Baker Mayfield: Fire The Cannons

Do Not Sell My Personal Information

So I’m watching the yinzers and they’re talking about red zone efficiency and it got me to thinking... remember when Mayfield was like the highest rated QB in the red zone his rookie year? It’s just hard for me to believe a player can be that good in the hardest part of the field to be that good and just... loses it. It’s gotta be there somewhere

Gotta be able to get into the redzone to have redzone chances? Anytime they have momentum something comes along and disrupts it. Penalties, turnovers, bad playcalling, horrible roads or throws.

I hope we see him turn it around b/c there was something there. It's gotta be on baker at some point, right?

Baker should be better than he is showing. So here is an idea, probably a bad one. (But ya know what, its can't get much worse.) Have Stephanski give Baker 2 plays to call and let Baker audible if he doesn't like the primary call. I know nobody has any confidence in Baker right now. Let Baker decide his own fate. Seriously could we do any worse? And if its awful, Baker sealed his own fate, and we move on.

Remember when Baker was talking shit about The Giants drafting Daniel Jones? I like Baker better before Odell stole all his talent.

The coaching situation has not helped at all. Hue Jackson, Greg Williams, Freddie Kitchens...

I'm confident Larry, Curly, and Moe would have been just as good for the development of a young quarterback.

Kevin has a tall task ahead of him but Baker has to meet him halfway. I see too many things Baker just can't do if he wants to last and actually be good at this level.

And people want it both ways with the coaching. On one hand Baker is not where he should be because of coaching changes and the systems and on the other hand people want to tout how well he played in a season where he had 2 Head Coaches and 2 coordinators.

So coaching has been a problem except for when he played well though a mid season coaching change?

The offensive terminology didn't change. He had an entire offseason to learn it, and when we promoted Kitchens to replace Haley, it didn't change.

The next year with Kitchens was a disaster.

This year is all COVID-fucked, and you're panicking after one game.

It sucks, but our only option is to be patient. Putting a QB like Keenum in doesn't do anything for us.

Like, it's entirely possible that Baker shits the bed and can't be saved. But, if that's the case, then let's keep him at the helm and get the highest pick possible to find his replacement.

Why are you calling for Keenum except for the typical Los reaction?

Baker in his rookie year looked like the next big time QB, he's somehow got to get back to being that dude. He used to play with energy and fire and he was having fun! The great Qb's take what the defense gives you and so far Baker hasn't done that. So far he's been trying to force the sexy 15-20 yd passes instead of the easy 4-5 yd check downs.

Honestly, I wonder how much of that fun from his rookie year had to do with playing with very low expectations. This team has been under a magnifying glass ever since they traded for OBJ, and it’s not changing any time soon.

Do we really believe his problems are more “mental” and intangible like “not having fun?” Serious question.
