Beer snob thread!

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I still need to get my hands on barrel-aged Abraxas. It's the first beer that kicks every year at Snallygaster, and that's the only place I've seen it.

It's gotten worse in the recent few years. Wasn't a huge fan myself, but I'm not a chili-in-my-beer guy. The good news is that it is cheaper to get now (~125). I've been told by friends in STL that BA Ambiente from Shared (Side Project's side project) is the beer to try if you want to get a feel for what BA Abraxas was at one point.

Nice! My wife & I bought a house in Chagrin about 6 years ago. I try to make it up to Pecker on canning days, but it's been hard to get free time. We have a 13-month old who has been there a few times, but it's harder to do now that he won't sit still (this is another reason I've been away from RCF).

Thank goodness the Cavs are back to give me some entertainment more than once per week.

I feel you on that, I’ve got a 2.5 year old and a 6 month old at home now. The online ordering and pickup throughout the week (while sucking for CP themselves because they’re losing out on tap sales) is great for those of us who can’t always get out on canning Thursdays.

Where are you located? Not that it matters now, but there's a bar (also now a brewery) called Small City Taphouse in Sandusky, Ohio. They had BA Abraxas on tap back in November. They had Maman a few years ago but I missed it. Their owner, Kha, has some connections with Perennial, along with some other breweries, and is able to get some really cool shit on tap that Ohio would otherwise not see. We also just started seeing bottles of regular Abraxas, Coffee Abraxas, and Vanilla Abraxas locally. It was very limited, about a case per bottle shop, but still cool to see.

I'm with you. The thing about Abraxas that helps is that the cinnamon takes away from the chili. Otherwise, I really hate spicy beers. Especially IPAs.

I'm in Broadview Heights now. I've seen Abraxas around plenty--even on tap. I just haven't seen BA Abraxas. Thanks for the heads up. I've never heard of that place before.

I'm excited for kegs to start coming back in stock post-COVID. The selection this year sucked. I typically splurge on one of my two taps over the winter. Last year it was Crooked Stave Nightmare on Brett. This year I couldn't really get anything.

You won't see BA Abraxas in Ohio, I don't think. Unless it's at Small City like TL1287 said. That is usually only a member beer.

I do recall Kha having Maman on tap & one year for his birthday, they were giving a bottle of BA Abraxas out to the person who was first in line for the party. I almost spent the night on the street in Sandusky to get it.

So, I just made sure to star Small City on Google Maps for the next time I'm in Sandusky... and I noticed Zinc Brasserie right next door.

Is that the same Zinc that used to be in Cleveland? It sure looks like it from the menu... I loved that place. No better spot to park for free, enjoy some beer and moules frites on the patio, then head over to a Cavs/Indians game.

Not sure how much of an NEIPA fan you are but I saw Hoof Hearted in Columbus is now selling kegs of their IPAs direct to consumer.

Not sure on the Zinc place but Small City is fantastic. Even when they dont have their big blowout weekends with rare stuff like BA Abraxas on tap. They have something like 80 taps and then the owner's brewery CLAG is right next door. Dude can make some really good IPAs and stouts.

Big. My two first loves are sours and stouts, but after that pretty much everything's game and IPA's are likely my third favorite category--all styles. I saw that--but I'm going dry until around July. They've been REALLY good at distributing for the past year or so. I usually see 4 cans of their stuff on shelves, and they're always changing up what it is. Nothing stale from them. It's the best craft distribution I've seen so far.

I'm not sure how to broach this topic without coming across like a dick, but bringing up Founders in the beer snob thread would be like bringing up this obscure basketball player Kevin Durant is in GenPop.

Founders is one of the largest breweries in the country. They're available practically anywhere that sells beer.

Their KBS used to be one of the most sought-after stouts, but to me it's fallen off just a little bit, while everyone else has gotten significantly better. I'll still have it or it's variants a few times a year. My favorite Founders is a mix--2/3rds Breakfast Stout, 1/3 Rubaeus.

Eh...we talk about cheap whiskey and other liquor all the time in the Sophisticated Drinking thread.

Good beer is good beer. Good whiskey is good whiskey. Price and availability is largely irrelevant.

I'm certainly not trying to limit the discussion. Talk about any beer. Shit, I drank an Old Style the other day because it's my buddy's favorite and it's been in the back of my fridge since God knows when. Part of my crusade to finish all the beer in the house.

The post I was responding to was more talking about Founders in terms of places to try that the other poster may not have heard of.

Again, wasn't sure how to broach the topic without coming across like a dick. Oh well.

If you guys are NEIPA fans be sure to check out Missing Mountain in Cuyahoga Falls sometime. They're always brewing some kind of hazy variation, but their tried and true Zwickle Trickle is excellent. HiHO is right down the street and their Bossy Lady IPA is delicious as well.

Slightly unrelated, but I'm so glad Conway's from GLBC is already available. Such a good beer. I have a suspicion that it is Christmas Ale without the holiday spices.

I do like Missing Mountain. For the area, they're nowhere near either Masthead or Crooked Pecker for me.

I really like HiHo's pizza. Not many better relaxing days during COVID than grabbing food and drink and hanging out in the park. HiHo, Asterisk, Butcher and Sprout... so many nice places right there. Plus Blue Door isn't too far away.

Blue Door and Catalina's in Columbus are two of the best breakfast places I've ever been to.

I've been meaning to check out Crooked Pecker. Do they have a go to style, or a specific beer that I should try to get from them?

Masthead is such a cool spot. I grabbed some of their Jalopeno IPA early on in quarantine and loved it. It would have been so easy to overdo a beer like that, but the spice and jalopeno flavor were perfectly subtle. Great pizza too.
