The decision to put a 19 year old in to take (potentially) the final penalty was one of enormous stupidity. I'm an Arsenal supporter so I feel terrible for Saka but I also despise England fans because they've sang 'it's coming home' for like 69 years and they still haven't gained the smallest bit of shame after losing over and over and over again.

Anyone watching the Euros or Copa America at the moment? Italy are looking good value for their money, FYI.
Even if you think I don’t know squat about Cleveland sports (which would be a poor take, IMO), I will not take any slander against my football/soccer knowledge

Actually it’s been 55 years.

As far as the PK decisions are concerned you put your best shooters in order from best to worst. Some players are poor PK takers and some are not up to the pressure. That’s why Harry Kane went first. Garett Southgate said at the postgame presser that the players who took the kicks were the best in practice. Southgate has personal experience of that situation, having missed a PK to lose a match himself.

I was so happy when Rashford hit the post after that run-up. Dude's hubris was turned up to 11.

I know it was a good pen by Maguire, but you're telling me Maguire is a better shooter than Sterling? Southgate should also know practice and the real thing/second largest stage in international football is not the place to put a young player who has NEVER taken a senior penalty in his career. Even out of context of the way the pens went, Saka shouldn't be there for the closeout, regardless of situation.

Sterling might have declined to take penalties.

It‘s not “who is a better shooter“, it’s who is more likely to make a PK. Obviously Sterling is the better goal scorer, so there is a reason he wasn’t selected.

What I'm saying is whatever the reason was, it was wrong and pretty much everything Southgate did today was wrong. Mount for 75 minutes, poor decision. Grealish not playing much of the game or tournament, poor decision... Not sure how anyone can rationalize Saka as the #5 kick taker and pretty much every pundit, player, ect is saying that. It was just a mistake on Southgate's part and there's no real defending it. Southgate is going to say whatever he can to lessen the blow.

Ridiculous. He took England to PKs and lost to Italy - not exactly the little sisters of the poor. I saw Southgate himself miss in Euro 1996 and saw missed PKs before that. As for Saka - players much younger than him have played for their nations including Wayne Rooney. Typical Arsenal supporter to make excuses for your boy failing when Tottenham Hotspur players made PKs in the last WC to advance. Back to Woolwich!

Lmao, you're a Tottenham fan. Literally everything about you makes sense now.

Rooney had taken a senior pen in his career before... But yeah, you being a Spurs fan pretty much confirms I should never or respond to your posts again :chuckle:

Typical Tottenham and Arsenal fans fighting for who failed the most.

Not really talking about who failed. Just reading way too much racial abuse coming from a lot of fans (many of who appear to be Chelsea and Tottenham fans) against Saka, Rashford and Sancho. And it's pretty fucked up. Not making excuses for Saka missing the pen, but I think it was a poor decision for him to be in that position in the first place.

Do we discuss the fact that Kane had 0 touches in the box until the pen?

I saw the racial abuse mentioned on BBC.com. Horrible. Danny Rose has faced a lot of that, especially in European matches.

I feel horrible for guys like Sterling and Rashford too. People are racially abusing them for doing things like giving their parents cars and doing stuff for the community. Honestly, the amount of racism in sports is disgusting.

On second thought, you’re correct - Southgate should not have counted on an Arsenal player to get it done.

Kane can’t get touches in the box without service. He was also dropped back to some extent, and made the long pass to former Spur Trippier to get up the Shaw goal.
