Damyean Dotson Welcoming Committee

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Let me hype you all up for this, life long Knicks fan here and the Cavaliers just became my 2nd favorite team. I grew to love this kid so much that if he gets consistent rotation minutes I'll be watching every single Cavs game.

I'm not being sarcastic in any way when I say the Knicks handling of Damyean Dotson is the most unforgivable thing that horrific franchise has ever done in my opinion. He was BY FAR the most consistent player the Knicks have had in the past few years in terms of on court production, and yet he consistently got screwed over by the mess we had in the front office and the coaching staff.

Dotson is an absolute sniper from downtown. 36% looks solid, but I promise you that he's 40% + when given consistent rotation minutes. Will go into that later. He plays some of the most ferocious on ball perimeter defense I've ever seen in my life. When Fizdale/Miller took their head out of their asses briefly, the combination of Ntilikina and Dotsons on ball perimeter defense was truly mesmerizing. As a fan theres nothing more frustrating than giving an open 3. I give you my word he may miss a handful of rotations in the entire season. He's absolute lockdown out there. He can get bullied down low a bit, but he always works, and he's got some nice hops so he'll rip down the boards when he gets space. He's insanely fast. Like truly will make you say wow with how fast he can get up and down the court. There was a camp story about him and Dennis Smith Jr having a race and he beat him. He plays within himself, some times to a fault by not being aggressive enough, but he always moves the ball quickly, always cuts hard, always looks to make the right basketball play. He didn't have much of a dribbling game when I first saw him in summer camp as a rookie, but that skill set improved a lot over the last few years. He's got a pretty filthy step-back that he doesn't use often because he looks to pass TOO MUCH and you can visibly see him not wanting to be a ball hog, but his confidence in his 1 on 1 ability showed some serious promise towards the end of last season.

Now, you read all this and I know you think I'm a delusional fan because it sounds too good to be true. A player that does everything he's supposed to and can't crack a consistent rotation on a lowly Knicks team? It was 100% because of instability of leadership and politics.

He finished strong 2 years ago and then got shafted out of the rotation by RJ's drafting, old ass Wayne Ellington and their lottery pick Kevin Knox (who truly is one of the worst NBA players I've ever seen) who got forced minutes the entire season because they couldn't admit they were wrong. As Ellington and Knox shit the bed the first few months of the season, Dotson finally gets a chance to get a measly 18 minutes a game and my man shoots 45% from downtown in a 20 game sample in January/February. And all the great defense and hustle and team oriented playing style that I mentioned earlier. Then, inexplicably, with absolutely no explanation given, Miller benches him and he never saw meaningful minutes again. Why? Some info eventually got out that "promises" were made to Wayne Ellington before the season who had fallen completely out of the rotation (despite being a 3 Pt specialist who shot 32% from downtown up to that point). Miller, an iterm 1st time coach, caved and gave the veteran the minutes. Yes, a team that was one of the worst in the league from downtown that was causing spacing issues affecting the development of RJ and Randle, benched another young asset that was shooting 45% with his opportunity. Thats how poorly that franchise is run. They've got the right people in place now thank God, but the past few years were such a complete disaster and Dotson was the #1 casualty of that.

I would guess the new management didn't resign him because they had Alec Burks lined up, but our loss is your reward Cavs fans.

Enjoy the prize. You'll love this kid. He was a fan favorite in my Knicks forums.

But seriously how does he shoot those percentages with that shooting motion

Solid end of rotation guy, shoots better than Mckinnie

Really interesting stuff, thanks for sharing!

Now I want to see him and Okoro out there together on perimeter D.

What I saw was a ton of contested mid-range jump shots which is the last shot you want your team to take. That's what got Sexton into a lot of trouble before he got the message that everything is either a layup or a 3-pointer. But OTOH, DeMar DeRozan has made a pretty decent career out of that contested 15-footer, so if you can make a high percentage of them....

I have to believe that tenacious perimeter defense is what attracted the Cavs, just like with Okoro. If he's holding opposing shooters to 38% he'll be our best defender right from Day 1 and it won't be close. Still, on a team with Sexton, Garland, Porter, Dellavedova, and Exum how many minutes is he going to get?

I like the fact that he had a positive +/- on one of the worst teams in basketball. His numbers suggest he's a better rebounder than most shooting guards. So...defense, rebounding, 3-point shooting - not a bad skill set.

On the highlight video I did notice that he was jacking up contested shots with an open teammate standing at the 3-point line. Maybe the shot clock was expiring in some cases. He seems like a good guy to have on the court with the shot clock expiring because he has a high arching shot that he can get off even with a bigger defender in his face and it doesn't appear to phase him - he keeps his form and the shot goes down. KPJ is another guy you can go to with three seconds on the clock and let him make a move and score one-on-one.

I'm wondering how explosive his first step is and how he finishes at the rim. This might be the first NBA highlight film I've seen without a single dunk. But there's nothing wrong with shouldering your way to the rim and creating enough separation to spin it in off the glass. You get two points just the same as a dunk.

There was one play where he was one-on-one against Cedi Osman, who we know is one of the worst defenders in the league. Dotson drove right but Cedi stayed with him and was right there to contest the layup, which Dotson made by banking it high off the glass. It was a really tough shot. But I wasn't impressed that he didn't have the burst to blow by a 6'8" slow European guy.

Anyway, good to hear he's unselfish offensively, is a good 3-point shooter, and plays mad dog defense. I can see why the Cavs pursued him but why would a guy looking for more minutes sign with a team that has three talented young guards who they are committed to developing?

I'll say this - with the addition of Okoro and Dotson plus Delly coming back there is going to be some very tough defense being played on the perimeter at Cavs' practices. These guys will make Sexton, Garland, and Porter really have to work for their buckets and push them to a higher level offensively. I read that Delly frustrated Kyrie at practices because he played him so tough defensively. The competition for playing time is going to be cutthroat. It will force everybody to up their games.

It also provides the Cavs some insurance if Porter goes off the rails. In fact, this signing might in part be a message; better stay between the lines because if you screw up we have somebody ready to step in.

It will also give JBB the option of using Dotson in the final minute when the Cavs need a stop and a rebound coming out of a time out. Once they get the stop they'll also have a solid 3-point shooter on the floor.

It will be interesting to see how many minutes he can force JBB to give him given the committment to the three young guards they already have.

Between Okoro, Dotson, and McGee the Cavs just added the two things they needed most; perimeter defense and rim protection. Like JBB said, it's a perimeter league. Only four out of 30 teams have a center or power forward who is their leading scorer. You need guys who can defend wings.

Man, I am really getting excited to see our Cavs play again. I coached H. S. Basketball for 4 years, and this is how I felt two weeks before practices started. I AM PUMPED to see Cavs Basketball.

From, what I could see alot of Knicks fans wanted them to keep him and plus they said he never got a fair shot.....

:dunno: :dunno: :dunno: :dunno: :dunno:
I wouldn't trust Knick fan as far as I can throw Stephen A Smith..AKA Kermit the Frog...

I recall watching a few Knicks games and thinking this guy was decent, definitely not afraid to put shots up. Seems like a solid addition to me. I’m curious why the Knicks didn’t want to keep him around...

From what I understand once they drafted RJ Barrett it was pretty much over for him...

His shooting percentages the last two years were 41.5 and 41.4. He misses a lot of shots. His true shooting percentage of 52.7% wasn't bad.

That suggests he takes a lot of shitty midrange shots. The next time he or Sexton does that, we need an JB to step in and do what must be done.

I see some Clarkson to his game, for the good and bad of that all. Meaning, he seems to be able to hit contested shots fairly well and he also seems to at times take some bad one's.

There are a lot of things to like his game though as an end of the rotation guy or if injuries occur. He has some talent and needs to find a way to consistently be on the floor. Are we the team for that? Well If KPJ flames out, we might be.

It's the rape stuff.

Really?

There were allegations and he was never charged. Doesn't really seem necessary to bring up if there's no charges and the case has been completely dismissed.

You wanna talk about the Duke Lacrosse team too?
