2020 Off-Season Rumors/News

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Is there any doubt that Lindor would sit if he got service time??

How will loss of revenue affect free agents and the contracts offered next offseason? Are we going to see a lot of guys not come close to the money they think they should get?

I would say it will have a significant effect on free agent salaries. It probably sets up new battle lines, which is not good for baseball's immediate future.

Do you mean to choose to sit out the season even if they play?

This is counting as a year of service time for Lindor regardless of what else happens.

Yes, him choosing to sit if he can opt out of playing and still getting credit.
Meaning, we may never see him in a Indians uniform again.

I mean, he's still under contract next year as well.

Not sure what sitting out this year would accomplish besides creating a sour relationship. So, no, I don't think there should be any concern about him sitting if they end up playing.

For some reason I thought this was his last season. Thanks for the insight.

Most of the discussion surrounding re-negotiation of the terms & conditions of return to play involve including the 2021 season.. The salary of all but the most elite players (and even they are at risk) are clearly in question.. The contrarian in me says that even though Frankie Lindor was adamant about not extending.. he may take a number from a previously offered discussion and run off into the sunset wearing his new Chief Wahoo tat that he bought with his new pile of wampum !!..

The thing is, I'm not sure that the league or individual teams actually benefits financially from more Covid-related viewership. The media outlets that purchased those rights do. There's also the issue of clawbacks by the media outlets for games that were not played. But I agree that some kind of guaranteed minimum plus additional contingent payments may be the best way to go.
............................
The TV is the TV deal.. The amount paid was already set for the season (spelled out in the multi-year TV contract).. The question becomes the advertising..
Who is selling the advertising? What is the ad rate for said advertising?? Who is getting that ad money???

Perhaps additional viewership will drive up the ad rates for the spots. I can see that cause/ effect relationship. More eyes means more demand which in turn drives up the cost for the ad spot. See the Super Bowl ad rates vs a regular season or pre-season football games as an example of that.

But IF the TV outlets are selling (& thereby profiting from the ad spots being sold), then the various owners are at different places of getting money from it. Remember - STO is no longer a Dolan family business, it parts of FoxSports..

My guess is the TV outlets are controlling the advertising revenues. That is why they agree to pay such large amounts of money to show the game on TV.

so what the hell is MLB asking for in return? This makes it sound like the owners just completely caved
My understanding of that tweet is that the season will be even shorter than the previously proposed 82 game season. Fewer games mean fewer operations costs.

I don't think we are out of the woods yet. I believe the players want a ~115 game season and the owners want to keep it under 82 to minimize their losses.

50 games? Thats not enough to be honest for the players when they want 114.

That essentially would mean the league minimum guys would make less than 170k this season and all players would make less than 31% of their full season salary. I think the players wanna play, but i don't see them risking their lives for less than what they feel they should get. MLB has got to do better than that!
