2021 NBA Draft Safari

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
My man,
Every player in the history of basketball (especially people to handle the ball a lot) have had multiple turnover games! Hell players like LBJ, Kidd, Curry, etc have had several 7-8 turnover games in their careers! TOs are a part of the game!

Sure, but emphasis on "deliberate methodical." LBJ, Kidd, Curry, and other players like that are the opposite of that...they're incredibly dynamic offensive players. It's not like Cade is turning the ball over on too-ambitious no-look, behind-the-back, between-the-legs type passes. He's turning the ball over because he picks up his dribble in traffic and the defender grabs it out of his hands. These aren't turnovers that are an inch away from being highlight-reel plays...they're mostly mundane turnovers that never had any chance to be good basketball plays.

@Nathan S Im agreeing with literally every assessment you're giving on what concerns you about Cade

At the same time, I'm scratching my head trying to recall the prospect(s) that we havent seen eye to eye on. :chuckle:

Off the top of your head do you know who those guys were? I feel like there's been one or two guys in the last few years where I came away saying to myself that you know your shit but we dont watch the game through the same lens

:party smiley 004:

Was it Tristan and Dion?

Hmmm...

Of course, I'm keen to remember the ones I was right on :chuckle: . I was very high on Luka, and low on Bamba. I think we both liked Zhaire Smith, which looks pretty bad. I liked Dion and was lukewarm on Tristan.

Here are my big boards from the last few years:

2020

2019

2018

2017

Didn't post a big board, but liked Ball and Fultz like (almost) everyone else. RIP.

2016

Hated this draft, didn't really scout it :chuckle:

2015

I remember liking Porzingis and hating Okafor. Was probably wrong about some stuff too, but selective memory lol.

2014

Conversation on here was all Wiggins vs Parker, and I was kinda low on both. If I'd been smarter I would've gotten on the Embiid train.

2013

Despised Bennett. Liked Porter, Oladipo, Noel, and MCW.

2012

Liked Dion (oops)

2011

Fully sold on Kyrie, less than enthusiastic about TT. Disliked Klay (oops) but liked Kawhi (yay).

2010 and earlier never really scouted.

AHA, I distinctly remember battling you over Dion :chuckle:

We've had some back and forths.

I'll own being wrong on Luka. He still hadn't sold me up until last year when he answered the hate from Trez and the Clippers. He showed me something in that series. He was breaking PG and Kawhi OFF and I didnt expect that from him.

I was gung-ho on Embiid and I BATTLED here pretty up until draft night for him. I think we may have crossed paths there as well but if you were not onboard with Parker and Wiggins, I cant imagine who else had your eye once we won that lottery.

Good times.

Love your consistent contribution to preps-to-pros in this forum. You do some great work (I'm admitting this because we see eye to eye on Cade :chuckle:)

Enough of my distractions...

It's not that I wasn't on board with Parker/Wiggins. I was happy to draft either...I just never bought into the idea that Wiggins was Canadian LeBron or some other kind of homerun superstar. I thought he was fine.

The more I see mobley the more I think 'what would David Robinson be like in the modern game?' I just see a lot of similarity. They way they like to step through for the hook and short jumper. Willingness to make the right play. High motor but kind of mellow. I know bosh is a more obvious comp but it's what always comes to mind

Good comp in demeanor and posture.

He's got some major filling out to do. Admiral was a specimen seemingly as soon as he made his debut.

I hope that after he gets drafted and paid, he ditches the stockton shorts. Yeah, they make him look longer and taller but I dont want to see that shit :chuckle:

The kids today all love the short shorts.

It's a constant battle trying to stop the excessive short rolling in my program.

I was super adverse to Wiggins. I was watching all of Kansas games that year and he frustrated me (and Bill Self) with how he would mentally check in and out of games. I posted about it here ad-nauseum. He was FRUSTRATING to watch.

I was unimpressed with Parker too. For him to have as much skill as he had, I didnt fear him in our UNC-Duke matchups. That year I remember feeling like Rasheed Suilamon (guarantee I just butchered the spelling of his name) and Hood were probably going to be better pros. They wanted it more in our H2H matchups.

Parker was kinda meh but more skilled than Wiggins. I questioned his drive and ability to impact the game without the ball in his hand. It's crazy to see some of the red flags that you can pick up on while watching these guys in college, and how those flags and character concerns become the biggest derailment in their development.

Rch, Luka is another guy who fits that same general mold that I've been too low on: skilled wings with good jumpshots who aren't elite athletes and rely on contested jumpers for a big part of their offense. I remember thinking for Tatum and Luka that getting these jumpers off the dribble will be harder in the league and I worried that they would become inefficient shots.

Nowadays though, the league is so spaced out that the skills vs athlete equation has skewed wayyyy towards the skills side compared to before. I'm still trying to get a good feel for where the line is with guys who aren't elite speed/strength and vertical athletes. With that Tatum shot you linked at the end of game scenario, 10-15 years ago you'd probably have 2 bigs in the paint, the defender could play up on the shot a bit more with help behind, and you'd maybe have another guy cheating towards tatum with the Thibs strongside loading that everyone played. Now the defender is on an island and Tatum can cook him.

Point I'm trying to make is maybe we can't give up on Cade being an elite NBA player just because he isn't particularly athletic? If he's getting off his jump shot really effectively now, it might not be much harder on a spaced NBA floor.

You're driving a hard bargain on this Cade stock man.

I keep going into these OSU games giving him the benefit of the doubt but I cant help but feel like he's plateu'd as a elite prospect.

(sigh)

Howler, I'm going to give him these next two games against the Sooners on your recommendation before bumping him down to like 6th/7th on my big board that I keep in my heart.

He's got to show me something man

Hey man, I'm not some Cade defender here, don't get me wrong. Mobley is still my top guy and I'd probably have Green/Kuminga after. That said, I'm not sure we can write Cade off just yet. 44% from 3 and 84% from the line at 6'8" will translate at the next level.
