So he’s a top 32 defensive pass rusher , while being significantly more double teamed than anyone else in the league.

Not significantly more, but sure, this is true.

Other pass rushers seemed to still be able to produce sack and pressure numbers better than Watt even though they were doubled at similar rates as well.

Like I said, good player, probably not worth the money he’s getting paid at his age with his injury history...

*whispers to myself* I still want clowney...

4 sacks in 8 games and 5 sacks in 16 games over the last two. Another year older at 32.

I think the most essential skill set we need for an edge to come in here and play opposite Myles is the ability to *consistently* get after the QB.

Go back to 2020 free agency. The dude's making Dante Fowler and Robert Quinn money over fewer years. Do you see either of them near the top of the basic stats you've been throwing out to try and reinforce a bad take on a player, instead of actually watching the man play?

If Watt is healthy, he's worth far more than the dollar amount on that contract. He's one of the top defensive ends in the league, and has the versatility to provide even more to a defense by shifting inside. There aren't many guys who can play 4-3 End, 3-4 End, and 4-3 DT at a high level.

Guess to you he’s worth it and to me he’s not.

also never once said he’s a bad player, just that his production has dropped off over the last couple years.

I personally think Von Miller opposite Myles would be a better fit.

I mean, the dude's in his thirties. Guys don't get better into their thirties in the NFL compared to their athletic primes in their mid-twenties.

But losing a step is relative. When a first ballot Hall of Famer loses a step, it's not the same as when a league average player loses a step. In the former case, you are still looking at good, productive NFL players who have the intangibles of players of their stature. In the latter case, those guys find themselves out of the NFL real fast.

So yes, JJ Watt isn't as good as he was five years ago. But he's still one of the better players at his position in the NFL, and that's not even taking into account his leadership and other intangibles.

That being said, if we end up with Miller, I'm not complaining.

Agreed. No reason to start bagging on JJ because he picked a similar situation to the Browns but in AZ. He is a FREE agent.

And agreed, you could make an argument that 5 years ago he was the best edge rusher of all time, (I still take Reggie White for the record), so a step slower than a 3 time DPOTY winner is still really good.

I don't think a counting stat like sacks over the past two years is an accurate indicator of what he can do on the football field.

I think Watt, if healthy, is a top-10 edge in football. My top-10 in no particular order, just a list with numbers for counting to 10.
  1. Myles
  2. Mack
  3. Bosa
  4. Bosa
  5. Chase Young
  6. Von Miller
  7. JJ Watt
  8. Cameron Jordan
  9. TJ Watt
  10. Chandler Jones?
The only players on that list I'd confidently take for 2021 over JJ Watt are Myles, Khalil, Joey Bosa and Chase Young. If someone said he's a top-5 defensive end in football, I wouldn't argue with that person.

So yeah, the man's getting paid, even though he didn't put up sacks on a depleted Houston defense.

Your lack of Danielle Hunter makes me mad.

While I would have liked Watt. It will be interesting how the FO plays this offseason. I have to imagine part of the thinking is that had we done something like this, we would not have had a lot of room to do other moves without cutting or getting players to re-work deals. With the cap hell that is happening, maybe the plan is to sit back and see if they can get multiple starts for that money.

It's fair. I think there's a pretty big line after 7, so feel free to swap out those last three spots at will. Both old guys are easy to move out. I'm also fine with anyone telling me I'm an idiot for not having TJ Watt ranked higher. I think he's more a product of Pittsburgh than an elite talent in his own right, and I know that's not a popular take.

Let's all look back at that time Kyler Murray prematurely talked about the Cardinals deal, ejaculating his enthusiasm all over Twitter.
