The 2021 Cleveland Baseball Organization

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I posed the question on Twitter, but I'm curious to see what you guys think:

Who finishes the season with a higher WAR? Lindor or Amed Rosario and Gimenez combined?

Gun to my head, Lindor. But I'll certainly be rooting for our guys. As of tonight, Lindor is leading 0.3 to 0.2 according to bWAR.

Lindor, and I doubt it will be close. He'll give the Mets a 5-7 WAR season and our 2 guys might struggle to get to 4. I hope I'm wrong for the record.

But it isn't just Lindor.

Its Lindor and Cookie for what we got for them and what the trade allowed us to do with some of the money saved.

Lindor plus Cookie

Vs

Gimenez
Amed
Eddie
Hernandez

If you go by last years numbers, it was pretty close to a draw. 3.6 fWAR to 3.3 in favor of the guys we have now.

Actually, Lindor would have made about $18 million if he played this season in Cleveland and Carrasco is making $12 M, so the Indians divested $30 M. Rosario and Hernandez are making a combined $13 M so the Indians saved $17 M in addition to getting Gimenez and A. Rosario, who are making a combined $3 M. So the final tally is $14 M saved this season and we get a starting SS, a starting 2B, a starting LF, and eventually a starting CF. Even though that money wasn't spent it will be used to offset a portion of last year's losses and enable to get the organization back to a position where they can raise the payroll sooner.

Also, they have Gimenez and Amed for several more years whereas Lindor would have been a free agent after this season. Carrasco is injured and expected to be out 6-8 weeks.

I'm feeling pretty good about the trade so far and even more so if Amed can develop into a competent defender in CF who hits .280/.800 or thereabouts.

The 2020 season was a wash and the 60 games played taken with a grain of salt. If you're combining Lindor and Carrasco then you're talking 8-10 WAR easily. Anything less from those 2 combined would be a disappointment. Eddie's best season was 4.3 WAR and that was an anomaly. He's usually just under 2 WAR. Hernandez will give us around 2 WAR. Gimenez and Amed are wildcards, but I would be pleased with 4 WAR out of them combined.

Financially, the Indians did what they had to do and I'm not regretting it TBH, but this team did not get better and I'm not going to pretend it did. I think adding Wolf and Green added quality to the minors, and Gimenez is a damn fine, young SS, but he is no Francisco Lindor. Amed is a good athlete and was once a highly regarded prospect, but clearly is no impact player. If he was more than that, then the Mets wouldn't have made the move for Lindor.

Is Amed going to be happy out there? I don't think his future earning potential is lowered much as potential 15hr cf. If anything it might go up.

I was looking at the power rankings that came out. We are above .500 and whatnot but our rankings went down...from 16th to 19th..

The Athletic had this on Franmil...

Entering Sunday’s series finale against Detroit, Reyes’ average exit velocity was 97.0 mph. His hard-hit rate was 65 percent. Both rank among the league’s elite. It’s reflected in his results; through 32 plate appearances, Reyes has a .333/.375/.800 slash line.

“It’s totally different now, how I see the ball travel more,” Reyes said, “and recognize what is hanging, what is away, what is in. It’s unbelievable. It’s a good feeling.”

If Reyes is really seeing the ball better than he ever has (and the early results bear this out) he could have a Travis Hafner in his prime type of season.
