In general, I believe we as fans got a little too compartmentalized in the discussion of potential draft picks. Usually, this conversation only lasts two months or so, not nine plus months.

Some scout and draft site services preferred Deni, some preferred Okoro. They aren't that far apart as prospects. Their draft slots and the conversations our front office held also reveal that small gap.

A few posters were looking for reasons to tear Avdija down to build Okoro up, as well as vise versa. I don't think that is a take that ages well.

Avdija has some clear advantages - off ball offense and defense, height advantage, catch and shoot, playmaking. Okoro has some advantages - on ball defense, general better left hand, playmaking out of the P&R, shot off the bounce. It was a great situation that two small forwards were around the #5 area of the draft for the Cavs. They picked someone who clearly wants to be in Cleveland, can't be upset at that.

Let's see how it plays out, but I'd be careful about letting excitement over one prospect lead to bias against another.

Yes, totally on board with this.

But also, fuck you if you liked Deni. You are wrong and dumb. :)

Fair enough, one and done off the bench just reminds me too much of Dion, lol

Closer to Marvin Williams. Dion was actually a sophmore when we picked him at 4 and was at least Big East 6MOY for Cuse. Was also their top scoring threat even if he was coming off the bench. Williams was just a guy like Marvin Williams was his one year at UNC. I like Patrick Williams if we traded down. I see the upside but he's literally just upside and projection at this point much like Marvin Williams was back in the day.

First of all, I had Okongwu in the top tier of prospects, my #4. I have a lot of appreciation for a big man project on offense who is polished on defense and on the boards.

I also think Okongwu is going to be a rotational 25 minute per night player until he develops some offensive skill with the ball in his hands. He doesn't handle the ball, he doesn't pass, he offensive rebounds and puts it back. The Cavs could afford to let TT fill that role when they were losing a lot of games, and then he slowly put together a jumps shot. In Atlanta, he can develop slowly with Capella on the roster.

With Okoro, he fills a much bigger need. The Cavs are already deep with veterans at the center position, making playing time a barrier for such a raw offensive prospect. At swingman, it's truly wide open for Okoro to start early.

I personally preferred Okongwu since last winter but started to change my mind and switched to Okoro about a month ago. It just comes down to the fact that wings have so much more value in this league. A good (but not great) wing like Jaylen Brown is almost priceless in this league. Bigs don't seem to have nearly that type of value. A good defensive center like Capela was traded for a non lottery draft pick. Unless you believe that Okongwu is the next Bam (Okongwu does not have that level of ballhandling skill) then I would take the equivalent wing.

I think the eventual starting lineup will be:
Sexton-Okoro-KPJ-Love-Drummond

All five guys have previously shown the ability to be a playmaker. There is no true “point guard” in this lineup, but the passing and playmaking is good enough that I don’t think it will be a problem.
Garland
KPJ
Okoro
Love
Drummond
(Sexton as Sixth player)

OR (If KPJ continues to have off court issues..)

Garland
Sexton
Okoro
Love
Drummond

I'm not high on Okoro because of his poor shooting, he's bad from distance and also sometimes hesitant to let wide open looks fly, that concerns me. I think people that like him think he resembles somebody like Andre Iguadola.

Edit: I'm coming around on this guy, I think I'm a fan. The people saying he would be a good fit with Sexton, I think are correct, these two would be a pain to try to keep out of the lane. This dude is very strong and aggressive, competes hard, plays with a ton of effort, can probably defend 4 positions. The only red flag is his shooting, but his form doesn't look broken, if you can get him to 36% from 3 I think you would be very happy with that. Would be love to have him.

No after watching the film his form isn't broken but it's going to take HUNDREDS OF HOURS in the gym with Price to for him to work on his release. His shot problem is that he shoots with his arm instead of his wrist...thus the really bad misses you see him take.

I posed this question in S34 but will do it here......Deni / Okoro is a personal preference battle in my eye. It is one of those "what do you look for in a basketball player". There are arguments for both that have merits.

Where I really struggle with Okoro specifically is why you take him over someone like Okongwu? Okongwu seems like a higher success canidate, in addition to maintaining roster flexibility. We are now in a situation with our wings and guards where nearly all the guys need to be good for this to make any sense.

If we roll in to 2021, are we really investing in another guard or wing? After taking 2 guards in the top 8 and then 3 wings in two drafts? One in the top 5?

Okongwu would have paired nicely with Love and slotted in TT's role. He would have provided energy, defense and intangibles but he also would have given you more roster building options moving forward. In 2021, we would have had room for a 3/4/5, depending on your draft board. It seems that we now are only in the market for a 4/5 in 2021, in a draft that has insane wing talent but few interesting 4's or 5's.

Every night the Cavs get their stuff pushed in my some guy who is too big and too athletic at the wing position. Okoro allows us to be more competitive on that end. I also think there are plenty of talented bigs available in 2021 draft from a team building standpoint. The beautiful thing about this is that we’re gonna find out how these guys look in a month which is insane to think about. Outside of Edwards and Wisemen, these two were my favorites. I’m gonna be tuning in to some Hawks games as well.

If the Cavs would have drafted Deni, I wouldn't be upset..just as I am not upset with Okoro..I like Deni's height as a SF and ball handling skills. And he also plays defense.
So I'm ok with the pick.

Deni plays defense rofl. Do people make things up for prospects?

I was assuming either Garland or Sexton start at PG and KPJ starts at SG.

I also wonder whether Nance starts at SF just to allow for Nance, Love, and Drummond to all start.

Sexton - Porter - Nance - Love - Drummond

With Garland and Okoro 1st off the bench. Nance would ideally spend plenty of minutes at PF with Okoro, Windler, Osman, and even Porter at SF.
I think that Garland, Sexton, and Porter will split the two guard positions with each getting about 32 minutes.

On the front line I'm not sure how they break it down between Drummond, Love, Nance, Windler, and Okoro. I don't think Cedi will be in the rotation. This assumes Thompson won't be back.

Dre starts at the 5 and when he sits Love probably moves to the 5 with Nance at the 4. Okoro and Windler split the minutes at the 3 depending on who is playing better and whether there is a big scoring forward on the other team that needs to be guarded.

That's an 8-man rotation. I don't know if Bell, McKinnie, Osman, or Exum get any run.

Love will probably not play any back to backs to that will squeeze some minutes in for Bell or Dean Wade.

I think Cedi will still get minutes, especially to start the season. If that continues depends on how he plays, how quickly Windler comes on, if we do any of the Nance at SF lineups(I kind of doubt it if TT is gone) , and how many minutes do Okoro/KPJ play at SF vs SG
