Ideas on how to make this team a WS competitor going forward

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Jacoby seems to be a streaky hitter. He has months below Mendoza line and months hitting .300+. Last season was a fast July hitting .400+ in 7 or 8 games. Then .217 in August before getting injured in Sept. So, he looked better last year just due to his hot start. We got too many players who can be good or busts. Let’s focus on our own and if we trade, trade for a starter with a bit more potential.

Seems like a logical take Pete. Where I differ from you here is that I think Jones brings an aspect of speed and power that cannot be provided by what we currently have. I think Mercado is excellent defensively, but much more limited with the bat than Jones. There is risk with Jones for sure, but I'd feel more confident with him and his abilities than our current CF options. I think Jones is somewhat of a late bloomer and it would be nice to see that happen in Cleveland.

On the BTV sight, somebody posted a trade that would send Moss and Plutko to Detroit for Jacoby Jones. I like Jones physicality and his 2020 performance was pretty damn good, but was it a mirage? He's a decent defensive CFer as well. I like him better than our current options if the 20 season is any indication. If it was a mirage then I'll pass. What do you folks think?

Another idea could be to sign CJ Cron if he can be had cheaply, and it looks like that is a real possibility. He'd be a good bench bat if he didn't win 1B duties outright. Worst case scenario is that he could spell Naylor/Bradley/Bauers against LHP. I'm not trying to block any young players if they are just as or more capable of helping this team win than someone like Cron. Thing is I don't see them carrying more than one of Naylor, Bradley, or Bauers so a RHH 1B could be of some use.

This could actually work:
1. Hernandez 2B
2. Gimenez SS
3. Ramirez 3B
4. Reyes DH
5. E. Rosario LF
6. Cron 1B
7. Naylor RF
8. Jones CF
9. Perez C

Bench- Luplow, A. Rosario, Hedges, and one of Mercado/Zimmer/Johnson

That lineup has a good combination of speed and power. Definitely one that could be fun to watch, and with this pitching staff could have us in the thick of things.
I think our current options can suck as much as Jacoby Jones and not cost us anything in a trade.

I would absolutely agree with that OBC. At the same time I don't think that our current options can have as much success either.

How low we have sunk for anybody to wish for Jacoby Jones or to think that any...and I mean any...of our current options can not have as much success.

We need to get a grip.

ALL of our options have had better success overall hitting a baseball than Jones.

Jones career wRC+ over about 1100 plate appearances is 75.

How have our guys done by the same measurement?

Bauers in 800 PAs has an wRC+ of 88.
Mercado in 600 PAs....79
Naylor in 400...84
Luplow in 450....105

Oh....he is 29 yrs old and getting paid $2.7 mil this year. He's an expensive step backwards from what we have.

Adding more expensive AAAA talent to an already crowded group of AAAA outfielders might not be the answer.
