2020 Offseason

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I personally preferred Thon to Giles because Thon is a better shot blocker and has more range offensively. Fits todays game better then Giles imo. Would have been happy with either though. Glad we got Thon until we find out hes part of final cuts.
If the final roster spot comes down to Thon Maker or Dean Wade, I hope the Cavs keep Maker. He’s a year younger than Wade and he’s longer. He also has 4 years NBA experience versus 1 for Wade.

I'd cut Maker
Maker will have to earn a spot, don’t get me wrong, but I’m curious why you would opt for the 24 year old former undrafted free agent over the 23 year old former top 10 draft pick?

I hope they both earn a spot (meaning they both are atleast bench guys).... Javalle, Drummond and KLove might not be here next year, extra bigs (youngish and cheap) would not be bad....

They can both be on the roster You Can carry 15 players two way player do not count

Drummond and or McGee might be gone at the trade deadline. Need a big guy for long term depth.

Everything I have seen trold me Wade is a high IQ guy that could play a poor man's Kevin Love type of role. Everything I have seen from Maker tells me he probably isn't an nba player.

When I have seen Wade he is in the right spot defensively and moves to the open area. Maker gets in his teammates way and forces action.

I dunno I'd love to see who hits more, lottery picks that go through 3 teams or undrafted gleague guys that stick with a team. I'd guess the latter.

I get your point, if Maker figure it out he is a really good player, but if Wade figures it out he is a role player. Wade played well enough to get an nba contract from his gleague play. Thon got traded to a bottom dweller and then got cut.

One is making the most of his talent in one year, the other hasn't developed in 4 years.

I let someone else argue about who is older. I'd say Wade has been more successful in a shorter period of time.

I'm not sure if you're aware of the history with Thon but a number of NBA scouts/teams believed Thon could very well be 3-4 years older than what he is officially listed at.

We will likely never know for sure its not just a personal joke against Thon.

As for Maker, the player, he's worth a flier and I'm happy we took a shot with this signing.

Think the question is do you keep roster spot open for a for a potential Drummond trade? You could expect to get a vet, young prospect and picks. If the cavs expect to trade Drummond I could see them keeping Maker and converting Wade to a 2 way contract and releasing one of the current 2 ways(may be ending up in Canton ).

You can't expect anything in a Drummond return honestly. Pistons dumped him for a 2nd round pick. No guarantee his value has changed that much. He may have more value as a giant expiring then a player. Until he accepts that he's a role player and not a star he's nothing more then a glorified stat padder and clearly that's how the league views him.

yes you expect someone in exchange for drummond as drummond's value is an expiring contract, which means taking in another player with a bad contract as a salary dump.

He was suggesting a young player and picks. Drummond isn't netting multiple pieces. He has almost no value around the league currently. By eating a contract with his expiring we may get a young talent or a late first. He's not netting a huge return.

Some of the reason they kept the 15th roster spot open in the last couple seasons was because they were close to the luxury tax and didn't want to waste even that small cap hit on a 15th roster spot player. That really not an issue this year and if they cut that player later that cap hit shouldn't affect any flexibility in terms of trades.

I expect they will use that 15th roster spot this year and just cut that player if they need the roster spot for a trade when that day comes.
