Baker Mayfield: Fire The Cannons

I do not think OBJ does not “fit or mesh” with Baker and vice versa.

I honestly believe it is a mental thing. OBJ is a polarizing figure and needs the ball. When he is on the feild, Baker feels the pressure to find him. Let us not forget — everyone and their mother says: “Baker will be nothing, unless he gets Odell involved...AND EARLY.

I firmly believe, once his mind was free with OBJ out — he threw to the open man...whoever it was. At the end of the day, Baker is a “distributor” type quarterback and may not need a true #1 reciever.

Said it in the game thread, but...

I really believe this offense is at its best when it runs the ball with its TWO elite running backs, and then spreads the ball around in the passing game.

Don't let Hollywood leave after this year if you plan on keeping Baker. Period.

There is no way a QB looks like total trash and then elite level. I am not saying Brady esque, but to me — he looked like 2018 Baker. He looked for a deep shot, if it was not there — went through his progressions and he checked it down, etc.

Who knows, he could look like total dog shit next week, but he looked straight-up surgical out there today. I am not either for or against Baker — I just want a competent QB. In all honesty, i believe he has the skill to be more than just a “game manager”.

I need to see him do it against a competent NFL defense.

But, he has justifiably shut up a lot of people around here - myself included - until next Sunday.

I hope to God he's the one. I'd love for the Browns to spend a high draft pick on a defensive player instead of trading up for the next franchise QB.
 
If only we had Trask behind center; according to some the posters from the draft thread, we would have put up 55 today and not had to sweat this one out. Until next year I guess ....

Not sure if it would have been possible for us to have played a better second half of football, at least offensively. Did we even have to punt?
 
I realize correlation does not equal causation, but Baker seems to be a better QB when OBJ is off the field than when he's on. I don't know that any of us are able to chalk it up to any one thing, but it seems without Beckham for the near future, we'll get an extended look at whether or not Baker will continue to play at a level commensurate with his draft position. I don't have anything against Beckham either, he's been nothing but a pro's pro since he's been here and I was stoked when we got him, but if not having him here elevates the level of our QB's play, and the Browns can get away from having to pay multiple years of WR1 money going forward, I'm completely fine with moving on from him for any kind of compensation.

I agree.

I just find incredibly odd that he went from his reads/mechanics looking so terrible, to just downright impressive. It HAD to have been mental. Baker in 2018 looked like he belonged — because he was accurate and smart. The accuracy was not just dink and dunk — he challenged people and hit NFL windows with precision.

I hope to God i am right, because if he plays badly next week — i am going to look like a total dick.

So Baker, if you read RealCavsFans, do NOT fuck this up.

When I think of 2018 Baker Mayfield, I think of this throw:


If he got back to this level of accuracy and confidence, there would never be another peep out of this forum about drafting his successor. The fact of the matter is that he's been largely mediocre since the beginning of last year.
 
Higgins never plays unless everyone is hurt but Baker obviously loves throwing to him.
Higgins shows up ,,Odell disappears and Baker starts playing like Drew Brees. Weird.
 
I'd be interesting in what Mayfield's QBR is when throwing just to Higgins.
