The 2020 Cleveland Indians

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
furthermore the sport desperately needs a salary cap and revenue sharing. The sport is just completely and totally lopsided when it comes to salaries and it destroys the competitiveness. Last season 7 teams were below 100 million salary, mean while 5 were at or above 200 million. Thats a ridiculous gap.

My guess is we end up losing a full season of baseball while they figure it all out
look, i'm a cleveland fan so i'm all in favor of a salary cap - but I dont think MLB really cares about the 5 teams that arent in the biggest 25 metro areas in the country - pittsburgh, kc, cincy, cleveland, milwaukee - what does mlb lose if they all disappear or move to bigger markets where they can compete better? they arent national draws, they mean little from an entertainment or ratings stand point - things change, demogrpahics change, why should we - mlb - ignore that and prop them up? we can do fine without them
-
re the indians organizaton - since dick jacobs bought the team in 86?, hired hank peters in 87? who hired john hart, who hired mark shapiro, et. al., i would maintain that the indians probably have had the strongest, most effective organization in the following 30 years! - and that's w/o qualification of market size, avaialable $s, etc. I'll let someone else do it, but just add up w-l over that time and the indians will be right at the top - hope it continues

Such a shame what happened after that amazing 2007 season. 2008 Hafner begins all of his injuries and goes from arguably the best power hitter in all of baseball to an albatross of a contract. Same year we lose our rock in Westbrook for most of the year and all of 2009. In 2009 Sizemore, arguably the best position player in MLB, has his body give up on him and never really is the same player even in his limited stints.

Sprinkle on Marte and Aubrey, 2 top prospects, never panned out, looming free agents with CC, Lee, etc, and that window sure shut fast.

I just looked Sizemore up, he just turned 38 on August 2nd. What a shame.

5 teams? what are you talking about?

Half the league is below 130 million in total team salary, and a quarter of the league is below 100 million. This isnt the MLB not caring about "small market" franchises, this is the majority of their teams are below a number, that is still 40% off from the highest paid team. These lower salary teams are from cities like Phoenix, Dallas, Chicago, and San Diego all of which are in the top 10 most populated cities.

In the NBA the span from the lowest paid team to highest paid team is 20% (111 million to 136 million), in the NFL its 23% (175 to 227m), baseball its 400% (53 to 212m).

Its absolutely fucking absurd that there is no salary cap in baseball and without one the league is destined to continue to lose support like it already has.

Might not need a salary cap, to which the players will never agree, if owners agree to pool and equally share all local tv/radio/media revenues. Of course the owners would never agree to that, either.

I've always felt it is in MLB best interest to split all media equally among the teams, however there needs to be a mechanism so that some owners don't just keep the cash.

The Indians will make the playoffs because of the expanded playoff pool. But to think they are world series contenders is lunacy. While the pitching is strong, the hitting is not major league average. Tito might give a shot in the arm to the team when he returns. But he doesn't hit.
Take a good look at this team. Because the roster will be greatly different next season.
Our only hope would be if Dan Gilbert buys the team. But even that's not likely.
I would have to say even the pitching is starting to show some kinks in the armor. Remember we are still counting on a lot of pitchers who are still very early in their careers and we don't fully know what we have with a lot of them yet.

FWIW - Steve Cohen, richie rich investor has agreed to buy the Mets for 2.4 bil

If he keeps producing until he hits FA after the 2023 season
Except he will be 31 then. Not conducive to the massive 8-10 year deals. We need to take advantage of that and lock him up similar to what Milwaukee did with Yelich.
