I'd say it's five alarm fire time for the Lakers but it truly doesn't matter.

So long as Harden is healthy, it's over anyway.

OKC is a disgrace.

What's everyone's take on the play in? LeBron has a pouty face.

Think it’s a good idea in this shortened season, but for a regular 82 game schedule it’s not needed. Teams play too many games as it is

I think of him more of an extra bonus.

Saw some commentators going on about how Jrue shut him down, and thats all well and good, but when Harden is back, Jrue can’t guard them both(not do I think he can shut Kyrie down game in and game out)

If they all get healthy and are able to gel, it’s just going to be hard to beat them, with three supreme shot makers/shot creators who are all as capable as anyone else in the NBA as going NBA Jam on fire mode at any time.

hate to say this because it’s an asshole thing to say, but I was sort of hoping Durants career was over after his injury as divine punishment for taking the easy road to a championship. Now not only is he back he’s somehow managing to take the easy road again

Durant is almost as fragile as Nance. It's just a matter of time before his career is over.

Agreed

If the Lakers go 1-7 in their last eight games, there is a REALLY outside chance they end up in the lottery (would be predicated on Spurs, Warriors, Memphis, New Orleans (they need to win out) finishing scorching hot).

LAL play six playoff teams, Houston, New Orleans in their final eight.

Edit: Apologies, I'm not sure if this scenerio is possible. NO has to play GS three times, and I haven't looked at the schedule of the other teams. Still, LA could drop to 9/10 considering how they've been playing.

I think it's kind of dumb to have non-contenders in the playoffs. Only one 5-8 seed has ever won (the 47-35 Rockets in '95). No team with a losing record has made the finals in 40 years. The NBA playoffs aren't supposed to be a fun free-for-all like March Madness...they're supposed to be about determining the NBA champions.

Get off my lawn, etc.

I don't like the play-in tourney either because it further devalues the point of the regular season.

Teams are gonna tank. That, to me, is the secondary issue. No matter how you slice, there will always be really bad teams in every league.

What they need to fix is the issue with the top contenders just resting guys all the time thus making the best regular season games not worth watching.

And you don't do that, imo, by making it even easier to get into the dance.

Agreed.

I would have preferred them reducing the playoff field rather than expanding it.

Drop to 6 teams, top 2 get a bye while 3v6 and 4v5 take place in a 5 game series that spans a single week.

Let's see how much teams fight for those top seeds then.

Unfortunately, it will never happen because fewer games=less money.

Let's look at 5-6-7 in both conferences right now:

East:
5. Hawks, 35-30
6. Heat, 35-30
7. Celtics, 34-31

West:
5. Mavericks, 36-28
6. Lakers, 36-28
7. Blazers, 36-28

Sure would be a lot more interesting to watch those teams fight for their playoff lives over the remainder of the season instead of waiting to see which of these teams is going to end up playing the Spurs or Wizards in the play-in tournament.

LeBron was in favor of it because the NBA was coming out of a dead period, with about 3 months between the last game in March and first one back in late July. Teams that were fighting for a playoff spot when they resumed only had 8 games left, so it didn't make much sense to make those teams enter the bubble only to potentially be eliminated a few days into the restart. It worked as a one-time circumstance.

I'm not a fan of it personally and agree with @Derek that I'd prefer less than more. 3 of the 4 play-in teams in the East don't even have a winning record this season. It is more "playoff" games for the NBA though and more $ as a result, so I have a feeling it will stick.
