2021 NBA Draft Safari

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I'm never really gonna be happy with Cade because I'm mainly a numbers guy, and the numbers on him just aren't all that good.

I wouldn't be over the moon with Garuba either, it's just that, out of everyone we could draft, he seems like the clear best fit if we're sticking with our apparent core of Garland/Sexton/Okoro/Allen next season. He'll help ensure that they're respectable on defense, and he'll be an unobtrusive roleplayer on offense.

The hope would be that Garland/Sexton take the next step and actually become an elite 2-man offensive engine, and then Okoro/Garuba/Allen bring the length, athleticism, and defense.
Even if Garland and Sexton become elite level scorers and unlock a powerful regular season offense, Im of the mind you need a plus level to elite level wing scorer.

Would be super nervous to draft someone like a Garuba and push back getting that wing another season.

Would trigger TT over Kawhi\Klay nightmares for me

If we really need a wing scorer like you're describing, then we're gonna have to trade one of Garland/Sexton/Okoro. Lineups like Garland/Sexton/Okoro/Cade/Allen (or plug in any wing scorer for Cade) are going to be hopelessly bad on D.

I'm totally down to make trades and change the trajectory of this rebuild, by the way. I'm just saying Garuba is one guy in this draft who averts the immediate need to make a big roster decision like that. So if you think that he's among the best players available where we're drafting, he'd be a very unsurprising pick.

A trade like that could be an option once we let things settle in. So could one of Sexton or Garland off the bench in the long term, as much as that gets people all up in arms. Or just the off possibility, that it does work and begins a new branch of a trend or possible outcome.

Just don’t see a singular guy on this roster that should prevent us from taking BPA. I understand that that presents difficulty for you when discussing Cade, since you don’t see him as BPA anywhere in the 1-8 slots

It sure does get me up in arms...we're gonna shell out a near-max contract to Sexton and then have him come off the bench? Wtf??? :chuckle:

I think there's a decent chance we finally give up on the Garland/Sexton backcourt this year and trade one of them, but if we don't have the guts to do that and we're drafting in the 6-8 range where there's no consensus superstar prospect, then Garuba would make a lot of sense as a "build around SexLand" pick.

Garuba's defense would be great to have for sure. Especially how the league is trending. But cant really say his the clear best fit with the shooting concerns imo. Him and Okoro would be two guys next to a non shooting Allen, who are in need of significant improvement. How much do you see his shooting improving?

So about Cade, i think playing next to two primary ballhandlers could really bring his TOs down. And if he's making passes after defensive breakdwons as a tertiary handler, i think his vision could be capitalized on much better. Altough agreed, his defense isnt ideal next to Sexland.

2018 Draft is starting to look pretty damn good.

Luka
Trae
Ayton
SGA
Mikal Bridges
Michael Porter Jr.
Sexton
Jaren Jackson Jr.
Miles Bridges
Huerter

With some still developing guys like Bagley, Brunson, Robert Williams, Anfernee Simons, Grayson Allen, Lonnie Walker, DiVincenzo

A lot of drafts do worse for both high end talent and for quality role players.

Maybe I'm misremembering but didn't 2 of those players end up on the Hawks?!

Do you see anything in the film/numbers that shows Garuba being more than a player who is somewhere in a TT to Capela range? Because if that’s his most likely comp range, I would hate that pick with a passion,

Unless they change the rules to demphasize the 3 and allow much more physical play, I just feel like you get your defense from system, communication, true two way stars, and out of the lottery role players.

Dont think we have the roster to be drafting a defensive big in the top ten.

I 100% think that shooting is the swing skill for Garuba here (which is why I posted that video yesterday).

Right now he's attempting 3's at a solid rate for a teenage big, 3.6 per 40 minutes. But he's making them at just 31%, and he shoots a middling 65% from the foul line. He's probably closer to having a functional NBA 3-point shot than the other top PF-adjacent players, but that's not saying much.

10 first half points for Garuba, including a couple of big 3's, as they cling to a narrow lead in the winner-takes-all game 3 of the Spanish League semis.

He's had 12 games with multiple 3's this season, and 7 of them have come in the last two months. I'm not confident that he'll be a great (or even good) shooter in the NBA, but it's seeming less and less likely that he'll be a complete non-shooter.

I would be slightly surprised if Garuba goes in the lottery to anyone besides the Spurs in this draft tbh. right or wrong, regrets later or not. Just don't see the draw being enough, over others with similar potential, who are ranked lower with less attention on them right now, far removed seasons in the g league or college

Does Garuba not deserve credit for coming up big in elimination games against elite opponents? 16/14 today, including some huge crunch-time buckets to secure a 3-point win and a trip to the finals. Seriously impressive stuff, IMO.

Yeah that is probably why someone like Davion Mitchell and Juzang? are getting top 20 attention. It matters, but more than it should probably.
