Ainge has drafted brilliantly. It's like people don't realize how hard it is to nail draft picks even to the all-star level.

And the Kyrie trade wasn't Ainge spending his bullets or anything. He understood that Isiah Thomas was washed, even if we didn't. He didn't give up a single thing of value in that trade except for the Nets pick, and he had plenty of other picks to work with. Say what you want about how Kyrie didn't work out on the Celtics, Kyrie definitely was NOT washed and is and was an immeasurably greater player than Thomas.

The problem Ainge faces is that just drafting "well" is not enough. With very few exceptions in NBA history (the early 2000s Pistons?) championship teams need an all-time great player, a high level Hall of Fame type player. The stars have not aligned to make that kind of player accessible to the Celtics. Ainge needed to go all in with his resources to snag guys like AD or Kawhi Leonard when they became available, even if it involved significant risk. One issue Ainge seems to have is being unwilling to take risks, he waits for sure things. That and not appreciating frontcourt size.

We drafted Hot Rod, Daugherty, Harper and KJ, plus traded for Price on draft day. That all happened within three drafts. It wasn’t enough, partly because we had injuries but mostly because none of those guys were high level.

Meanwhile LeBron has been to ten of the past fourteen Finals and some of those teams were not exactly loaded with other talent.

No other pro sports league is like the NBA in that respect. Having a really great man is everything in the NBA (with relatively rare exceptions like the 2003-4 Pistons).

Yea honestly Ainge is an above average drafter.

You don't hit them all. But he's hit enough.

And the fact that they've been to something like 3 out of the last 4 ECFs (or 4 of 5?) without 1 single top ten player on the team any of those times is pretty indicative that he's put together good, well-rounded teams.

Think about it like this.

They got to the ECF with a team led by Isaiah Thomas and Jae Crowder.

They then traded those guys for Kyrie Irving, and got there again (w/o Irving being healthy).

Irving leaves and still yet they get there AGAIN. So that's basically 3 different iterations of the team making the ECF in a very short span.

That's impressive man.

One more thing on Ainge.

After they traded KG and Pierce and Allen, they suffered just TWO losing seasons. ANd the 2nd they were 40-42.

So when evaluating him, take into account just how fast that turn around was after ripping the team down. We could only dream..

Be honest I'm not sure why Denver traded for Javale if they don't actually plan to use him.

He doesn't even get a minute in garbage time blowouts.

Really odd.

For moments like tonight with the Joker on the bench in early moments of the 4th with 3 fouls

Well I think Malone is also just sicking with what he knows.

But I'm pretty sure for his 15 a night that Javale is better than Millsap is these days.

He’s not. As someone who watches Denver almost as much as the Cavs, Millsap has still been giving them good minutes all year.

If anyone should lose minutes to JaVale, it’s JaMychal Green. Even then, it should be based on the match-up.

Campazzo is the only current rotation guy that really doesn't belong now that Morris is back.

They got McGee for nothing. Maybe they just wanted him for injury insurance.

I think they are bringing him I slowly and saving him for specific playoffs matchups

I agree with this.

I've been watching them for Malone's entire tenure there and I believe this is his approach to integrating McGee.

I agree with this as well. I want to see Denver and the Clippers in the West final and I'm patiently waiting for Malone to make this phase to his rotation. Morris and Dozier should be the reserve guards getting run come playoff time.

He played Dozier in the second half last night after using Campazzo early. It was Morris's first game back, so I'm hoping he realizes that Dozier is the one that should be playing.

Regardless, he has some time to figure it out.
