Overview
A powerful post player who excels at rebounding the ball, defending the rim and scoring in the lane. Unpolished but with a lot of upside, Okongwu has an NBA frame and is on a trajectory to be a first round pick.

Strengths
  • A big, strong and athletic player who can really bang in the paint and hold his ground
  • An excellent shot blocker with good instincts and intelligent defensive play - knows how to avoid fouls and how to keep the ball in play when he blocks a shot
  • Does a good job of reading the flight of the ball and battling for offensive rebounds
  • Has decent shooting form and has shown steady improvement - projects as a solid mid range shooter who could develop 3 point range
  • Has good hands and catches the ball well
  • Runs the floor well and is an above average open court athlete
  • Knows his role and doesn't try to do too much - isn't afraid to do the dirty work
  • Is still growing and projects to have NBA center size
Weaknesses
  • Needs to improve his ball handling skills
  • Needs to improve his free throw shooting
  • Can he develop into a floor spacer?
Comparisons
  • Reminds of Tristan Thompson but with more offensive upside.
  • A more bulky Bam Adebayo
Projection: first round pick in the 2020 or 2021 NBA Draft

I wouldn't mind him at all. He doesn't exactly fit, but is he Tristan's replacement and Drummond's replacement next year?

I like him plenty, he has the upside of a lottery pick. Lots of comparison's to Bam, but I think he is not going to be as good.

I'm not sure he is as big as they say. We will have to see the measurements

The more I read about him the more Ill still take him if his available....With that all said,he does need to improve his shooting range....

If there's no elite wing available then I'm definitely taking Okongwu, he is so athletic and fluid. His shooting form looks pretty good and i see no reason to think he can't be as good or better than Bam.

I didn't watch much college bb this year, but of the little I saw of Toppin and Okongwu, I like Okongwu better. Seems more fluid and explosive to me. Nice to see him getting some love. My immediate comp for him was TT, but I think he can be a better shooter with time.

He has a very good frame. He is big, but moves great. Touch is nice enough, you hope his range can be extended.

That smile remained during heated practices or workout sessions. Enfield loves telling tales of Okongwu in that setting, one that Cavaliers general manager Koby Altman witnessed in person multiple times this season -- the first time around November and then again in January while the Cavs were on a West Coast road trip.

Altman and staff had Okongwu on the radar early. But rookie Kevin Porter Jr., who spent one rocky season at USC and followed the California high school basketball scene while there, kept talking up Okongwu, raving about his exciting skill set. Altman even texted with Porter from one of USC’s practice sessions, hoping to compare notes.’

I wouldnt be mad if we drafted him but he's not in my top 5 wish list

Definitely a high floor but what about the ceiling? Is he the next Bam or the next Bismack Biyombo?

There are signs pointing towards the Cavs possibly picking a big, specifically Wiseman or Okongwu:

-Thompson being a free agent.
-Drummond entering the final year of his contract.
-Love’s age, injury history, & the likelihood of a trade, at some point.
-Nance learning to play the 3.
-KPJ hyping up Okongwu to Koby.

Plus this kid has a defensive element to his game which translates to helping out even if we retain guys. Much like other people on this thread, I wouldn't be mad. I actually like this pick over Obi. I would only take Obi if you feel you are not interested retaining some of the bigs you have. Obi's lack of defense scares the crap out of me for a team who is already horrifically bad at playing defense.

Yeah the Cavs do have a potential little pipeline to USC after picking KPJ last year. I think it's going to be Okongwu or Okoro at this point. (Okoro having the ties to Sexton). Both are athletic and would fit a big need defensively on this team.

I wouldn't mind,if the Cavs drafted Okongwu since he's my second choice....
