What they're saying about Larry Nance Jr

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Don't start Nance at the 3. Start him at the 4 and bring Love off the bench. That would improve both the starting line-up and the bench.

Starters:

Sexton
Porter
Okoro
Nance
Drummond

Bench:

Garland
Windler
Osman
Love
McGee

You've got 4 of the 5 best 3 point shooters on the bench. At a minimum, you need Love starting to help spacing for the starting lineup.

And I doubt Okoro begins the season starting. You don't just hand the job to a rookie who hasn't played ball for 9 months.

Offensively it makes us lack drive and kick and close out attacking wings on the weakside. Larry can shoot from range now but hes not a threat to drive from the perimeter Defensively it provides a mismatch that is easy to attack with a simple pick and roll.

Larry has posterized numerous guys even dating back to his rookie season drives even going back to his rookie season!

And his handles have improved massively since then. His shooting stoke has also become more refined. If we do go back to some of that 'Large Lineup' look for Larry to handle the ball and push pace if he's the defensive rebounder. Utilizes Sextons speed and ability to reach the rim in fastbreak scenarios.

Can also readily see Larry streaking out a la LeBron for KLove outlet passes that span the entire court on some plays. Now we must limit Andre thinking he's a PG or ball handler as he simply doesn't make Jokic like decisions when he has the rock in hand.

But this unit is mostly effective due to the defensive pressure we are able to exert through pure length, height, and rebounding posistioning. Really intrigued to see where this set of players can reach this season. Hope that they remained refined IN THEIR ROLES and be an effective unit well into the future for the franchise.

I see Javale as a really solid piece as well, at bare minimum he keeps Andre Drummond honest about playing to his abilities as a big man. We have a frontline that I haven't seens be as stout as since we had Shaq, Z, Varejao & Big Ben by my estimation. Looking forward to them masking some of the flaws of the small backcourt this year.

Yes, but I've got the 4 best defenders starting...KPJ, Okoro, Nance and Drummond.

The Cavs handed out starting spots to Sexton and Garland...why not Okoro?

They probably won't make the playoffs anyway, so why not spend the season developing Okoro and improving the D?

I don’t know about that starting line up! Not a shooter in the bunch. That lineup could lead to deep holes to dig out of by the end of the 1st quarter.

Because they started last year, Okoro is a rookie, and there's competition for that starting SF spot. If only for culture reasons, you don't announce before TC has really even begun that a rookie is going to start. Now maybe if he outplays everyone else during this very short camp, then he does get the start

They probably won't make the playoffs anyway, so why not spend the season developing Okoro and improving the D?

Developing Okoro and improving the D over the course of the season doesn't require that he be the Day 1 starter. And we also want to develop a proper offensive flow, and that means having enough shooting in the starting lineup.

I hear you on the lack of shooters in my starting lineup. But which of those guys that I have coming off the bench are must starters?...Love? Maybe. But, that means Nance is back to coming off the bench, and the whole point of this thread is what to do with Nance. I say start him at the 4.

I think the real problem is that there's a lack of 2 way players on the roster. Everyone on the roster is either an offense or defensive player, with the possible exception of Nance and maybe KPJ. Okoro could develop into a 2 way player also. And if you notice, I have Nance, KPJ and Okoro in my starting line-up.

Drummond is trying to develop into a 2 way player, and he's getting relentless sh*t for it.

That was my problem with taking Okoro with the 5th because he is essentially a one way player (defense)! He can do a little scoring but his jump shot is sketchy at best! With the 5th pick you need to draft a “complete” player!

What about the 4 guys taken ahead of him? None of them were complete players.

Also, check out the videos of training camp. He is shooting well and Windler says his shot is better than advertised. Larry Nance said he is glad other teams thought he was a bad shooter and his issues are overblown and just need reps.

People are underestimating Okoro's ability to shoot the ball..This is the same thing people said about Sexton two years ago and we know how that turned out.

Always opt for the BPA or overall lowest floor & highest ceiling guys in the Lottery is my preference of strategy.

If you cannot turn a otherworldly athlete into a solid starter, that's nearly as much on the organization, scouts, and coaching/developmental staff as it is the player in many scenarios.

Okoro is an athletic monster with a floor as an exceptional defender. For us Ohio State fans a comp could be how David Lighty was always contributing to deep runs in March come tournament time.

This type of player simply wins. Larry is the same way. Always scraps on defense no matter if it's a wing or big that's his matchup. And his offensive game has improved to about league average at PF and a touch below league average as a SF in my estimation. And his 3 ball is improving seemingly with each passing month. Dude is a workhorse.

And I doubt Okoro begins the season starting. You don't just hand the job to a rookie who hasn't played ball for 9 months.

But we gave the starting job to Garland last year, who hadn't played in 11 months, and that went exactly according to plan.

Oh wait...

You’re telling me that Edwards, Wiesman, Ball and Williams aren’t complete players and aren’t effective on both sides of the ball? Is that way none of the teams ahead of us took Okoro with one of the top four picks?

Complete players in college are pretty rare obvious#1 picks. Lamelo was supposed to be that, and then wasn't.

All draft picks are potential.

Haliburton was probably the only all around guy and he went late lottery.

Do you mean elite talent?

There was a time when a top five pick was considered elite but because kids only stay in college 1-2 years now there really isn’t many “elite” players anymore. “Complete” to me is a player who can shoot effectively, able to create his own shot, rebound, handle the ball, pass effectively, play defense and run the floor. That, to me, is what a top five player should be able to do. Maybe I didn’t see enough of Okoro this year but what I did see was only three of those things (rebound, play D and run the floor)
