2019 Draft, Pick #30 - Kevin Porter Jr., USC

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I think we should be careful about the expectations we put on KPJ. This reminds me all too much of what we did with Cedi after Bron left.

Sure, KPJ showed flashes this year, but ultimately he was bad just like most rookies. I think we should all just be happy if he turns into a good rotation player, and ecstatic if he can be a regular starter on a good team.

Just a reminder of where we were with Cedi less than two years ago:

"With proper playing time, what does Gordon Hayward have in his skill set that Cedi doesn't?"

"there is no difference between the impact of jalen brown and him"

"I have a feeling he’s gonna grab 5-10 triple doubles this season."

"This kid is gonna be so good. If we just had a superstar to pair with him and Love."

"To think we were a year away from having a Lebron, Love, Irving, Cedi foursome. Sigh"

I think Cedi has turned into a fine player and was a good find by our front office. It's a shame that some unrealistic expectations from the start have led to a dip in his approval by fans. I just don't want to see the same thing happen to KPJ.

I still think Cedi can be really good, but he didn't turn out to be the defender we thought. He has a hard time with stronger guys, and was actually better defensively playing the 2.

He is shooting the 3 better than anyone on the team.

Cedi's development has been hampered by coaching IMO. Looked better with Lue and Bickerstaff than with Drew and Beilein. His ballhandling and passing just haven't been fostered by the development staff. They tried to make him play like a 3 and D.

That said, yeah it is easy to get too high on these guys.

I 100% think KPJ has a better career than Barrett though. Don't see it with Barrett at all. I know he is young, but his rebounding is his only elite skill IMO.

The reality is most drafts do not have a generational talent. Hell, most drafts don’t have anybody who will ever be top-ten in the league.

I feel very similarly about KPJ as I did about Sexton after his first year. Does he look like a future superstar or top-10 player? No. Does he look like a guy that could make an all-star game or two? It’s unlikely, but I can see the pathway. But, to me, he’s flashed enough talent consistently that I do believe he’ll be in the NBA for a long-time.

I just want to enjoy and be surprised at our young guys’ growth. Even if none of them ever be a part of a future Cavs’ playoff team, I’m okay with that, as long as they entertain us through their growth. KPJ should deliver that in spades.

Latest episode of road trippin has Bickerstaff. He gushes at one point saying KPJ has the potential to be one of the best 2 way players in the league.

Sure hope so!

That would really make the rebuild easier.

Shit, if he became a good 3-and-D guy with noted defense, a true stater for a god team, he'd be exceeding expectations for his draft slot.

He’s gotta be at least 6’6 now, seriously looks like he’s grown a bit. His shooting mechanics also look pretty good now.

Getting his shot up quickly. Nice

Love his shot release. He was 40.7% from 3pt last season when catch and shoot. I have high hopes from him but I also would like to see him as a cutter more. I remember there was a stat that he was 93 percentile as a cutter meaning that he was very efficient as a cutter getting the basket or got fouled. I believe the team is working to get him in those positions and they are going to work in that during mini camp.

Yeah I saw a stat and it showed him being excellent at the rim. They gotta really work that into his game.

I think he finished 70% at the rim or close to it. At USC he would spend time in the dunkers spot.
