Anyone else play JRPGs?

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Love both of those series! I have all of them at my parents house and I remember it was the 3rd on for both of them I played a lot growing up!

Have you been playing any current ones? Any others on the list you recommend?

Started up Dragon Quest a while back but haven't gotten around to really digging into it.

I think I might do that this weekend then I've got Tales of Symphonia to play.

which dragon quest? Honestly Tales of Symphonia is better than majority of the Dragon Quest games. Both series have a lot of stability but the character development and storyline has always been stronger in the Tales series to be honest.

Final Fantasy IX over VII? My kind of list.

Also Morrowind over Oblivion and Skyrim is absolutely the right call.

Morrowind kind of setup Oblivion and Skyrim honestly so it's more important than the other two in my mind and 7 is a big deal as a game, but it's not the best JRPG, just the one that in my mind made Americans wake up to what JRPGs are. I mean I like 10 the best of the series at the end of the day. That's what is great about that series though, all of them did fairly well and you can argue for your favorite and not honestly be wrong...

Haven't played symphonia but it is part of the holy trinity of tales games.

One of my high school buddies put a good 200 hours in the game so he could get everything in it! It's a very good RPG, but tales of Destiny 2 (tales of eternia in Japan) is my favorite from the series. Play it if you can, it's really good. (Tales series in my opinion is superior to Dragon Warrior/Quest games but history gaming wise Dragon Warrior/Quest is way more important..

I'll be honest...did not like FFX. I just hated Tidus, and so the entire story being focused around his daddy issues didn't do it for me. I think that's the same reason VII isn't my favorite. Cloud is just such an unlikable character. He does nothing but whine and complain the entire game. There's not necessarily anything wrong with a protagonist who is a dick, but they at least have to be cool if you're going that route. Cloud looks like a fifteen year old emo kid and acts roughly the same. There's nothing cool about him. And one of your main sidekicks seems like he's in a competition with Cloud to see who can be more of an asshole.

IX, on the other hand, had quite a few really enjoyable characters, from the lead Zidane down to Vivi, one of my favorite characters in the entire franchise. Steiner was really the only asshole in your party, as far as I can recall, and his role for much of the game was essentially as a comedic foil for the more important characters.

I will say that there was nothing wrong with the gameplay in X. I wish the FFVII remake had turn-based combat like that.

My brother liked FFIX the most as well so I didn't play it until I got older (I always played different games than him lol) Honestly just playing the game, it's a very underrated game in all aspects at the end of the day.

Been playing any newer RPGs? I think I know a few games you would like if you want any suggestions let me know, since it sounds like certain character styles that you need to like it game. I end up skipping games myself if I don't like the storyline/main characters so I completely get it.

The answer might be persona 5... by an enormous margin.

Persona 5 (Royal is my favorite version of it) is just an amazing game, it's gonna be hard for them to ever top it... And that's saying something since 3 & 4 are both legit as well...

Did you ever play the Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel series?

I actually bought that a month or two ago because I had never played a Persona game, it was thirty bucks, and the FFVII remake had left a bad taste in my mouth and I wanted a JRPG palate cleanser.

But then the Mass Effect remaster came out and I started playing that instead. Maybe BioWare should just stick to remastering their old games for a few years and rebuild their reputation.

Nope. Honestly haven't even finished Persona 5 yet. Want to finish it, then let it digest for a while to avoid recency bias, but I think it's going to go down as my #1 game of all time, knocking Portal 2 from its throne.

I'd love for Royal to get ported to something that isn't PS5.

Play it... it's better than Mass Effect, and I'm a big Mass Effect fan.

Ive played about 5 of them now (Phantasia, Abyss, Vesperia, Zestria, Berseria), and I think all of them were an 8/10 or better other than Zestria. Vesperia is probably my favorite. I think I have ~80-100 hours in each, except Abyss which I have run 3 times now (~200 hours total).

I need persona 5 on the switch. Dont really want to get a new system just for it.

If you can find/willing to spend the money, Tales of Destiny 2 is worth getting...It's a PS1 game though so its a good 100ish right now if not more... Tales I think almost made too many games for all of them to be great, but they have a new one coming out sometime in the next yearish... Which systems do you have?
