So who do you think will win the 1B job out of spring training?
The contenders seem to be:
Jake Bauers: Could be the best defensive 1B of the bunch. He did show signs of production in the past. Just not the recent past. I also think he's out of options.
Bobby Bradley: Prodigious power, but not much contact. Can you live with that? Word is he's in great shape.
Josh Naylor: A good defensive 1B, and seems to have a good baseball IQ. Not as much power as Bradley. But if he doesn't win 1B, I don't see him in LF ahead of Eddie Rosario.

My pick is Naylor. I just like the way he plays the game. Plus, anybody that makes the Yankees look bad in the playoffs is ok with me.

Who's your pick?

I like Naylor a good bit, and believe he will be a productive player for us. I do not believe he is in competition with Eddie, he'll be competing for the opposite corner with DJ, I'd assume. I will be quite interested to see if Naylor sees many ST innings at 1B, in addition to OF...if so, we could see him split time.

Who knows as to the other two -- but my gut says Bauers. We'll see....

Perhaps a dumb question: can Franmil learn to play 1st?

Perhaps a dumb question: can Franmil learn to play 1st?
Todays story says Franmil has zero experience at first base, beyond a few days of ground ball practice. The story quoted Naylor as saying he was strictly a first baseman, and only recently began outfield work. Per Cleve.com

I hope that I shall never see big Franny bumble absentmindedly about the infield. If his baserunning exploits serve as any indication, he has no idea what's going on at any time.

He's been doing work this off-season.

If the organization believes he can, I'd imagine you'll see him out there in the spring.

Should have an answer to this question relatively soon as games begin.

Bradley's to lose. Bauer's to seize and Naylor's to handle if those 2 can't cut the mustard.
Couldn't have said it any better as I believe this is 100% accurate.

Agree. The way I see it, the competition is essentially Bradley, Bauers, Mercado and Johnson for 2 open spots.

If Bauers or Bradley win 1B, Naylor goes to LF, Eddie to RF and Johnson would have to play CF and beat out Mercado to have a spot.

If Naylor wins 1B, Eddie goes to LF and Luplow faces lefties in RF. That opens RF for Johnson against righties and CF for Mercado.

We could also see Naylor flip between LF and 1B, with Bradley or Bauers platooning with Luplow.

Josh Naylor age 23 season 247/291/330/621 with 1 HR in 97 AB
Jake Bauers age 23 season 226/312/371/683 with 12 HR in 372 AB
Bradley's issues have been discussed in depth, and so has his prodigious power.

Expecting much from any of these 3 is asking a little much IMO, but improvements from all should be expected. Here's to hoping that's exactly what happens because it doesn't look like there are any other current options. Jones is probably not an option initially.

Jose Ramirez age 22 season: 219/291/340/631

I’m not expecting anything from anyone, but we’re all about to find out.
I’ll take the “over“ 631 OPS for both Jose and Naylor...
