The "What are you playing now?" Thread

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I will say I find the ammo limits in this game to be obnoxious. I assume you probably get access to more storage later, but it just feels like an attempt to arbitrarily spike the difficulty by only letting you carry sixteen bullets for your pistol early on. You're telling me this chick can't carry more than three clips? Fuck off outta here it's the fungal zombie apocalypse.

Probably more belongs in the TV thread, but if anyone has been following the HBO adaptation of The Last of Us, they've hired the Chernobyl showrunner to head the show and the guy who directed all five Chernobyl episodes will direct the pilot.

This one definitely has the potential to be the first great videogame adaptation.

I’m a decent ways in. Gameplay is virtually the same as the first but I actually liked the first for its gameplay as well as narrative.

I see where the story is going and the game is a real downer. But I expected that. Think a lot of the game’s hate is irrational, but some of the critiques are also valid.

Will do a full writeup when I beat it.

Like every review I read talked about almost nothing except how horrifically violent and depressing the game is but, if I'm being honest, it doesn't really seem any more violent than a boatload of other games I've played.

It’s definitely up there as one of the more violent games I’ve played, but it’s more the nature of the story. It’s just bleak.

Some of the violence is definitely more graphic than in other games, but at the same time, but there are dozens of games with absurd body counts that don't even attempt to comment on the nature of the violence you're committing. In every Call of Duty game you mow down hundreds if not thousands of enemies and are never asked to even think about the moral implications of what you're doing. Hell, Grand Theft Auto games are full of wanton violence and it's almost celebrated, albeit in a more satirical manner.

I read one review that complained about how you have no agency in this game, meaning you have to do all the horrible things the game asks of you. Yeah, that's true in a lot of games and it's not a fucking problem in them. Some games are linear and tell a singular story where you don't get to make any choices. Other games allow you to make choices and shape the narrative. Still others have no real story at all and are just mindless fun. I don't think there's a wrong way to do it. It's just a narrative/design choice, and complaining about it seems silly. I can understand complaining about the quality of a story, but complaining about the way it's told when you don't complain about the hundreds of other games that tell a story the same way is asinine.

I'm not really far enough along in the story (just started Day 2 in Seattle) to comment on the quality of it on the whole, but thus far the writing has been strong and the gameplay has mostly been fun, outside of one frustrating sequence where I had to run from a horde of infected, but the clunky controls caused me to get stuck on the horde and prevented me from running up a thin escalator by which I was supposed to escape. I really enjoyed a brief foray into a museum in a flashback from a narrative standpoint. It was a nice breather after a fairly long infected segment in dark subway systems.

My favorite moment thus far was when I entered those subways and a group of human enemies followed me in. Rather than try to pick them off one by one while also dealing with all the clickers and hunters in the area, I instead forced the humans into a fight with the infected by throwing a few well-placed molotovs and let them beat the fuck out of each other for a few minutes, then picked off the handful of remaining infected and the lone human survivor that remained. One cool little AI tidbit was that that sole survivor, rather than continue fighting, found a place to hide. That was a really neat touch, although sadly for him Ellie has the ability to see through walls and easily found him and slit his throat.

I agree with pretty much all of this. See how we feel at the end. I’m about where you are sounds like but probably gonna slow down a bit here. A lot of the criticism you mentioned is very eye roll worthy, I do agree.

I get that this maybe wasn't the best time for a game like The Last of Us Part II to release, but it feels like a lot of reviewers are taking that out on the game, which is silly. It's not the game's fault that it was set to be finished right as a global pandemic hit. It's not as if anyone could have predicted that.

What's even worse is the losers review-bombing the game without even playing it, largely because they're butt hurt that it has prominent gay characters.

I don’t even think the latter is the issue for most people. One of the leaks was that it shoehorned in transgender characters which I agree would have been pretty asinine, but it was fake. I feel like a lot of that sentiment is carrying over and people who haven’t even played it are still upset.

We’ve known Ellie was gay forever now. And there was no vitriol until a month ago.

Early game spoilers:

The other main thing is the manner of Joels death. It was upsetting for me and that was kind of the point. I thought it was awful and I wasn’t happy but I get why it was done and won’t hold it against them. People wanted a heroic send off and that wasn’t going to fly for the type of story they want to tell.

However it seems like the thing that has people most upset... not sure if you’re there yet but it’s actually my one legit gripe so far and it’s a big one. Still, I get why it was done.

These three things combined with Sony’s copyright bullshit before the game released seem to be giving people reasons to nitpick every tiny thing. They’re so upset about these that suddenly the gameplay sucks too, the writing sucks too, etc. That’s what I find a bit unfair about all the criticism.

I think review bombing in general is stupid. Just don't play the fucking game. It's not that hard. If you play it and dislike it, that's totally fine. Art is subjective, and games that some people love are hated by others. But to give a zero to a game you never intend to play? Fuck off outta here with that shit. I didn't watch the new Star Wars movie because everyone said it sucked, but I'm not going to go to imdb and give it a zero because, duh, I haven't watched it. It probably does suck, but it's not on me to tell other people that when I have no real idea if that's the case or not.

And sorry, but there's just no way a game as meticulously crafted as The Last of Us Part II deserves a zero. If you hate the story, maybe you give it a six or a seven, but it's a very well-designed game with almost no bugs that I've seen at launch (a rarity these days), beautiful visuals, tough but enjoyable and diverse combat, typically great voice acting from a Naughty Dog game, etc. You can argue about how good the game is, and that's fine, and I might even agree with that after I finish it (not far enough to come close to grading it yet), but in no way is it a 0/10. That's ridiculous. Mass Effect 3 had the most dog shit ending imaginable and I still can't fathom giving the game as a whole a zero.

As far as whatever your gripe is, I literally stopped playing last night when I left the theater at the start of Day 2 in Seattle, so you're either further along than me or you're talking about...

Dina's pregnancy, in which case I have no idea why that would upset people. It was a plot point I saw coming from a mile away, much like Joel's death. Literally the only thing I knew about this game going in was that Ellie was on a quest for revenge, and the only thing that really made sense in that scenario would be Joel being murdered. The second they introduced the secondary group of characters who were looking for a man in Jackson, it was pretty obvious to me what was going to happen. It didn't play out quite how I expected it to, but it was obviously inevitable.

Nah that’s not it. Maybe I am a little further along. Trying to tipetoe around spoilers though it’s not really a spoiler as it’s something you’ve kinda sorta seen already. We can just discuss it when we both beat the game.

But I’m totally with you on review bombing. Absolutely ridiculous. And the new Star Wars movie wasn’t very good no.

Yeah, I figured that probably wasn't it but it's the only thing I could think of based on the story so far.

My timeline may be messed up, it’s something you are probably already seeing coming or familiar with. I got accidentally spoiled on a couple things like I always do with big releases so I went in with a bit more knowledge so I ain’t gonna risk it.

Will try to beat this shit by end of the week.

I've pretty much managed to avoid any and all spoilers for this game, and am actively avoiding the comments sections of reviews until I finish it. I only know about the review bombing because the news feed on my phone has linked me to a few articles about it.

@Chris is the thing you were talking about...

...playing as Abby for a bunch of the game? Because I actually did know about that I guess. I didn't really consider it a major spoiler since you play as her for half the prologue too. I'm actually still not to the point where you switch back to her, though.

I just got to the part where you run into Jesse and then steal the truck and have a fun little car chase set piece.
