the strength and power to guard in the paint and lacking top end agility to stay with guards. I completely disagree with this assessment. I think he has a great combination of size, agility, and IQ, which gives him excellent potential to switch 1-4 or even 1-5. It's worth considering that he has likely grown since measuring 6'7.5" in socks (~6'9" in shoes) at age 17. He's already a very good rebounder and shot blocker, and has the potential to make big leaps in those areas as his frame continues to improve.

I just hate that it all came up as "Q-Tip said". :chuckle: I haven't watched a minute of college basketball -- much less international ball -- this entire year/season, so I have no opinion on any of these schmucks.

The shooting stats you posted seem pretty persuasive in terms of him not being a proven sharpshooter, though.

I salute you, Tip.

Sorry about that! That was unintentional and I didn't consider how it would show up as I wrote the post (I've fixed it now) :chuckle: .

On the topic of his shooting stats, it's worth noting that the picture doesn't get any rosier if you go further back to previous seasons and tournaments. Across his entire RealGM profile (450 3-point attempts, 363 free throw attempts), he's shooting 32% from 3 and 56% from the line. That's not a dealbreaker if you're looking at him as a big defensive-minded wing who can play a glue guy role on offense, but it's probably a dealbreaker if you're hoping he becomes the next Mike Miller.

This is the guy I want, but the shooting numbers do give me pause.

He fits well and would improve the defense and ball movement probably. His floor game looks a lot like Cedi to me. I think right now he is 19 and similar to what Cedi is right now. That could lead to an impressive player down the line. He might be Evan Turner tho
