Board & Card Games? Not Risk or Monopoly in here...

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
We played Pandemic two weeks ago.. gotta have a sense of humor..

Also played teraforming Mars, which was pretty good, and played a round of throwback Avalon Hill Battle of the Bulge..
The important question is, did you name the different colored diseases?

. Nope we stuck with the colors.. but the outbreak was centered in Asia and took off in Milan..We managed to beat it through extreme luck, but I have heard that is not a common outcome..

Just played Pret-A-Porter for the first time. Really, really good.

I've played nearly all the games mentioned in this thread but wanted to highlight Cosmic Encounter, which over time has been the most consistent and fun game my group of friends has played. Basically each of you is an alien race that has various hilarious game-breaking abilities. You each have a set of planets in your galaxy and a bunch of ships. On your turn you can send some of these ships to encounter the galaxy of another player. You can either attack the other players' planet or negotiate with them. The goal is just to get your ships to land on five planets belonging to any other players. It's really a card game in essence (there's a common set of cards that you all draw from that you use to attack, negotiate, etc) but the alien powers make it insane. Like there's one alien race call the "Bride" that gets to pick another player and share all cards equally between them but then at any point can divorce them and take half their cards and then marry someone else. There's the "Saboteur" that plants bombs on people's planets. There's the "Loser" that wins an encounter by losing. The "magician" that can swap the cards players play before they are revealed. There's well over a hundred alien races to choose from, and many with much crazier mechanics than that. The advantage is that every game feels very different depending on which aliens are involved. And any player can ask for allies to join when attacking another planet so it's entirely conceivable that multiple people can win at once. There's also a very prisoner's dilemma mechanic to how attacking and negotiating works, which leads to great backstabs and memorable moments. Best part is, the game is pretty fast (about an 1 hour on average with 5 people) and up to 8 people can play.

Fiance is obsessed with board games. Wrecking me in everything we’ve played so far. Need some militaristic alpha male shit to play with her any recs?

How hardcore are we talking here? There are some old style military board games that are a blast, but they have a bit of a learning curve. Pretty much everything from ancient warfare to sci-fi.

You also could try some of the cooperative games if she keeps kicking your ass. I really like Eldritch Horror for groups. You usually lose, but it's fun anyway.

I’ll take whatever ya got sir!

Cooperative games is a good idea.

King Maker,. Third Reich..

But Pandemic is a cooperative game..

Pandemic is a good, relatively simple cooperative game. Also pretty cheap.

Beyond that, it would help to know a bit of your interests. I mentioned Eldritch Horror above - it's a more complex cooperative game with a horror theme. Basically, you're traveling round the world trying to prevent it from being destroyed or devoured by one of various horrible monstronsities, or before your characters die or go insane. Mansions of Madness basically involves creeping around a house, trying to find clues and other things before some something horrible happens...or again, going insane or being killed. Second Edition is great because an app makes setup much easier. And they're true cooperative -- either the players win together, or they lose together.

If you want a true wargame, then knowing the period/themes in which you are interested would help. There are historical games from World War 2, Napoleonic, ancient, etc. etc., then there are some games based on Lord of the Rings, Star Wars, etc... Those games usually have some pretty complex rules, and takes some time to learn.

I'd also suggest https://boardgamegeek.com/browse/boardgame as a reference. Tons of ratings for literally thousands of games. You can see how games are rated, learn a bit about them -- pay attention to things like complexity rating - etc.. I also know that some of the games can be found cheaper than are listed on that site.

Just rip the band-aid off and recommend Twilight Imperium to them :chuckle:

Interested in any sort of period of military history. Sci fi, fantasy, all up my alley. Everything you’ve discussed so far sounds dope, if that helps.

Well, you're going to have to make the pick. I'd suggest going to boardgamegeek.com and reading about any game before buying it, though. Also, if you happen to go to boardgamegeek, see something you really like, but can't find it anywhere, let me know. There is a fantastic brick and mortar game store close to me that has shit-tons of wargames, many of which are out of print. I know the guy who runs it so I can get something even though it is closed.

For "war" games to recover your manhood from your wife:

Twilight Imperium was mentioned above, and it's great. But it is complex. If that doesn't bother you, then get that.

Memoir '44 has a rep as a comparatively simple, but very good WW2 game.

Axis and Allies 1941 - Never played this personally, but it apparently is extremely popular and well-reviewed. I don't think you could go wrong with this.

War of the Ring (Tolkien, obviously). It's a great strategy war game.

Hannibal and Hamilcar -- very well-reviewed Roman era war game.

Cooperative Games

Pandemic has been mentioned. It's a well-designed game, though I personally think it's a bit lacking in "flavor" Personal bias -- as I've said, I really like both Eldritch Horror and Mansions of Madness (Second Edition). Read up on both of those.
