NFL Off-Season Thread

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Man, I disagree I think.

This deal is a lot if you’re saying we don’t know if Darnold isn’t your future QB. That Teddy deal was dog shit, and Darnold can’t be the backup when you need to make an opinion decision and you paid this much.

I also don’t think you can pay this much, and say, one of the five QBs is there at 8. Like why wouldn’t you take 5 years versus two, and keep everything else?
Darnold is obviously their QB. He's an upgrade over Bridgewater.

They aren't drafting a QB at 8.

How are they going to protect a QB?

LT - Cam Erving
LG - Dennis Daley
C - Matt Paradis
RG - Pat Elflein
RT - Taylor Moton

Idk, I think they'll need quite a bit of YoY improvement from adding Erving/Elflien and I'm just not sure those guys are the impact players needed to do it.
Well, Moton is an absolute stud. Greg Little should be their other starting tackle over Erving, right? I know PFF says he struggled last year after being a second round pick in 2019, but I'm not going to pretend like I've watched a ton of Greg Little film to be able to give my thoughts on the player. Either way, that's a spot where they could use an upgrade. Maybe they draft it this year.

The team certainly needs work, but considering last year was year one of the rebuild, I like what they're doing. That defense is coming together, and they have skill positions to boot with Robby Anderson, DJ Moore and CMC.

They aren’t now. I hate both, fwiw.
I think Darnold can be fine. We'll see what happens. After every other career that's been saved after leaving Adam Gase, I'm not writing him off just yet.

I have a much higher opinion of Darnold today than I did of Tannehill when he got away from Gase.

A few pages back, people were bickering over past QB evaluations. Well, fun fact for today:

Not a single quarterback taken in the first round from 2009-2016 is still with the team that drafted them.

Twenty-two QB's, not a single one is still there. That's just crazy.
  • Matt Stafford
  • Mark Sanchez
  • Josh Freeman
  • Sam Bradford
  • Tim Tebow
  • Cam Newton
  • Jake Locker
  • Blaine Gabbert
  • Christian Ponder
  • Andrew Luck
  • Robert Griffin III
  • Ryan Tannehill
  • Brandon Weeden
  • EJ Manuel
  • Blake Bortles
  • Johnny Manziel
  • Teddy Bridgewater
  • Jameis Winston
  • Macrus Mariota
  • Jared Goff
  • Carson Wentz
  • Paxton Lynch

Looks like 2017-2018 is starting to creep into this list faster than anticipated...

Not a bad deal for each organization.

I think the Panthers are building a strong team over there. They're quietly feeling very much like the NFC Colts to me.

I'm not sure I agree with you. I think Darnold might have a resurgence and an alright career on another team, maybe even the Panthers. But that's an unknown and he didn't look very good in NY. The Panthers paid a lot more than I'd have been willing to give up - no way a second rounder would be on the table for me, no matter what year it was in.

The Jets might be the worst team in football right now, but i cant think of a single 1st round qb that the Browns took when they had that title that resurrected their career on another team

Not saying it wont happen, but not allot of precedence for it to happen.

Literally just happened with another Adam Gase QB two years ago.

If that's the consensus, I should put a bet down on the Jets over/under wins this year...

Tanahill? Exception, not the rule, but that is a case that happens once every 5 years or so. I didnt say it never happened, just saying it doesnt happen often.

You could argue Brees was resurrected from an average career in SD to first ballot HOF and top 10 QB in NOLA.

But these examples are not hugely common.

You said there's not a lot of precedence for it happening. I pointed out that it literally happened two years ago with the same coach.

So while it may not be likely that Darnold resurrects his career, I think it's entirely possible.

And if we're being honest, Darnold is a far better prospect than just about any QB the Browns have drafted the past twenty-ish years other than Mayfield and maybe Couch. And a lot of people had Mayfield ranked below Darnold heading into that draft. Many had Darnold as the QB1 in that class. As for Couch, I was like 15 when he was drafted so I have no idea how he was viewed as a prospect because I didn't give a fuck back then.

Semantics, not allot doesnt mean zero, but maybe every 5-10 years. If you listed 15-20 i would have shut up and said i was wrong, but i can think of 2, and i am sure their are a couple of others, but its not very common for a qb to suck, and then go somewhere else and not suck.

I am not saying he wont turn it around, just unlikely. Doesnt mean he isnt worth a shot, every year 4-5 QB's are given a shot either as a starter or backup.

Who else besides Tannahill? Bridgewater probably doesnt count. Injured, looked good in NOLA, then not so good. Just doesnt seem to be a ton of success stories....a few, just not a ton.

The result of different scenarios in the past don't change the likelihood of outcomes for this scenario... because they're different scenarios.

Nobody was LeBron until LeBron. Nobody was Tom Brady until Tom Brady.

Whether Sam Darnold succeeds in Carolina is going to depend on Sam Darnold and Carolina--not what Ryan Tannehill or Drew Brees did.

I'm interested to see what Carolina does in the draft, but I'd bet against them finishing at the bottom of the division. I wouldn't be surprised at all if they finished second in their division and challenged for a wild card spot this year, with Darnold looking like someone closer to an acceptable starting QB like Kirk Cousins, than whatever he was in New York.

I think Matt Rhule is building a really good, competent team down there. I think Carolina's offense isn't as bad as people think (even though I personally think CMC is overrated), and I think Darnold still has abilities that translate to the NFL.

It may take him a while to unlearn bad habits. He may never get there. But they're a team I have a feeling I'll be higher on than most this year.
