2021 Minor League Thread

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Yeah wasn't Frank Hermann the Harvard reliever?

Anyway, I'm intrigued by Lavistida. While I do not subscribe to the Rule 5 concerns that some seem to, I can certainly see the value of swapping minor leaguers for minor leagues to help minimize the number of players exposed to Rule 5 this year. Anyone think we see a Conor Capel/Oscar Mercado type trades this month? Would seem to be helpful. MIF in particular at AA or below could be swapped with some arms or corner OF/IF.

The problem with trying to put Lavastida through the Rule 5 draft is the fact that one) He has a high floor type of bat. Looking at his numbers, his worst case scenario is Clement with more power... That's his bat right now, not what it could potentially be, so I think if he can be an average to plus defender as a catcher (his Range factor and whatnot say he can be) there won't be any issue as a backup catcher. 2) He's a converted catcher, from 3B/SS plus he has good speed for a catcher, so he can play other positions outside of catcher. I don't think a team would be scared to take him and make him an utility guy like the Blue Jays did with Gomes. To say his potential is Tony Wolters/Frank Hermann type with a slightly better bat and defense, isn't actually to much of a stretch.

Maybe he can also play LF like Haase? Also, maybe NL gets the DH role for 2022 as new labor contract is negotiated. Plenty of teams will be looking for new potential bats. He is definitely on my list of 50/50 shot to be rostered (if we create some room).

At the moment we only have two catchers on the 40 man roster. Naylor doesn't need to be added in 22, and Lavastida is our second rated catching prospect, so I feel it will be hard to leave him off of the 40 man roster. I think he will be taken if left free like Wolters was. He played 10 games at 3B in 17 and 6 games at SS in college while one at catcher. He has stolen 10 bases for us this season. I know that's at A ball, but it's rare to see a catcher at any level stealing bases. That tells me athletically, he could learn to play other positions. I was thinking 1B/3B And/or LF/RF type of thing for him wouldn't be unreasonable.

That may be a good idea as Bimbo pointed out today ... Ramirez could/should move up from rookie ball to low A. You also have Diaz in Low A who is hitting .320 and thus could move up to High A to replace Lavastida. The only issue is the backlog of retread catchers in AA/AAA. You have Rivera in AA, Ramos/Lavarnway along with younger Collins/Gonzalez at AAA. That's an easy fix with 2 health catchers now.

The only bad part of having Naylor and Lavastida in AA at same time is getting them enough catcher time to develop their primary position. Yet, with AFL (hopefully) and Sandy (running simulated games in Oct or Feb to coach them up), that can be fixed. It would also allow, as you pointed out Lavastida, to be a utility catcher to get his bat in the line-up more regularly (as Will Smith could have been if he didn't break out over Ruiz for Dodgers).

That also points out another reason to do this ... IF, Lavasitda break out at AA as well, you could try to swing a trade with Dodgers for Ruiz ... give them either Naylor/Lavastida (plus some more) for Ruiz. Ruiz is in his 3rd option year (added Nov 2018) so needs to replace Barnes as back-up catcher or be traded. Dodgers can get Naylor say plus a pitcher or two ... and Naylor can to go to their AAA team as emergency catcher (for next year) as Cartaya (their next catcher up is only in low-A). We then get Ruiz who can replace Hedges next year and learn from Perez to be long-term starter and then have Lavastida in AA/AAA -- ready to be back-up catcher at worst for next few years till Perez retires and he is ready.

Edit - A Naylor for Ruiz trade would take an add-on of 8 like Quantrill, Sandlin, Martinez or Rodriquez. Probably wouldnt work as Naylor Bros like being on same team and Dodgers have few needs (other than relievers for playoffs).

Over his last month Bo Naylor is slashing .257/.297/.457

Last 15 he is slashing .274/.328/.500

Last 10 he is slashing .306/.375/.639

Hardest leap in the minors is A to AA and he completely skipped over High-A ball and went straight to AA as a 21 year old following a missed season. Improvement trend is all that is needed to be seen from him to get him in AAA by the end of the year.

And his defense has been tremendous behind the dish this year.

I know its silly, but I hope we keep Josh for when Bo gets called up. I would love to have 2 brothers in our starting line up, i am a sucker for stupid stories like that, lol.

Pretty sure it’s been mentioned before that the prospect of playing with his brother was a huge motivator for Josh (Jose as well with his respective brother).

Josh really wants to be a fixture here alongside Bo.
