2020 Offseason

Do Not Sell My Personal Information

What an unfair article by the author. To compare Garland to Herro is ridiculous...Garland haven't played basketball for a year and he was expected to start immediately. On top of that, the Heat has more stability at the coaching position.

Man, that was a brutal article. One thing the author is correct about, Garland did have the single worst win share total in the draft, and apparently in the NBA (-1.3). Now, I am reluctant to place much meaning on that after only 59 games, but it sure isn't a good thing.

The other consideration is that the Cavs as a team only won 19 games, which wasn't Garland's fault. That's going to make everyone's win share total look bad.

In order, the win share leaders from that draft that the Cavs could have taken before Garland are in order: Brandon Clarke, Jaxson Hayes, Cameron Johnson, Matisse Thybulle, Eric Paschall, PJ Washington, Daniel Gafford, Rui Hachimura, then Tyler Herro.

All things considered, the Cavs need to take Killian Hayes or Tyrese Halliburton in this year's draft, whomever is still available.

I believe Hayes has refused to meet with the Cavs, has made it clear he doesn't want to play here, and that the Cavs have essentially removed him from consideration.

On the plus side, there's a good chance Halliburton is available at 5 anyway.

Halburton is the only guard I am even slightly considering. I think he is going to be a top 5 player from this draft. I prefer Okoro at our spot, but if we didn't have Darius I would probably want Haliburton. He just has that super high IQ. He is going to be good and better than some of the "high upside" guys. I think he is going to be better than Edwards without question.

The thing I'm looking to see is the second half adjustments. For,the last 4 or 5 years the team always sleep walk in the third quarter. They'll either come back during the second quarter or have a huge lead and when the third comes everyone starts giving up way too many easy points and we have to scratch and claw our back or outright get blown out in the second half.

This been an issue since the year we won the title....

Something I have seen from JB that I think is encouraging. He probably only finished half of the games he coached with the starters. He left guys out there if they were playing well or switched lineups to create mismatches. I can't really remember a Cavs coach who did that. Lue would ride the hot hand sometime.

Felt like JB in just a few games used time outs appropriately and would switch a lineup that was getting killed.

I want to feel very optimistic about this season especially how the team played under JB and I feel this team can atleast compete for a playoff spot. We don't have to be in the playoffs next season(even though I want them to be there) but atleast let everyone know we're going to play very hard every nite and that it's not going to be an easy win.

I believe this team can go to the playoffs next season or in 2021-2022 season,if they draft well.I'm tired of people saying the Cavs is nothing without Lebron James.

Yeah I think it will be tough to get to the playoffs. With brooklyn being better and people underestimating Orlando, it seems easier than it really is because Indy, Bucks, Celts, Raps, Miami, Brooklyn, Philly are all virtual locks barring catastrophic injury. Is Philly the worst of the top 7? I mean I think there is one spot that might be possible.

I think you are right that the goal should be teams being annoyed at how hard the Cavs play, and stealing games from good teams sometimes. Be that late lottery team that jumps into the top 4 if you are lucky an try to build winning habits so guys can learn to win game. I will say, I think the young guys came a long way during the season as far as playing the right way in close games and they won some of them. Build on that.

I have no confidence in the Cavs to draft well.
Why?

Sexton is a good pick. While they could have taken the injury risk on MPJ or the “will he he play here” risk on SGA, Sexton is a legit player. Thankfully they didn’t take Knox, Jerome Robinson, or Miles Bridges

KPJ did not just appear on their roster. They targeted and traded for him to DRAFT him.

And frankly, giving up on Garland or Windler already is a bit premature imo considering the circumstances.

I get the Kyrie trade hate and last LeBron year hate for Cavs FO and Koby.

But for the past 18 months, I think both their drafting, development, and low risk extensions(Nance/Cedi) have been solid

Not saying they deserve supreme confidence, but I don’t get having zero confidence in their drafting based off the past two drafts and seasons

I agree with all that. I was just very frustrated by the Garland pick because it seemed a very coach/system driven pick, and I hate that. It's the same thing that got us Dion Waiters. The coach has a vision for how a dual-combo guard backcourt would be perfect for his particular system, and would give us a "system" advantage over other teams. I think I eventually banned myself from the post-draft Garland thread because I was becoming the proverbial turd in the punchbowl in terms of the Cavs having drafted him.

All of which is saying -- in a very roundabout way -- that blaming Garland on Beilein is my way of trying to defend Berry.

Garland might become better this year. He could play better last year, too. But the team didn't have a leader. It didn't have any direction. The rookie coach couldn't lead. The under-performing veterans were more whiners than leaders. The younger players were like avoiding eye-contact with the reality. And it didn't help putting Garland next to Sexton in the backcourt.
Winning solves a lot of problems. Getting behind a leader/hero solves a lot of problem. Unfortunately, both were missing.

I believe JB can bring a sense of direction. We have a bunch of flawed players - and JB needs to do a balance act quite like Brad Stevens had achieved when IT2 was in Boston.

The draft is somewhat important. I believe we should draft someone more based on his skills, and less because how "freakishly athletic" he is. I wouldn't mind drafting another PG (Hayes/ Haliburton/ Ball). Or it could be Vassell/ Okoro/ Avdija/ Toppin. I wouldn't mind trading down and taking a gamble on Pokusevski. The bottom line is, the coach has to have a vision about the team, and the rookie must fit well in that.

I get all the concern about Garland, both as a fit and as a player. With the nature of the season and the nature of his cut short college year, I am all aboard on giving him this full second season before making an initial read on him as a player. But I understand why some people already feel like regardless of talent, he’s a non fit with Colin. Don’t fully agree yet, but understand. But if you do have that negative view on Garland already, it’s only fair that that would also affect your assessment of Koby over the last two drafts and offseasons.

I understand people being underwhelmed by Garland but he should be given more time, I still think he has one of the highest ceilings on the team. For comparative sake, his first two seasons Jamal Murray: 13.3 pts 2.7 asts 43.2 FG% 35.9 3P%. Garlands shot and form are too good not to translate.
