But don’t they know they’re a small/mid market. I thought it was impossible for those teams to pay players

They're in a market that is void of football and basketball now.. so the number one/only major sport is baseball.. Additionally, their local TV contract calls for $ 1.2 BB over 20 years starting in 2012 plus a big hunk / share of the only sports TV revenue from Fox Sports in San Diego area. Add this to the national tv deals, etc... etc.... In total, and this is just spit balling it with some serious estimates.. the Padres will be generating about $ 195 MM in non-attendance revenues. IOW they can afford their current projected payroll ($ 172 MM) without anyone in the stands.. but that is before Tatis' salary (currently pre-Arb league minimum).. Small market.. but the ONLY fish..

Who are the others you are referring to?

Huge deal for San Diego. It's a steal. It's pretty crazy how much they have tied up with Machado & Tatis alone.

Shit looks like Acuna & Albies are locked up cheap as hell.

Francisco Lindor
Trevor Story
Carlos Correa
Javier Baez
Corey Seager

all 5 are set to hit free agency after the 2021 season

Bravo Padres fans... It's a good feeling isn't it? Somehow it appears the NL West has locked two teams into what should be quite a battle for the foreseeable future. One or more of the Giants, DBack and Rox will eventually put up a charge, but for now? Wow. Just wow. Congrats you Padres fans, how can anyone be sour on any of their moves the last year or so?

Oh and they signed Mark Melancon too.

Per FanGraphs, the est 2020 TV revenue for Padres and Indians are about the same using a 4% growth rate per year analysis $47 mill for Indians vs $46 for Padres. Padres have 20% ownership thus may get a bit more on side plus FG assumes $1 billion vs your $1.2 billion contract. But, even if it’s $200 mill more over 20 years, that’s $10 million per year. And, Indians can now negotiate more $ as contract is ending soon.

The bigger difference is 2019 attendance of 2.4 million vs 1.7 million. So, 700,000 at $50 for cheap seats is $35 million per year ($50 per tix plus concessions maybe a bit low but then you share 47% of local revenue).

This does not account for difference of $172 mill vs $60 mill payroll. Not, asking Indians to sign next Machado, but resign Bieber or extend Jose for 3 to 4 more years would be nice.
