Aaron Rodgers And the Issues

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
i think counting on Rodgers to play at a MVP level after 40 (3 years) is a recipe for disaster.

I never said I was. My point is there’s no guarantee that Baker at 31 is better than Rodgers at 42, even if Rodgers isn’t playing MVP caliber football.

So, you wouldn't trade Baker for Rodgers straight up if Rodgers wanted a new contract?
So if the browns traded for him, his cap hit would basically be 25 million for the next 3 years (not exactly, but close). With the packers eating a ton of his signing bonus cap hit. Basically a huge plus for the Browns. They would still have at least some wiggle room of cap space.

If he wanted another 4 year 140 million contract, it would make his cap hit 40 million dollars over each of those years, not only eliminating any wiggle room the browns have from a cap stand point, but effectively double paying his signing bonus.

My unwillingness to give him a contract like that is partially from a browns stand point but also an NFL stand point in that it sets a very bad precedent.

4 yrs 140 is AAV of 35 mil a year.

And you can always dump money into the future, and the Browns FO is good at doing that.

And, if you're going to rebuild anyways, having some dead money down the road is no big deal.

Plus, Browns can structure it so that his cap number is bigger after the new TV deal hits.

I worry about the cap alot. But I do so more when you hand big-ish contracts to players who aren't quite worth it. I'm fine with not wanting to sacrifice cap space for a Schobert or a Richardson. Rodgers would be worth it.

right, but once again, he has already gotten 23 million in bonus money for those 2 years.

At the end of the year, Baker was on par with Rodgers.

With all due respect to Rodgers, who is threatening retirement and relies heavily on his ability to move/ have a great arm, he's nothing like Brady.

It would be a mistake.

Strong disagree with the first sentence.

100% agreement with the second. Rodgers relies more on athleticism, and holds the ball far longer than Brady.

If it's a straight-up swap in fairy tale land, I make it.

I think you will be surprised and shocked how high the ceiling is with Baker in this offense, personally.

I think Rodgers, in his second year in a similar system, put up MVP numbers and I expect that same thing with Baker.

I don't think Baker will ever put up MVP numbers, especially in this offense.

I also put zero credence into the value of those counting stats that typically matter for MVP, so that bodes well for Baker.

Yeah, if we're good, we'll be running the ball too much for Baker to win MVP.

But like you, don't care about that. Lamar Jackson won MVP and got bounced in round one.

In August of 2018 Rodgers signed a 4 year 134 million contract extension to go through 2023. As a part of that deal he got a 57 million dollar signing bonus, a deal now halfway done. To rework his contract now with an addition large signing bonus, would effectively be giving him double bonus money, for the same years.

Not necessarily.

You can do a lot with contracts and signing bonuses. Plenty of ways to give him what he wants and still be in OK cap shape.

@bob2the2nd feel free to smack me around if I'm wrong.

@col63onel I think what @bob2the2nd is trying to say is that it sets a bad precedent if players are allowed to just double-dip on guaranteed money by demanding a trade. It gives even more financial incentive to players to get traded.
