2021 College Football Season/Playoff Thread

Do Not Sell My Personal Information

Sounds like they're going to the SEC. What a coup for that conference.

Not sure where the B1G goes from here. Hopefully the ACC dies and we scoop up Clemson, VT, UNC, FSU and finally...ND.

This will be a major shift and there are a lot of unanswered questions.

Assuming the SEC accepts them, which went from rumor to done deal pretty quick, this means the top conference becomes a super-conference and will undoubtedly gobble up extra playoff spots while most leagues struggles to put forth a single contender. I see the Big 12 collapsing for sure (who's gonna want to stick around while they become G6?), but the ACC likely expands along with the B1G & PAC. The problem is we're mostly splitting scraps while the prizes go to the big kids table.

ACC: Notre Dame (if they feel like it, they are the last Blue Blood available), West Virginia, maybe they take in a Cincinnati or UCF? Would they take a Texas team?
PAC-12: Oklahoma State, Texas Tech, Kansas State and less likely Baylor or TCU seem like possible fits; still worse for all of them than the current state of things
B1G: Kansas for basketball, maybe try to pry Notre Dame away from ACC... then who? Even if we swung WVU over that doesn't move the needle against the SEC... Iowa State brings nothing new but would fit in geographically

The good thing for Ohio State is that the Big Ten's failures haven't stopped us from being a great national-level team. But if the B1G becomes solidified as a second-tier conference, how long can we sit with a lesser crown and still remain a perennial contender? And does this lead to some pro-style mega-league that no longer resembles the regional sport that once was?

For now I'll delude myself with fantasies of a few SEC teams aligning to stop the expansion so that OU & UT come north.

All the B1G needs is 1 of Texas or ND, and we’re good.

What a stupid expansion. What is the goal here? Money I’m guessing?

Don’t really give a shit, the rest of the Big Ten can rot. Long as OSU thrives.

The goal is essentially that Texas and OU don’t rot in a shit conference, make huge money and make the SEC better.

Guess I’m not sure there are any negatives to it, from either party’s end.

So money, like I said.

From a fan’s perspective it is dumb. Both teams could make the playoff in the Big 12, as Oklahoma has shown. Consolidating the good teams into one conference is stupid. Is Oregon and USC going to hit up the SEC soon? Ohio State?

Makes you wonder what the sport looks like in ten years.

B1G will have to take ND and raid some ACC school. Virginia, UNC, maybe BC.

Its dumb that I'll be treated to better college football matchups?

In a 12 team playoff, great teams are going to make it. There is less incentive to subject yourself to a shit conference, when you could play against better competition and make more money.

Still not understanding with the problem is, aside from what I'm assuming is a bit of jealousy that the SEC has just gotten markedly better and added two pretty great schools to their ranks.

But hey, really looking forward to OSU traveling to Piscataway in October, exciting stuff.

So B1G will snag a couple basketball schools. Seems hardly comparable. Not that I’m sure this matters to OSU fans, whose team has been on a different level than the conference for a while. Just basically means there is one great superconference and this new playoff will be half SEC.

Why would an OSU fan care if the SEC, already the best conference by a decent margin, got “better?”

You said it yourself, OSU will be in the playoff regardless. That’s great good for them, they’ll all beat the shit out of each other and sure it’ll be fun to watch for fans of football.

Personally if the sport wants to make it about one or two super conferences go ahead, but the problem is with the glacial pace everything moves at, that will take 20 years to come to pass. So instead I’ll have to slowly watch power 5s become irrelevant like the Big 12 just did.

But again, I’m sure the new playoff being an SEC jerk off fest will be riveting for you and many others. So all good. The competition portion is a nonfactor for me as long as OSU still gets in every year.

Because as a football fan, I like watching good football.

If there is more good football, I like that.

Check.

Who cares?

What does having conference supremacy matter in a 12-team playoff format?

I'm trying to understand why you care so much about the strength of a total conference if its the teams which matter.

Trying hard to read this as something other than jealousy of conference supremacy that largely doesn't matter, but okay...

Expanding the B1G footprint to the sunbelt isn’t a small thing. Virginia/DC produces some good football players.

Plus now BTN can make a doc about that big ten icon Michael Jordan.

I mean, OSU has always had a “rivalry” with the SEC. I’m sure you know this, but OSU fans generally don’t like the SEC. so no, I don’t like that now half the relevant teams will be SEC. Why would I be sad the B1G didn’t add two great programs (well, Texas, eh…) to make the conference much harder for OSU, though? Your attachment to this jealousy thing is kind of strange.

Again, if the sport wants to make all but 1-2 conf irrelevant, cool. It’ll be like AFC/NFC or something. But the fact I have to watch the tradition slowly change over 20 years is going go be annoying. I understand why they can’t just rip the band aid off, doesn’t mean I have to like it.

That’s my guess is eventually it’s two conferences.

Precisely. Take the preseason top 25 the NCAA just released:

If you stick Oklahoma and Texas in the SEC, in these rankings the SEC would have:
  • Three of the top four teams in the country
  • Five of the top 11
  • 8 in the top 20
In a 12 team playoff, you're likely guaranteed at least three teams in the playoffs and potentially could wind up with 5. There would likely be years where a four loss SEC team got in over a two loss team from another conference based solely on the strength of the conference.

Ultimately, I think the more likely scenario is a dramatic re-organization within the NCAA as a whole. With the way media rights and now NIL has evolved, the way the NCAA has done business up to this point is irrelevant and unless they are proactive in conference re-alignment and changing the general rules for college athletics, they could watch the whole system crumble.
