The 8-9 White Sox come to Cleveland for a two-game rematch of last week's four game series in Chicago that was a 2-2 split. The Tribe is 8-7 and in second place with the Sox a game behind.
Game 1 is a rematch of Rodon vs. Plesac that started and ended disastrously for the Tribe last week, with Plesac giving up six runs in the first and Rodon flirting with a perfect game and ending with a no-hitter.
Rodon is on a roll having allowed no hits in his last 11 innings. If fact, he hasn't allowed a hit to the last 41batters he faced. The exact count is 41 batters, 0 hits, 2 hit batters, and 3 walks. The walks all came in the same inning. The best strategy is to just stand there, don't swing, and hope he either hits or walks you.
Rodon signed a one-year deal with the White Sox this winter for $3 million. He's 28 years old. If only we'd offered him four....
Plesac started impressively with two earned runs in his first two starts covering 13 innings. But it all came apart in his last start and now he has to face the same team. Talk about getting back on the horse...
Nick Madrigal was 4-for-10 against the Tribe in the first series. Jose Abreu was 1-for-12 and is hitting .188 so far. A big key for the Indians will be to keep him from doing damage. He's going to start hitting sooner or later.
Aaron Civale, 3-0, is going Wednesday if they can plow the snow off the field by game time. The White Sox have not named a starter per ESPN.
With Rodon going I'm expecting Rosario at short, Luplow in center, and Chang at first.
Edit: Just checked the lineups. Yep, they're all in.
So what's the over/under on what inning the Indians get their first hit? Or will Rodon become the first pitcher since Johhny Vander Meer in 1938 to throw back-to-back no-no's? One thing four sure, he's got the right team to do it against.
