2020-2021 Cavs Season General Discussion

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
You said spotrac has them at $89 million for 10 players next season. The cap this year is $109 million, and I doubt it's going up much after playing a season with no fans. Give Allen $15 million, sign the draft pick, and they're already over the cap. If they want to bring in a free agent before signing Allen, they might have two or three million available after Allen's cap hold.
OK, I was just assuming they were staying at their current salary level. If they don't bring in a free agent other than either McGee or a replacement for him then we add Nance and the draft pick to what we have now plus however many games Love can show up for.

Not that its a big deal but I think Allen is going to cost 15 million/year at least...I don't know what kind of back up center your looking for
but you have to add those dollars to the 15 million reducing what you think you will have available.
If we intend to lock up Allen, we will be very fortunate to get the center position covered for under $20 mil

And if he was playing SF ,who plays PF when he does?
It's not a bad idea but the players are so flawed, you can't move them here and there without it creating a big hole.
If our first draft pick is power forward of if we could sign one like Bobby Portis, for example, then Nance could move down to the 3 and Okoro to the 2.

Ah ok. Their current salary level is $17 million over the cap. The only free agents they can sign are with exceptions or for minimum salaries. Or they can go above the cap in trades or to sign their own free agents.

Allen's cap hold is almost $10 million.

If they renounce the rights to everyone else, and assuming we don't bring in any money beyond this year in a Drummond trade, that would put us at about $100 million before accounting for our draft pick. Probably a little higher when you factor in the minimum cap holds for empty roster spots.

“Allen could end up with a Clint Capela-type contract: $90 million for five years,” [Terry] Pluto wrote. “The front office loves him. He is a restricted free agent. So we’re talking big money with all these centers.”

How much is Allen looking for? In the Hoop Collective podcast, Bobby Marks, the former Nets assistant GM hears the 22-year-old has a number in mind … a big number. “He’s looking for a Clint Capela-type of money,” Marks told Brian Windhorst.

You're right, that's $18 million per year. Regrettably, I have to agree it will take $20 million minimum.

Right, and we would have a cap hold for that pick too. So if the cap goes up to $111 million and that cap hold is $7 million, we have $4 million in cap space and lose the mid level exception.

My head hurts thinking of how this roster needs upgrading.

Correct, I was just providing backup.

Barring some elaborate trade, we will not the cap space to pursue any free agents.

The expiring contracts of Drummond, Allen, McGee, and Delly free up $37.4 million according to spotrac.com. I figure about $15 million to sign Allen and a backup center, leaving about $22 million. After about $7 million for our first round draft pick that leaves about $15 million if we want to keep the total right where it is now.

Why do you keep ignoring the fact that the Cavaliers won't have $37.4M "freed up" in any fashion? They are OVER the cap right now by about $15M. Them going down to ~$101M (including Jarrett Allen's cap hold) is how they get *any* available cap space and requires relinquishing rights on all FAs except Allen. The salary cap is projected to be $112M for 2021-22, so they'll, potentially, have $11M.

Please, for the love of God, stop using the wrong numbers when talking about cap space. I've shared the correct way to look at this with you several times now.

Here is the offensive production from the Cavs rotation during the 10 game losing streak.

Allen - 15.0 points on 67.1% FG
McGee - 7.3 points on 55.9% FG
Sexton - 21.0 points on 46.2% FG
Garland - 16.5 points on 45.1% FG

Prince - 8.6 points on 39.7% FG
Stevens - 4.7 points on 38.5% FG
Windler - 6.3 points on 37.3% FG
Dotson - 5.6 points on 36.6% FG
Okoro - 7.3 points on 35.1% FG
Osman - 8.6 points on 34.8% FG

Sexton and Garland have a lot to work on, but they aren't why the Cavs are losing every single night. They and Allen are getting no help from the rest of the roster. Like zero help. I'm confident they could grab people from the crowd of 2,200 and they would give a similar contribution.

Osman has tanked his value so hard. I mean there just isn't much room for a non-athletic wing who can't shoot at all.

Tony Allen is kinda one of a kind.

Right now Osman looks like your 11th or 12th man.

they don't get anyone easy looks but Allen and McGee because the lob is more obvious off the pick and roll, meanwhile everyone else is left with garbage looks on the bailout pass. The two guys who dribble the ball up, Garland and Sexton, rarely look to move the ball inside hte offense unless it involves them making the decision with the ball.

And then there's the fact that neither guy can defend very well leaving their teammates with the added burden of picking up the slack while not getting to touch the ball on offense. Everyone has played with this type of guy at the Y and it sucks.

I do not think this was true last night.

I thought Osman and Okoro had a ton of clean looks.
