2021 Around MLB: Return of the Dead Ball Era

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
No, I'm talking about split admission doubleheaders, the kind that aren't played back to back, where patrons have to leave and pay again to come in to see a seven inning game. I think the rationale of the back to back seven inning doubleheader has already worn off, but hey, at least they aren't charging separate admissions for two so-called complete games...unless one is a no-hitter, of course. Then the game is "not worthy", evidently.
Did you take your user name from the immortal Joe Azcue, ex-tribe catcher? I remember him hitting into an unassisted
triple play against the Washington Senators. I think the fielder was Ron Hansen.

The best part of this is Azcue wanted to know if the HOF wanted him to donate his bat.

fwiw re the no-hitter - baumgarner gets credit for a shutout and a complete game

Yep. When I was a kid, my father would always say, "Who asked you? Why, Joe Azcue!" He loved Joe and disliked Duke Sims. Most fans liked one or the other it seems. But mostly my dad couldn't stand the previous catcher, John Romano, so Azcue was an improvement by default.

Speaking of unassisted triple plays, Joey Votto really blew it the other night...could have put himself in the rarest of the rare in the record books, along with Ron Hansen, had he just trotted over to third to "triple off" Eddie Rosario after snagging that Josh Naylor screamer. But no, he had to toss the ball to the third baseman. Idiot. :p

Remember Asdrubal Cabrera's unassisted triple play?
As he returned to the dugout, he casually tossed the ball (now a legitimate HOF item) into the stands. D'oh!

Watching the Royals today and I'm just amazed at what an offensive force Salvador Perez has become. I forgot what it's like to have a catcher be that kind of presence in a lineup. Wow, just wow.

That Santana guy would look nice in a Cleveland uni at 1B.

Of course, but I wouldn't have signed him for two years even if money were no object, not after last year.
I would have.

If the FO wants to say they couldn’t afford him because of pandemic losses, fine, but if they made the decision to let him go based on a 60 game sample then I’m very disappointed in our FO.

It wouldn't surprise me if they did offer him some type of contract, but it probably wasn't the same price tag as KC...

It wasn't just last year. His 2018 sucked too. I'm always amazed how selective our memories, as if 2019 wasn't the outlier, and aging doesn't matter. Tribe decision-making was sound when it came to Santana's price tag. There was hardly a cacophony of criticism around here when the Tribe failed to match the Royals' offer.

Not selective memory. He was still an above average offensive player in 2018 despite his BABIP being 30 points below his career average.

As I said, if it’s a pandemic losses thing, I can live with that. But, if they let him go because they thought Santana was done being a run producer, then I think that’s gross ineptitude.

Let me get this straight: for an aging player, you would rather have bet on his 2019, which was thirty points ABOVE his lifetime BABIP than give credence to 2018 and 2019 which were twenty-five and forty points BELOW his career BABIP, respectively.

There's a wide difference between being "done as a run producer" and a willingness to overpay for whatever run-producing can be reasonably expected at his age. I get it, you love the guy, we all did. But immediate results don't triumph the wisdom of the decision.

Good for him:

Couldn't agree more. Has been a couple very rough years for a great pitcher. Nice to see some moments in the bright sun come back his way.
