2020-21 Offseason Discussion

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
There are a few "team employee" situations which are hanging around out there, too.

I think that is the stickiest part of this mess, and I don't know the details myself. But the rumors are out there about team personnel, which opens up an entirely different can of worms as it pertains to a President of Baseball Ops, Manager, etc.

I'm sorry, but I am not sure what is being "covered up" by the Indians at this moment...

Again, what we learned today. Callaway was in a consensual affair with a married woman, her husband found dick pics and a video he sent her, he confronted the organization and MLB so it went up the ladder in the organization to Tito and Antonetti, and then the affair ended. In the minors he hit on girls in the stands and talked about "beef" in the locker room.

That is not enough grounds to fire anyone, let alone something egregious enough to "cover up".

Now, again, if the Indians knew of him sexually harassing a non-consenting party that would be a completely different story.

But until something that comes out about that happening while he worked in Cleveland, a consensual affair doesn't need "covered up". It's shitty, but it's not shitty enough for heads to roll and is unfortunately common place in pro sports.

It's not just about the affair. It's his overall inappropriate behavior.

They're using the affair being a personal outside of the organization matter to coverup for the fact that multiple women have reported on this dude and other people are saying it was the worst kept secret.

The coverup isn't the affair. It's his behavior during his time with the team that nobody on the team seems to remember being an issue. Weird.

So on a day where we hear Dr. Seuss books are banned, we also speculate that Tito, Antonetti, and Cherry may get caught up in a scandal.
I wonder if Dolan knew about it too???

Why I'm kind of holding my breath on everything right now. There's certainly not enough out there right now to fire anyone. But if some of these rumors start turning fact-based, it could be curtains for all of them. Just have to wait and see I guess.

What comes next?..

While looking into the stands, seeing/looking at/leering at a pretty girl will now be considered an afront/sexist/misogynistic?..

Where are the thought police?..

Eye on the ball.. It was Mickey Callaway committing an afront to these women.. it is Mickey Callaway that bears the brunt of any punishment.. otherwise.. start playing six degrees of separation and everyone can go to "misogyny jail"...

This was what I came away with as well after reading the story. All things considered, the only gaffe I see is Antonetti being cagey about it earlier this offseason. Would have been better if he was just slightly more forthcoming, especially since there is a team currently employing him and a team that hired him as Manager after he left Cleveland.

That being said, this is pretty much a non-story outside of the Cleveland market, so that's likely what the PR team advised them about. We're 3rd on the totem pole of teams involved and nobody gives a shit about baseball in the offseason. Why do you think the Angels didn't can him immediately?

The winds of 'public sentiment' are tricky with this one.

I get what's right is what's right but I'm trying to look at it from the team perspective.

That would be a surprise to me.

Outside of just general womanizing and sleaziness (believe me, affair made public is the tip of the iceberg), I haven't and didn't hear one peep about Mickey doing anything along the lines of harassment or random lewdness while in Cleveland, especially within the organization. For better or for worse, he kept his shit away from the organization.

To me, the only bad light on this situation right now is not giving the Mets the full details when they were thinking about hiring him. It would still be kept private, but also lets the Mets know to keep an eye on him like the Indians themselves were doing.

Agreed GSON. I'm concerned if someone reported Mickey to Chris or Tito and they did nothing. The fact that he was in Cleveland and acting like he did in NY is on him, not on the Indians.

I am no SJW that is for sure and many here can probably attest to that, BUT ..... it is a little disingenuous when people post stuff that says - all we have is a consensual extramarital affair

Since the publication of The Athletic’s first article, more women have come forward to say that Callaway made them uncomfortable by sending them inappropriate messages and/or photos, making unwanted advances and more while they worked for the Indians. Additionally, in 2017, an angry husband repeatedly called the team’s fan services department to complain that Callaway had sent “pornographic material” to his wife. Those calls were brought to the attention of Antonetti, manager Terry Francona and general manager Mike Chernoff; the Indians spoke with Callaway about the matter. A Cleveland attorney spoke with the wife and said – in a phone call that was recorded – that Callaway had expressed remorse to him. The attorney added that “the Indians are frickin’ pissed as hell” at Callaway and offered to have Francona call the husband. Additionally, an MLB security official contacted the husband and told him: “Mickey wants this all to go away,” and the husband later emailed MLB directly about Callaway.

No the affair isn't company direct business but sending nude pics clearly from the lockeroom is and that was part of the complaint in the affair. But beyond that, Cleveland employees that received ... that is direct company business. So if these women went on the record to say they had experienced it, their is more.

Now they may have plausible deniability because "the women didn't report it" but once the cat was out of the bag with the affair, plausible deniability ended and asking questions should have begun. And that is Antonetti's responsibility and is not going to be easy to dance around.

Again...not excusing it, but if he was to be punished and investigated for his "inappropriate behavior" that was made light in that story, which is all we know for sure that the Indians knew at the time when he was employed with the organization, 50% of the MLB and the rest of the pro sports leagues deserve to be investigated.

And the "worst kept secret" isn't about harassment or unsolicited lewdness like he is currently in trouble for. There is no evidence or a peep about that happening here. It was pretty known, obviously, that he cheated on his wife multiple times and was a misogynistic womanizer. But I fail to see why that needs investigated without a peep of nonconsensual activity. Athlete culture unfortunately surrounds itself with sex and misogynistic characters.

If you want to get into a discussion about pro athlete culture and life on the road and general womanizing/groupies, be my guest.

Francona starting to come across as a sleazebag in his own right.

Well Bimbo, if no one in Cleveland management knew it would be news to me. I am outside the org, and I knew. The agents I had discussion with are outside the org and they knew. Hard to fathom that those in the org didn't. And it wasn't just that he was a womanizer but kept it out of the org. The talk was also about the impact it was having on the women within the org. as well as the wives of the players.
