2021 NBA Draft Safari

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I am trying to catch up on this draft class little by little, and it has come to my attention that there is a prospect--and this is real--named David Duke.

Why Mr. and Mrs. Duke have you done this.

Yup.

Also, you should all know that there's a player named Pauly Paulicap.

And this year he transferred to DePaul.

I have one foot on the Scottie Barnes train assuming they don't end up in the Cade discussion. His skills really do seem to be a great fit for this current Cavs team and esp that Sexland backcourt.
With that said can someone please explain why we shouldn't be a little concerned regarding his lack of rebounding? His FT% and 3 Pt shooting leaves a little to be desired too. I believe teams were willing to overlook some of those metrics last draft since it was so weak. Cavs could probably keep starting the Sexland backcourt if they drafted a big ballhandling/high IQ forward such as Barnes. I don't think Barnes and Okoro would be a great fit in the starting lineup since neither can shoot at this point (unless of course Okoro locks himself in the gym this summer and becomes a knock down 3 pt shooter). The 3 pt shot is just too strong to overcome in the NBA to start too many non shooters.

You asking about Barnes rebounding numbers?

His shooting is a weakness. But his rebounding, in the context of his team situation, isn't a big concern to me. FSU's bigs, Koprivica, Gray, and Osborne, are all exceptional rebounders...there's just not much work left to do on the glass after those guys have had their share.

They run alot press full court and Barnes is usually at the head of that

In the half court zones, he's at the top of those too.

Not to mention he has maybe 4 upperclass bigs he's always on the floor with.

On the offensive end, he usually ends up on the perimeter because he's their best initiator. Check out these few plays against Georgia Tech earlier in the year. You'll see him on their full court press, top of their half court zone, and watch him on the few offensive set plays how he's always on the perimeter and the first guy back in transition D.

beat me to it

If they wanted him to or needed him to, he'd be a great rebounder. He has a nose for the ball and just does whatever is necessary to win a possession.

Made a graph a few months ago comparing his teammates to Simmons' teammates at LSU...pretty incredible difference :chuckle:

It's a tough comparison in part because their college situations are so different. One factor is that Barnes has to play second banana to talented scoring guard MJ Walker. But the more significant factor is how much bigger FSU is than Simmons' LSU squad. I made a graph to compare their teams by height and weight to illustrate this (FSU players in blue, LSU players in red, minimum 10 minutes per game):

While Barnes and Simmons have similar skillsets, Barnes can't simply live in the paint like Simmons did. Instead he's often on the perimeter on both ends of the floor, and his stats reflect that role.

How does Barnes fit with the Cavs? don't you think we need some shooting?

Everyone but Allen and maybe Okoro can shoot. And as @Derek pointed out, if Okoro can't shoot he probably shouldn't be playing, let alone starting. There's no place in the modern NBA for a 6'5" player who's a pure defensive specialist/hustle guy.

So you'd pick Barnes first for the Cavs?

Thanks guys..very informative as usual. You guys really know your stuff. I gave Okoro the benefit of the doubt on his rebounding last year at Auburn since he was also playing with a bunch of upper classmen. Of course Barnes' steal rate should tell you that he definitely has a nose for the ball.

Josh Giddey's numbers are beginning to improve. He's 10/24 from deep in his last 6 games after starting the season 2/20, his steals are up, and he's continuing to pack the box score with rebounds and assists. Here's how his profile compares to Ball's profile last year (per-40 pace adjusted):

Giddey: 13.4 points (.38/.27/.65 shooting), 8.8 rebounds, 7.3 assists, 1.8 steals, 0.8 blocks, 2.6 fouls, 3.7 turnovers
Ball: 21.6 points (.39/.28/.70 shooting), 9.4 boards, 8.6 assists, 2.1 steals, 0.2 blocks, 3.3 fouls, 3.2 turnovers

What stands out is the big gap in scoring output. Elsewhere, though, Giddey is well within the same ballpark. I'd probably have him in the teens on my board at the moment.
