Pittsburgh has incredibly limited chance to get Watt in there under the salary cap. It's going to be very tough.

That said, why isn't there a Watt Safari thread up?

It's been almost 15 mins since this announcement was made.

To add to AZ's post, the steelers are currently OVER the cap, somewhere between 15-20 million. Even if Watt was going to take a HUGE pay cut (probably still worth 15-20 million a year), it would be incredibly difficult for the steelers to get him.

Ill be honest I would love him on the browns, but i think its a lot more likely they go try and make a splash in the secondary, than the defensive line.

Edit: the Steelers most likely cut Joe Haden, which will save them a ton in cap space (12 million), they probably dont resign Vance McDonald or they cut eric ebron (either option saves 5), and they probably cut Steve nelson (8 million saved). So that gets them under the cap by 5-10 million. However that also means they got rid of their 2 best CBs.

The only other options they really have to get under the cap enough to get Watt are; restructure Big Ben, cut DeCastro. But not sure Big Ben is willing to give up massive amounts of money, while the rest of the team is stripped down, just so the steelers can give Watt big money.

Even if that were to happen - who cares? Pittsburgh isn't exactly trending up. Pouncey retired this morning. Ben is another year older and looked washed last year. Still no running game. Retirement is knocking on Haden's door - he'll be 32. JuJu may walk in FA - and may need to in order to fit any FAs under the cap...

At the end of the day, JJ will be 32 and just had the worst statistical year of his career. He has a combined 9 sacks in the past two seasons. He still has value and would be a nice add to our line... but let's not pretend he's anywhere near the same player.

And unless it is a truly huge discount in Pittsburgh, I'd rather they pay Watt than use that money to fix other parts of their team.

They'd certainly lose Mike Hilton and Cam Sutton to sign Watt, also.

Either of whom would make intriguing fits as Browns, especially Hilton as a replacement for MJ Stewart in the slot, who single handedly had the lack of instincts which allowed Chad Henne to get 10 yards down the field before reacting.

Don't they have to resign Villaneueva their left tackle as well. He's a free agent. If they don't resign him who would play left tackle there?
That would be a big dollar contract they would have to dole out as well.

I would look at adding Joe Haden as a veteran in the secondary if they don't go after a guy like Sherman. Joe Haden has shown that he still has some game left. Plus we wouldn't be asking him to do too much.
