Growing up in north east Ohio it wasn't hard to be
a Cleveland Indians fan. But for me being a punk kid
that couldn't agree with anything my father said I
always rooted against the tribe. It didn't matter who
they were playing (except the Yankee pig asses) I rooted
against the home team.

When Cleveland built Jacobs field my dad waited in line
at Buehler’s grocery store for hours to get his tickets
for the season. For the 95 season my father smartened
up and found a California ticket master line that
he could get through on. His best friend, my God Father
would do the same. From 1994 to 2000 we would drive the
90 miles and go to 8-16 games per year to sit in our
bleacher seats.

On June 3rd 2020 when I got home from work, missing
baseball like everyone on this forum is feeling, I started
searching for some classic Indians games. One game in
particular kept creeping into my head. Not able to remember
what year it was, I started searching box scores from
1994-2000 with no luck, I go to bed. In the morning
I text my dad and ask if he remembers what year this
game between the Indians and Blue Jays took place.
He suggested I call my God Father who shares a name
with a former Indian who batted cleanup for the 97 team.
I continued to scour the box scores but to no avail.
for some reason 11-8 was the score I remembered.

Later in the afternoon as I am getting dressed for work
my father text me back, "Today's date, June 4th 1995.
I just heard it on the radio.... how-a-bout that."

The baseball gods work in mysterious ways.

Why is the game so special to me? This is the day, 25 years ago, I
became a Cleveland Indians fan.

The game started with the Blue Jays scoring 7 in the
first. I'm sure I started talking trash. In the 3rd
the Jays scored another. In the bottom of the 3rd
Carlos Baerga smacks a double to drive in a run.
At this moment I say to dad, "If the Indians comeback
I will forever become and Indians fan".

After that 1 run inning I don't remember much. Except
It being one of the loudest and craziest turn of events
I have ever witnessed in person. The game ends with
a Paul Sorrento walk off home run, with the Indians
winning 9-8. I don't know why 11-8 stuck out in my head
but it 25 years ago give me break.

A few years later, My brother, dad, and I were at the
Belden Village Indians team shop looking for a Christmas
present for my god father. We see beautiful framed
picture of Jacobs field. As the 3 of us look in awe of the
picture my dad notices the scoreboard, 1-8. The exact
moment when I made the bet. Fueled by fate, my father
purchased the photograph, put the game ticket in the frame
and presented it to my god father. That picture I'm sure
still sits above his lazy boy.

When I returned home from work June 4th, 2020 I searched
the internet to find this game, with no luck. If anyone
has a tape of this game I would gladly pay for any
inconvenience it would take to get a copy. Also if you
have a copy of this photograph of the Jake or know
where I can purchase it, I will forever be in your debt.
Sorry for the long first post but I have to see that
game!!!!

GO TRIBE!!!!!!!!!!!

Great story, thanks for posting it. That was the 100-44 team that went to the World Series. They were never out of a game with that lineup.

Ogea and Taverez combined for 8.2 innings of relief with one run allowed to give the offense a chance to put nine runs on the board.

You converted over to being an Indians fan at the perfect time. The team was getting really good and had a new stadium. It was all systems go.

I too remember this game vividly. I would've been 7 at the time, and watched it on TV. You're leaving out a very important part that made our comeback even more unlikely.

The pitcher that we were facing that day? The defending Cy Young award winner. David Cone.

I was a (shared) season ticket holder at that time - section 142. I can't remember who I went to the game with (probably my ex-wife) but I remember that game vividly.

David Cone was pitching for Toronto, so when the Indians fell behind 8-0 it looked hopeless. A few rows in front of me a very nice young lady from the Indians came by and had a birthday package and spiel for a boy. She said that it was sad that the Indians were having a bad day but was determined to cheer up the young man.

As it turned out he had a hell of a birthday. That HR by Paulie got out of town in a hurry.

I also saw the game against the Angels where Albert Belle smashed Lee Smith deep into Davey Tree Park for another walkoff home run.

It's utterly unbelievable that the Tribe from 1994-2019 has not won it all. So many close calls. We were done in by a strike, the Braves finally pitching in the Series like they could, the blown save, blowing a 3-1 ALCS to the Red Sox, running out of gas in 2016 at the very end (Andrew Miller was an absolute BEAST), a 22 game winning streak STILL not being enough, a drone, Corey Kluber having two awful outings against the effing Yankees -- I'm sure I missed a bunch. During all this time we're still a small market team in an era where big markets have such an advantage.

I hope the players and owners get their heads out of their asses soon or 2020 will be the year without baseball.

I love stories like this one. Thanks so much for it.

I remember this game.

ESPN was showing another game I think, and then cut to the Indians game in the 9th.

I was living in Colorado at the time in high school, and they had another game on. I was glued to the score ticker.

It was one of those amazing comebacks that heralded the arrival of a new power.

I loved those Indians teams. That year they were an ace away. And of course that Braves team played their best series of ball.

Still remember WS Game 5 when Belle took Maddox into the bullpen.

Thanks for the Ogea/Taverez reference...I was pretty sure I was at that game, but your note triggered my memory. There were so many come backs that season, they all blur a bit on me. :)

Great story -- thanks for sharing. I do not know of a recording at this point, but I will keep it in mind, as I know a number of "collector types".
