BROWNS OFF-SEASON 2020

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Browns coach Kevin Stefanski plans to keep free agent addition Jack Conklin at right tackle.
The Browns received truly horrific blindside play in 2019, but Conklin has spent his entire career on the right side. Right now, Kendall Lamm or Chris Hubbard would make the most sense opposite Conklin, though tackle will be a possibility for the Browns in the draft. Hubbard was unspeakably bad on the right side last season.

Hubbard was not unspeakably bad last season, we speak about it at lengths how bad Hubbard was last season.

lamm or Hubbard have zero shot of playing LT unless someone got hurt. It’s obviously going to be someone we draft or trade for.

This feels like it’s a strategic statement... “we are content with our tackles. In fact, it’s likely we don’t even draft one. There is no need to jump ahead of us. But hey, let’s talk about trading down, or not. We’re happy with whatever.”

That's an excellent point. As long as the NFL is committed to keeping the draft on the original date, then we're three weeks out -- prime smokescreen season. Yes, it's probably true that Conklin will stay at RT -- it's been his position all along -- but the Browns' 2020 LT is likely going to be wearing a cap and [insert appropriate social-distancing replacement for shaking Roger Goodell's hand] later this month.

This is what they call the Freddie Test. Obvious situations are presented, and they want to see if Stefanski's smart enough to not totally fuck it up.

Very reasonable deal for Randell
I actually think Randall is a really good free safety in a cover 2 and tampa 2 schemes. I just do not know why the Raiders wanted him. Guenther does not value linebackers in coverage and asks the safeties to play a lot of zone.

I hope he figures it out, though. I really like Randall and think he is very talented. He has good speed and is actually a pretty intuitive player when his assignments are clear.

I'll always have a soft spot in my heart for him for handing the intercepted ball to Hue on the sidelines during that Bengals blowout.

I guess I have to ask what the value is of a safety who's too dumb to be trusted to play as a safety in the modern NFL?

If having him on the field limits the scheme you can use--because you can't give him certain responsibilities, does having that player, even in a position to succeed, actually make your defense better?

Call me a Randall hater (I think his position in the NFL is depth at safety and corner--and was admittedly never high on him) but I just don't see it with him.

I also have a huge boner for certain types of safeties--either the wild card guys who can do it all, or the single-high monsters who can play center field. So there's a ton of bias coming from me here.

Man, that’s wild about Randall. 10 months ago we were taking about how he was going to command 10-12m per year on the market.

Shit changes in a blink.
In fairness, Browns fans have tended to overvalue their solid players during this twenty year journey in the desert of shitty football. Especially in regards to the secondary.

Yeah, I mean, he’s definitely a utility piece. I think he’s a starter on a team that plays a lot of cover-2 and Tampa-2. He’s just not a starter for most defenses.

Very true. The reason is we get so used to seeing horrible to below average players that when we get see a player that slightly above average we vastly overrate them
