BROWNS OFF-SEASON 2020

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Browns coach Kevin Stefanski remains unsure if he or OC Alex Van Pelt will call plays.
“That really remains to be seen,‘' Stefanski said, adding he plans to use the preseason to evaluate the decision. “I’d like to get everybody back in the building, get out there practicing and get together before we make that decision. That decision will be made before (Week 1), I promise you that.” It would be a load off Stefanski's shoulders to delegate play-calling duties, but that is probably more responsibility than he will be willing to surrender as he looks to make his name as a head coach.

Wondering if anyone has concern over this not having been decided yet — or if it’s just the staff unwilling to disclose it publicly

It's a good thing. The coaching staff wants Stefanski in a role where he can oversee the work of assistant coaches under him, but some coaches will certainly need more structure and less rope than others. Stefanski isn't trying to do everything himself, who h we all know is impossible for a first year head coach.

So... with Jamal Adams still not being moved yet... I know we weren't on his short list of destinations he mentioned. But I have to imagine it wouldn't be hard to convince him to come here and join up with all the other LSU guys plus Joe Woods.

Do we have any idea what the NYJ price tag is? I'd be on the phone already offering our first plus a future third.

He can fill the defensive play-calling duties gap on day one that losing Schobert created. The idea of bringing in his football IQ to help our young defense, plus just the sheer talent of Adams/Delpit/Ward/Greedy in the secondary is filthy. It would give us the chance to be the best secondary in football, and give our defense an identity--a "No Fly Zone" in the back end, that allows Myles to just pin his ears back and attack more often, while the linebackers just have to read and react without any heavy responsibility on them sounds like a recipe for success.

If it was *just* the draft picks, I'd be on board. But he's gonna need an expensive extension, along with Myles, Ward and Baker. Thats where acquiring him becomes too expensive.

I'm on the fence, man. On one hand I know how Dorsey'ish trading for Adams would be. Dude wants big bucks. Maybe we can get a year out of him without paying but after that? Why wouldn't he be just as difficult with us as he is with the Jets? Are we gonna pay him 16 million and Myles 22-25 million next year and still not have Baker/Denzel/Chubb signed? Do we just let Chubb walk even if he get us 1800 yards on the ground and carry us to a playoff berth?

It's just short-sighted to make this trade, not to mention we will lose a 1st round pick and a 3rd. That's significant draft capital that could be used to help bolster our offensive and defensive lines with young talent.

I'm leaning no.

On the other hand, acquiring a talent like Jamal Adams could transform this defense into a top 10ish unit. I know people like to joke about our optimism but we'd have a legit Super Bowl roster with Adams. I think he's somewhat overrated but even so he's a damn good player. It's hard to not get giddy when thinking of him on our defense.

Maybe I'm just a sucker for elite safeties, but I think the 16M or whatever Adams requires is more than worth it. I think he's the second best safety in the game, and with Derwin James's injuries, Adams might be the #1 safety I'd actually want.

Personally, I think Adams is similar to Troy Polamalu, with superior coverage ability. I'm incredibly high on him, and I'd probably pay Adams 16 million before I even thought about paying Myles the 20+ million he'll likely command.

Are we gonna pay him 16 million
Yes.

and Myles 22-25 million next year
Honestly? I don't think that's a wise investment. It would hurt so much to let a player like Garrett get away... but... I don't think edge pass rush translates directly to wins in the NFL in a way that makes paying a guy that much make sense. The backlash from fans that our front office would take would be enormous, but that's the kind of move the Patriots and other organizations who know how to effectively manage the salary cap would likely make.

I do. I don't think giving a RB his second contract is a wise decision. It's a position I'd rather fill with cheap young talent from the draft.

But again, I fully acknowledge that some people wouldn't share my roster philosophies, and letting any talent go from an organization that has been as bad as ours will not go over well.

It's just short-sighted to make this trade
It only would be if you didn't have a plan. If you had a long-term plan to build a defensive identity around your secondary, and you realize that money is better spent there than it is on the defensive line, this could be a steal.

Well, yes, the two picks would hurt. But I don't think there's any chance of drafting a player on the defensive side of the ball with the impact of Jamal Adams.

Wow, we're pretty far apart on him then. I don't think he's close to Polamalu in terms of talent. He's a rich man's Landon Collins to me.

I also see conflicting positions on his coverage ability with some advanced stats highlighting them to be strong and others showing him to be somewhat average.

I know this is anecdotal but I saw nothing mind-blowing from him the last 3 games we played the Jets (2017, 18, 19). 14 total tackles (6 assisted) and nothing else against us. Dude is crazy energetic and flies all over the field so he'd be good for us but he's not playing at a legendary level like Polamalu, though he has the potential to reach that.

We're definitely far apart.

You put me on draft day picking between Polamalu and Adams, and if you can guarantee me Adams will play for my organization the rest of his career the way Troy did for Pittsburgh, I'm taking Adams.

Brett Kollman did a good video of why the Jets need to just sack up and pay the man. You don't let talents like him get away.

Yikes.

Adams over Polamalu is just a bad take.
