2020 Buckeyes Football

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
They could simply look to other leagues who have done this successfully. Or, more broadly, other countries who have done well to mitigate and contain the virus, some of whom are now even allowing fans back at games.

I agree with your points re: Unionization. However, the smart and safe call is to cancel the season regardless of the other NCAA-related politics BS.

No league has done what the NCAA is attempting to do. And where would they look? An NBA-type bubble is not possible. The MLB looks bad and their season could very well collapse. The NFL hasn't started yet. And the leagues operating internationally have the supreme advantage of existing in countries that understood how to respond to the pandemic and don't deal with our daily catastrophic numbers.

There's just too many variables IMO. The pandemic is going far too poorly here and it just seems like needless risk for kids who aren't even getting paid.

What’s wrong with leaving it up to the players to take the risk? They are all over 18 and adults. If they don’t feel safe they can opt out to play. I don’t get why a person in the Ivery Tower is telling them they can’t play.

Because college football players aren't public health experts? These are world class athletes, of course they want to compete, not the point.

That moron Dan Plesac is 25 years old. We are talking about single college kids. That's why.

One of those weird things where you're not viewed as mature enough to make a proper decision; yet old enough to die defending your country.

Don't get me wrong, I don't think they should be playing, just pointing out the strange lines we draw.

Are they really doing it because they care about the players health? I think it comes from them not wanting to deal with backlash and perception that sports are ok and not school. It’s safe for us to go to bars and restaurants and work, but it’s not safe for world class athletics who have a protocol to keep them safe. It Is probably safer to play football and be in their own little bubble then just being at home.

The most dangerous thing about playing football during a pandemic is the game of football. It’s an incredibly violent game that can cause brain damage, paralysis, and even death. These presidents have their reasons for wanting to cancel the season, but I think people are fooling themselves if they think it’s because they’re concerned about the players’ health.

I've said this other places but I think universities are baiting the whole student body to sign up for classes so they can keep enrollment up and no get a bunch of kids taking a gap year. I bet they are advertising classes as more in person than they actually are. A lot of hybrid classes will switch over to virtual and completely in person classes will switch to hybrid or virtual.

I think for the MAC and mountain west they are trying to just keep their campuses open as long as they can. Alot of those schools are in college towns that are purely there for the universities. Having outside fans come into their towns each week will seed or spread the virus even more. I think that was the reason they closed. It makes sense to me why some Big 10 schools want to close because they are in only slightly bigger college towns.

This is all about liability:

No one is going to want to explain this is parents and the public if one of these guys drop dead after contracting Corona.
So much stupid discussion around how this is being portrayed as a binary disease (i.e. you die or you live and you have situations where you survive Corona and then you either have a shitty heart or die from heart failure while playing with myocarditis)

Delay it to the spring is the right thing to do (virus should be available by the end of the year and likely better therapeutics such as monoclonal ABs)
Also screw these college football coaches: so many of these Trump loving fools now want to advocate for football now while the rest of the industrialized world can have sports

I don't think they are making decisions strictly based on players' health, and I doubt many people assume that. In fact, as discussed, even a "player's health" decision is likely more about liability and optics than the actual health of the players. But the motivations of the league are less important than their actions right now.

Going forward with a season is a bad idea from a public health perspective, and this goes beyond the players.

You have players at risk. Then all the staff. Then everyone they are in contact with. Plus raising the potential for game day gatherings that could spread the virus further in the general population. We're in a pandemic that isn't being managed, I don't have any reason to believe a college football season would work out.

Do you think a college athlete is safer from Coivd playing football or not? I tend to think he is at more risk once the structure is gone. They all have a mission to win and be part of a group. I think taking that away would cause more harm.

I agree with your sentiment and one wonder about the future of football (I know of several moms who just flat out said no to their playing football due to the CTE risks. The issue though is what is societally acceptable risk. Ever see the racing movie Rush? They had a great line by Niki Lauda where he'll take the 5% risk of dying each season but no more. Similar situation

This is exactly why the MAC and Mountain West shut down their fall sports. They want to try to contain the bubble of their college towns. A lot of those towns are built only to support the university. Their hospital systems aren't built for a pandemic outbreak. Football just gives a reason for non-students fans to come to their towns. Even if they don't have fans in attendance at games, they could fill bars, restaurants, or have parties, which endangers the whole college town.

I don’t think a season would work out either. You’ve got 100 players on a team, all the coaches, training staff, etc. Then you’ve got the thousands of students returning to campus who will also spread the virus. It’d only work if you did a bubble like the NBA, and that’s not feasible for a number of reasons. I just hate that it’s not going to work because there’s nothing better than football and fall.

I think they are safer but I think the universities as a whole aren't if football is being played and they either have fans or don't have the state/local government to enact rules to discourage fans from coming in to town for game day.

Basically I think schools will have push back the season and work with the state and local government to enact game day restrictions so no fans come into town. It might be shutting down bars during the game. Reduce gathering sizes in the town. Shut down all tailgating spots. No Airbnb rentals during home games. All those on top of no fans in the stadium.
