Anyone else play JRPGs?

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Switch/PC for modern gens. Have a Gamecube lying around somewhere too

Well Roms and emulators on the PC, but honestly a backwards compatible PS3 is one of the most important systems to an JRPG player since you have so many that are PS1 and PS2...

I'd say a PC is the most important system ;)

Basically everything outside of PS4, PS5, and the Xbox consoles.

There's a reason I'm not playing Royals... and it's because P5R wasn't released on PS3. There isn't a good PS4 emulator yet.

I collect physical copies of games so it's important for me to have the systems and some of your logic is good, but not all games have legit ROMs....

Play it... it's better than Mass Effect, and I'm a big Mass Effect fan.

Well, I'm a few hours into Mass Effect 2, so I'm probably just going to burn through this trilogy before moving on to something else. I've never actually played the third game since they modified the ending, so I'll be interested to see if it's still as soul-crushingly disappointing as it was ten years ago.

As a side note, the first game is shorter than I remembered it being. Knocked it out in about twenty hours, and I did basically all the side missions outside of fully gathering all the resources.

I remember going to like every planet, playing the same generated missions over and over, gathering resources for what felt like an eternity in ME1 :chuckle:

That's still there, but they made the MAKO control a bit better so it's not quite as frustrating.

Also, they updated the combat in the first game and it's definitely better, but it still sucks. Your powers seem really difficult to use accurately compared to the second game. I mostly just ignored those powers and stuck to upgrading my pistol ability. Some of the later weapon mods can make you godlike if you upgrade a weapon stat all the way.

The second game is night and day with combat. The movement is still janky and it can be tough to maneuver around cover in the middle of a firefight without getting stuck to the wrong surface and lit up, but the gunplay and powers are actually fun in this one. Well, I guess the gunplay is almost identical after they updated the first game, but the maps seem much better designed for you to utilize your party's various powers, whereas in the first game everything is so flat and boring. You do lose out on a lot of the RPG aspects of the first game, though, which can be good and bad. You definitely spend far less time micromanaging inventory in the main menu, which is great, but every character has less traits than in the first game for you to upgrade.

That's consistent with the series moving more from straight RPG to third person shooter, but it's also a lot more noticeable when you play the games back to back rather than playing them two years apart like when they actually released.

I'll also say that playing the games back to back really highlights how better the second game is from a production standpoint. It's obviously a lot more gorgeous and well-designed artistically than the first game, which makes sense given the big increase in budget, but it goes beyond that. I'm not sure if it's specifically the writing that takes a big step forward or if it's simply better actors delivering the lines, but either way it's noticeably better in that regard. Your squad members are much more fleshed out as well. I remembered the first game having these big side quests with your squad mates, but it turns out I was just projecting a lot of the second game onto it. The first game has some very simplistic side quests for characters like Garrus, whereas the second game has full fledged major quests for each of your crew, plus smaller fetch quests for the non-squad crew like the doctor and the cook.

It's just a shame they ditched so much of the RPG stuff. That's really my main complaint with the game. It went from a true RPG to essentially a third-person shooter melded with a choose your own adventure book.

I just bought Edge of Eternity on Steam... So far it's a legit game and it's a JRPG style...

Just started playing some Rise Eterna. Game is similar to Fire Emblem but I havent really figured out the damage system...no leveling in this game. The visuals are pretty good but the story seems quite lacking through the first 30 mins or so and game play is eh. It feels like a worse FE.

I was watching SGDQ earlier today and they were speed-running my single favorite JRPG. I kind of want to go dig up my old GBA and run through Golden Sun again (for the 50th time). Such an amazing game.

That reminds me that I picked up an original fire emblem game with the box and everything the other day! I need to find my DS to see how it works!

Supposed to be a lost of the hardest RPGs ever but he missed one... It's a tactical game and if any players HP hits zero, you automatically lose that battle. My brother gave up on the game and there is very few games he cannot beat...

Why is Fates on here? FE14 was not only a terrible game but also pretty easy. 2, 6, 7, and 9 were all harder.

Rekka no Ken? That was my 2nd game in the series (after sacred stones). Its pretty fun after the tutorial. I should pick up my last run of HNM which I dropped like a year or two ago.
